2 Letter from the Principal

Mark Aronson Lisa Mazzola Interim Principal Administrative Executive Assistant [email protected] [email protected]

Dear Newton North Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to another exciting year at . As you enjoy the last few weeks of summer, I ask that you take a moment to look at the NNHS calendar, the # rst day of school schedule, the letter from your housemaster, and all the other important information included within these pages.

As I hope you know, Newton North is a special place because of our talented and dedicated students, par- ents and faculty. Please help us continue our strong tradition of excellence by getting involved in our school through avenues such as our Fine and Performing Arts program, our Athletics program, our clubs, our student government, our PTSO, and all of our amazing activities. Each year, we challenge our students to leave New- ton North a little bit better than they found it, and getting involved is a great way to make your mark on our school.

I want to remind all families that our PTSO works hard every year to provide a detailed student directory. I ask that you take a moment to review your information, so you can be assured that you will be included in this directory.

Please also remember that we no longer mail anything home, as we rely heavily on electronic communication through Parent Connect. ! e log-in instructions for Parent Connect is included in this booklet. Please take a moment to log on and check your contact information. If you do not have computer access or have any prob- lems, please contact your house o" ce.

Mark your calendars now for Back-to-School Night on September 24th and check out the North calendar in the booklet for our grade-level nights and parent-teacher conferences.

Our all school summer reading this year is Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers From Everyone Else, by Geo$ Colvin. ! e book examines the extent to which people’s natural ability, e$ ort, and precise practice impact their success. It will continue our conversations about, and the practice of, Carol Dweck’s “Growth Mindset.” During the # rst semester, ! e Fine and Performing Arts Department will facilitate sta$ and students in activities that further explore the ideas presented in the book.

I look forward to welcoming everyone back on September 8th. Sincerely,

Mark Aronson

Interim Principal

Naturally, I look forward to getting to know you and I am ready and eager to support your academic and social growth as a sophomore.

Sophomore year brings the potential for increased freedom. At the start of the second semester, sophomores who are in good academic and behavioral standing will be eligible to earn open campus privileges. ! ese privileges give students more choices about how to use their study hall blocks. Grades of C- or higher in all courses No attendance grades of N in any course (including study hall and Homeroom) No grades of I (Incomplete) Enrollment in a minimum of 24 periods of structured learning time Approval for open campus by the Housemaster

Students who are ineligible for open campus must attend their assigned study hall(s). Students who are not eligible a% er second term but improve during the third term may earn the open campus privilege the 4th term.

Please note that parents/guardians may choose to deny their child/children open campus privileges with a request made to the Housemaster.

For many of you, this year will be pivotal. For some of you, you will build upon the foundation of excellence that you set last year. For others, you are more than ready to answer the call to take yourself, your future, and your education more seriously. If you have not yet found your niche, this is the perfect time to connect with others in our class. Check out everything that North has to o$ er, take a risk and sign up for something new.

Please review the information in this booklet including the attendance procedures.

We believe that communication between families and the school is essential. Please feel free to contact Ms. Roberts or me with questions or concerns. If you are not yet on our Riley house family email list, please contact Ms. Roberts at: [email protected]

12 Home - School Communication Philosophy Communication between home and school fosters an environment that supports the development of life-long, indepen- dent learners. We believe that, as young adults, our students assume primary responsibility to account for their actions, to communicate regularly with their teachers, and to seek out school personnel directly for assistance and problem resolution. As students assume more responsibility for themselves, we believe that they can and should be included in com- munications and meetings, increasing their commitment to their own progress as independent learners and securing their investment in the outcomes of such collaborations. Together we share the challenge of fostering this growth in independence as students move through their time at Newton North. We recognize this can sometimes be a di" cult process - a time when young adults may struggle to # nd this independence, and, to that end, there are many adults in the building to help them. Support ! e following adults are available to assist your child at school: Teachers, guidance counselors, housemasters, coaches, and a% er-school activity advisors special education liaisons (if applicable). Sharing of information between home and school develops this supportive relationship further by celebrating successes, discussing areas of need, and communicating information about other situations (in and out of school) which may impact a student’s learning. Guidelines 1. Students bene# t when faculty, sta$ and parents communicate respectfully and e$ ectively. 2. Teachers convey their preferred communication form at the start of courses (email or phone). 3. Parents and school sta$ acknowledge the volume of information that circulates each day and are respectful of time demands. 4. Parents and school sta$ act respectfully at meetings and forums and are considerate of speakers in asking questions and making comments. 5. Speci# c concerns should be addressed to the classroom teacher # rst. 6. To respect everyone’s time and commitments, communication responses within two business days are recommend- ed. 7. Beyond the regular school communications, families of students who need additional support may contact a class- room teacher. 8. Concerns that cannot be resolved within two or three communication exchanges with the classroom teacher may warrant additional consultation, possibly involving department chairs or housemasters in more complex situations. 9. When these exchanges do not lead to quick resolution of concerns, families and school personnel may desire phone or in-person meetings for further discussion. Regular School Communication ! e following scheduled meetings and communications occur regularly: Back-to-school mailing (Aug) Back-to-School Night (Sept.) Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Available: ! e results of the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) administered to Newton middle and high school students every two years since 1998 are now available. ! e survey is largely based on a similar survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Questions on the anonymous and con# dential survey focused on issues such as substance abuse, violence and safety, as well as physical and mental health. Highlights of this year’s survey include a continued decline in tobacco use among Newton Youth, a decrease in bullying, but a slight increase in alcohol use in reports of students who are worried about school, social and apperance issues. For more information about the survey, how it is administered, how the data can be interpreted, and a summary of the results, visit the Health and Human Services Department website at www.newtonma.gov.

NNHS MATH DEPARTMENT

! ere are many innovations in the use of technology in mathematics education. At Newton North one of the tools we use in all courses is a calculator. Students are expected to bring a calculator to class as part of their materials. Some important notes regarding calculators:

• Most teachers do not allow students to use their cell phones as calculators in class.

• For parents/guardians of incoming freshmen, it may behoove you to look ahead in your child’s math sequence below to see what calculator will be required in grades 10-12 (in order to avoid purchasing multiple calculators during the four years).

• ! e NNHS math department does not allow the TI-Inspire, and Casio graphing calculators are not recommended.

• Our graphing calculators of choice, and the ones that teachers use for demonstration, are: TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition.

o ! e TI-83 Plus is acceptable as well, though it is not as highly recommended (Your student may feel at a dis- advantage using the TI-83 since it’s operating system is no longer supported/updated by the company and does not use the same student-friendly notation features of the newer TI-84). o Students who have alternative graphing calculators will be responsible for learning how to use them on their own.

• Our scienti# c calculator of choice is the TI-30XS. It is the best one on the market! (Importantly, this calculator has a DATA button with statistical features that are essential for our units on Data and Statistics in all courses from Fresh- man-Senior year)

• Please note that calculators are also required for all science and engineering classes at NNHS. Students may use either a scienti# c or graphing calculator in his/her science class. Students must bring their calculator to science class every day. ! us, a calculator is a doubly important school supply for your child.

• You may # nd used calculators or calculators on sale on the internet (e.g. Craigslist, ebay). " e earlier you look, the better your chances are of # nding a good deal.

• If it is a problem for a student to purchase a calculator of his/her own, we would encourage the student to contact his/ her math teacher during the # rst week of school so that we can help. You may also call or email me directly to assist in this manner.
