Jamestown 1605- English merchants ask King James I for permission to found a colony May 14, 1607: Jamestown founded 1st permanent English settlement Jamestown was sponsored by the Virginia Company of London. King James I granted charter (permission to form a colony) The company also supported English national goals of expansion and riches.

The Virginia Company was a joint- stock company. Investors bought shares in the company hoping the company would make money and that they would share in the profits. • The plan was for the company's settlers to find gold and establish trade in fish and furs. • The company sent 144 settlers in three ships to build a new colony in North America Motivations for Jamestown Settlement
