Week of January 2, 2014 Gold Coast Gazette Page 3 Diwali Celebrated at Green Vale School Green Vale students in grades one through five experienced a Diwali cel- ebration at assembly this morning that included Headmaster Stephen Watters lighting the diya (lamp), a short film about the holiday and the musical tal- ents of Rohini Ramnathan. Her style of Carnatic music, a classical tradition from South India, delighted and engaged the entire audience of students and faculty. Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is the Indian festival of lights and sweet- ness. It is basically a symbol of the vic- tory of good over evil, brightness over darkness, and truth over dishonesty. Lin- da Gardiner, Assistant Head of School, thanked parents the Kadiyala and Jauhar families for making the morning fes- tivities possible. She added, "What an amazing treat for all of us. You do such a wonderful job of bringing a variety of performers to Green Vale, each with a unique specialty. Our students are so fortunate to learn about their classmates' culture and traditions."
