The Harbourmaster's House is a B-listed 19th century building, which sits next to the historic Dysart harbour and is the HQ of the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. Aberdour Castle (and more…) High Street, Aberdour KY3 0UN (about 9 miles from Kirkcaldy, handy for the train)

12th century castle with dovecote and extensive gardens. Café and gift shop (Historic Scotland).

Aberdour also boasts the 12th century St Fillan’s Church (next to the castle), award-winning beaches and RHS medal-winning floral displays, a sensory garden and a number of pubs and hotels. It is home to the UK’s current official ‘Small Railway Station of the Year’, just three stops from Kirkcaldy (new visitor centre open Saturdays 2-4pm).

Lochore Meadows Country Park Just 11 miles from the theatre, Fife’s most popular free outdoor attraction offers 1,200 acres to explore, centred around a beautiful loch. Good for walking, bird-watching, cycling, fishing or enjoying a picnic or barbecue. There’s even a beach! Lochore Meadows boasts wildflower meadows, park land and ancient woodlands. Much of the park is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies.

Falkland Palace and Gardens (National Trust for Scotland) 12 miles from the theatre, this imposing renaissance palace dominates the ancient market town of Falkland. Separate tickets are available for the gardens and the palace itself.

Country residence of the royal Stuarts and adored by Mary, Queen of Scots, the palace contains centuries-old carvings, paintings and furniture and examples of spectacular Renaissance architecture. The beautiful garden and orchard is a delight in itself.

East Neuk Villages

For a scenic drive out, try Fife’s ‘East Neuk’ villages of Elie (18 miles), St. Monance (20), Pittenweem (22), Anstruther and Crail (26). Each has a unique charm, and if you’re new to this part of Scotland, they are well worth a visit.

Dunfermline Abbey, Library and Pittencrieff Park Fifteen miles away in Scotland’s ‘ancient capital’ finds the final resting place of Robert the Bruce and the post- burial dite of the Kings and Queens of Scotland, This beautiful abbey remains a place of worship with Sunday services and daily prayers

The adjacent Pittencrieff Park offers many fine woodland walks, particularly beautiful in springtime.

And nearby Dunfermline Central Library and Museum has recently had a multi-million pound overhaul. Enjoy their ‘brush with colour’ collection and then relax in the lovely cafe!

The Forth Bridges No trip to Fife is complete without seeing the three magnificent bridges across the Forth, each one representing state-of-the-art design and engineering at the time of their construction.
