All subscriptions begin with the first issue of the year. Non-delivery of any issue should be reported to THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY within one month of date of usual delivery if a second copy is to be supplied free of charge. Subscribers may submit one query each year for free pub­ lication; additional queries will be accepted on a "space available" basis. Con­ tributions of all types of genealogical information will be accepted. We publish previously unpublished Tennessee-connected data, preferably that with pre-Civil War dates. All material for publication is subject to editing to conserve space. Every effort will be made to publish accurate material; however, neither TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, "Ansearchln'" News, nor the Editor can assume responsibility for errors on the part of contributors. Corrections of proven errors will be published. Publishable and unpublishable contributions are put on file in our library for the use of our members. Books donated to our library will be reviewed in the earliest possible issue of the quarterly. Winter, 1978 151 OVER THE EDITOR'S DESK This 25th year of "Ansearchin'" News has been a big one for our staff--so big that we've run out of calendar before we're ready! Time just doesn't last half as long now as when we were children eagerly awaiting Christmas. We hope that your 1978 was a full, happy, successful one and that 1979 will be better! We thank you who have been so prompt to renew your subscription for 1979, and hope the rest of you will do so right away. There is a great saving in time and money when we get all your subscriptions in time for the first mailing. Postage has be­ come such a major expense that we will be able to keep the subscription rate down only by savings afforded by things like bulk mailing; straggling subscriptions add substantially to our costs! We like the notes you are adding to your renewals indicating preferences for art­ icles. As yet no trend is developing--you're requesting counties from allover Tennessee. We are especially grateful, too, to you who have sent material to be published. It's excellent! and when we have space, wetll publish it. We prefer pre-Civil War material, and it will probably be printed first. Our traveling members and the mail bring us word of much genealogical activity: Lowndes County (Miss.) Dept. of Archives and History, which was organized in 1977, is busy preserving the official records of that county prior to 1900. The preser­ vation includes cleaning, flattening, deacidification, minor repairs of the old records and storage in acid-free folders and document cases. They have a genealog­ ical reference library and they conduct genealogical classes. They plan a quar­ terly publication devoted to county records and their preservation. They also will do research. Write them for fees at 220 5th. Street, North, P. O. Box 284, Columbus, MS 39701. Mrs. Betty Wood Thomas is the director. Grayson County Texas Genealogical Society, 421 N. Travis, Sherman, TX 75090 an­ nounces the preparation of a book of biographical sketches of residents and former residents of their county. They welcome stories of 600 words or less with up to three pictures at no charge, but their deadline is 31 January 1979. Pre-publica­ tion price is $29.00 postpaid. Write them for more information. Two excellent quarterlies published by the West-central KY Family Research Association, P. O. Box 1465, Owensboro, KY 42301. Vol. 11, No.3, Fall 1978 of the Bulletin is the 10th anniversary issue and offers reprints from the first Bulletin, news of 1900 KY Federal census, advice for beginning genealogists, queries, book reviews, 15 pp. KENTUCKY FAMILY RECORDS, Vol. 7, is focused on Daviess County. A capsule history and description of Owensboro (county seat) and its formation is offered along with marriage bonds (1825-1828), cemetery records, abstracts of wills and inventories.     Russia’s Empress-Navigator: Transforming Modes of Monarchy During the Reign of Anna Ivanovna, 1730-1740 Jacob Bell University of Illinois 2019 Winner of the James Madison Award for Excellence in Historical Scholarship The eighteenth century was a markedly volatile period in the history of Russia, seeing its development and international emergence as a European-styled empire. In narratives of this time of change, historians tend to view the century in two parts: the reign of Peter I (r. 1682-1725), who purportedly spurred Russia into modernization, and Catherine II (r. 1762-96), the German princess-turned-empress who presided over the culmination of Russia’s transformation. Yet, dismissal of nearly forty years of Russia’s history does a severe disservice to the sovereigns and governments that formed the process of change. Recently, Catherine Evtuhov turned her attention to investigating Russia under the rule of Elizabeth Petrovna (r. 1741-62), bolstering the conversation with a greater perspective of one of these “forgotten reigns,” but Elizabeth owed much to her post-Petrine predecessors. Specifically, Empress Anna Ivanovna (r. 1730-40) remains one of the most overlooked and underappreciated sovereigns of the interim between the “Greats.”1 Anna Ivanovna was born on February 7, 1693, the daughter of Praskovia Saltykova and Ivan V Alekseyvich (r. 1682-96), the son of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich (r. 1645-1676). When Anna was 1 Anna’s patronymic is also transliterated as Anna Ioannovna. I elected to use “Ivanovna” to closer resemble modern Russian.
