1 HETPALEIS. P 2 WELCOME! On behalf of the IPAY staff we are happy to welcome you to Philadelphia for the 37th annual Showcase. Philadelphia has long been known as a place for meeting and exchange—not to mention revolution! It seems fitting that we gather here again, in one of the leading cultural cities in the United States and IPAY’s home base, to stir the artistic fires, develop professional cultural exchange networks, and share extraordi- nary performing arts experiences with new and old friends.

IPAY Showcase 2015 is one of the only juried performing arts platforms presenting fully-produced pieces created for youth in North America. In addition to attracting dynamic and diverse artistic companies from North America, we continue to be enriched by the growing reach of our global platform in welcoming new and returning artists, producers, presenters, and cultural liaisons from Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Sweden, Holland, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

Whether this is your first Showcase or you are a seasoned attendee; whether you are an artist, producer, presenter, agent, student, or all of the above; we welcome you and invite you to take advantage of all that this opportunity has to offer you, as well as to contribute what you can to make it a success. We hope that you find what it is that has brought you to Showcase and that your presence here helps to fulfill another community member’s purpose for being here. We look forward to seeing you at the performances, Kindling discussions, Cultural Spotlights, receptions—and more. Welcome and thank you for being with us.

Jeremy “ Boomer” Stacey, Executive Director Susan Crofton, Interim General Manager

3 WELCOME!

Please join us at Showcase 101 for an overview of the next few days’ events, along with some useful tips to help set you up for a great conference.

Wednesday, January 21 8:00 am-9:00 am Doubletree Hotel – Orchestra Room

Throughout the conference, IPAY Ambassadors will be available to answer questions, direct you to the next event, and offer general assistance. You can identify Ambassadors as the one’s wearing American Flag bandanas! 4 FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am so pleased to wel- come you to Showcase 2015! Our 37th annual signature event holds much in store for all of us.

If you are a first-time Showcase attendee, I bid you a spe- cial welcome. My own first Showcase was in 2006, and it’s not an overstatement when I say that IPAY was a game- changer for me.

Non-members, it is my hope that, upon your return home, your Showcase experience will lead you to join all of us—artists, presenters, producers, artist managers, and others—who are proud to support the organization year- round.

Philadelphia is the official home of IPAY, and as such, it is a pleasure to return to our organizational home town. While the Avenue of the Arts serves as our Showcase neighbor- hood, we’re not the only game in town, so be sure to check out some of the city’s great restaurants.

During the conference, if you are at all uncertain as to where to go, or if you have any questions whatso- ever, look for the IPAY Ambassadors. Anyone in this all-volunteer group will be happy to help you.

Showcase is a marathon, not a sprint, so if you plan on attending every Spotlight and every performance— and we hope you do!—take your time and make the most of it. Say hello to people you don’t know. Meet new colleagues and renew old acquaintances. Our community is about relationship building, learning from one another, and of course, serving as the focal point in North America for the best in performing arts for young people.

My sincere thanks to our hard-working Board of Directors, our dedicated Committee members, and our talented staff. Here’s to a thrilling, productive, and inspiring four days!

Best regards,

Peg Schuler-Armstrong President, IPAY Board of Directors

5 IN MEMORIAM The IPAY community mourns the recent passing of Maranne Welch. 1937-2015.

10 SHOWCASE SELECTION PROCESS The Selection process developed by IPAY, while subjective, is founded on a desire to shape a forum for the range of national and international work that is being created in the field of professional performing arts programming for young audiences. The focus is on quality work that is appropriate for a variety of venues and markets. The committee looks to achieve a balance of international arts disciplines reflecting diversity in age range, performing arts genres, trends, and audience appeal—with a common denominator of high artistic standards.

Each June, in an intensive two-day process, the Showcase Selection Committee reviews more than 100 applications from artists—in genres including theater, musical theater, mime, physical comedy, dance, music, puppetry, opera—to choose the artists and companies who will perform at Showcase. Selection Committee members are accomplished, experienced professionals in the field of performing arts for youth: artists and artistic or programming directors, arts education directors, children’s festival directors, and artist managers.

The committee applies the following criteria to select the performances for Showcase: • The work reflects an intrinsic artistic integrity. • The work demonstrates an overall artistic rationale with regard to form, direction, music, choreography, design, technical aspects, and casting. • The work is created and performed by professionals. • The work is fresh, innovative, relevant, and appropriate for youth, young adult, and family audiences.

Step into this whimsical wonderland where table-tops grow grass and water bottles become the depths of the ocean. Making use of nothing but household objects and the performers’ hands, Argus transcends from the simple to the sublime as it explores the attempts of a fragile little creature to find a home in a world where he just doesn’t fit in. Working on principles of found objects and transformation, this quietly touching piece highlights the beauty of an impossible life; one that is full of playfulness, joy and laughter.

The Pigeoning is a darkly comedic yet heartfelt story that spins articulate puppetry, live music, and lo-fi special effects into an epic tale about the illusion of safety and control in the context of the end of the world. This adaptation, geared to audiences 10 and up, draws from William Shakespeare’s romantic masterpiece to evoke no- tions of seduction, desire, unchained passion, and death. ANTS is a work that brings human-sized ants into a public space for a mix of roving performance and large- scale interaction with children and their adults. The ants enter the public space in search of food. Intent upon their task, they barely notice the children who are drawn irresistibly to them. Gradually, the children begin to understand that the ants want them to bring them food as the ants gather crumb after giant crumb. The crumbs, hundreds of them, form beautiful wavering lines, transforming a landscape and constantly changing and making new patterns, allowing the child to be part of the clan and creators of the landscape.

Using simple white balloons, this new show by Patch Theatre Company celebrates how we make friendships and build relationships without our relationship with objects. The show is a visual-theatre feast of image, music, dance, light, and play that will engage, delight, and inspire young audiences.

46 CULTURAL SPOTLIGHTS IPAY Showcase has long benefitted from a diverse range of productions from around the world. Sometimes we see several productions from a specific country or region and we can start to get a sense of the artistic landscape of where the work is coming from. At Showcase 2014, IPAY piloted Cultural Spotlights as an opportunity for our community and Showcase delegates to get up close and personal to a region or country. These spotlights go beyond promoting a single artist and will highlight the broader cultural context of a region or country. This will include looking at all artistic genres in which work is being created for young audiences, including connections to festivals or showcases, opportunities for collaboration or artistic inter- section, funding opportunities, and other considerations that have affected the artistic ecology.

Wednesday, January 21 5:15-6:15 pm Orchestra Room, DoubleTree Hotel The Netherlands & Flanders

From dictionary.com [kin-dl] verb (used with object), kindled, kindling. 1. to start (a fire); cause (a flame, blaze, etc.) to begin burning. 2. to set fire to or ignite (fuel or any combustible matter). 3. to excite; stir up or set going; animate; rouse; inflame: He kindled their hopes of victory. 4. to light up, illuminate, or make bright: Happiness kindled her eyes.

verb (used without object), kindled, kindling. 5. to begin to burn, as combustible matter, a light, fire, or flame. 6. to become aroused or animated. 7. to become lighted up, bright, or glowing, as the sky at dawn or the eyes with ardor.

Kindling is an exploration of the community of performing arts for young audiences. It is a platform for discussion that aspires to spark, question, celebrate and exchange ideas, opportunities and dreams that promote the growth, development and possibilities for our sector. Kindling is a starting point and an op- portunity.

Kinding2015 starting point… It all starts with a story. For artists it might start with a desire to explore: “Why tell this story in this way at this time?”

For presenters it might be the necessity or opportunity to share that story with their community or audi- ences: “Why is this story relevant at this time? Why is it important to share this story with your community?”

Kindling2015 Unpacking the contexts influencing artistic creation and curatorial vision; the intersection in which they meet; and the connections of agents, educators, producers and others that help make this happen.

What’s YOUR Story? IPAY believes in COMMUNITY and all of what that could entail. We believe in the importance of the individual as well as the collective roles and responsibilities within the greater eco-system that contribute to the possibility of transformative arts experiences for young audiences. Healthy communities rely upon under- standing of dynamic and diverse contexts or influences, symbiotic relationships and the sharing of stories.

Daily Kindling Kitchen Table sessions will take place. Recognizing that past Kindling sessions have not had satisfactory time for community discussion, the majority of each session this year will focus on open discussion.

The Kitchen Table is an open invitation for IPAY community members to come together to share stories, ask questions and contribute to an ever evolving dialogue. There are no right or wrong answers and listening is as important as speaking.

Each table will have invited guests and a Kindling host but it is YOU that makes the table come alive. Join us to share relevant ideas from your own experiences and to discuss ways in which you have been inspired to think differently about what you do and how you do it. Each table will have a different starting point inspired by our guests and several tables will be up and active during each timed session.

Pull up a chair, get yourself seated and tell us YOUR story.

51 KINDLING SESSIONS

Wednesday, January 21 SPIN 1:45-3:30 pm Created and Performed by Evalyn Parry Levitt Auditorium Directed by Ruth Madoc-Jones Sponsored by PAPAYA

Canadian artist Evalyn Parry takes her audience on an uncommon theatrical and musical journey in SPIN, her tour-de-force performance celebrating the Bicycle as muse, musical instrument and agent of social change. Inspired in part by the incredible true tale of Annie Londonderry, who in 1894 became the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle, Parry spins a web of stories which travel from 19th century women’s emancipation to 21st century consumer culture, peeling back layers of history to ultimately reveal a profoundly contemporary and personal heart to her performance.

Parry’s “co-star” is a vintage bicycle: suspended in a mechanic’s stand on stage and connected to a variety of electronic effects pedals, the bike is played—from fenders to spokes to bells—by percussionist Brad Hart, conjuring an astonishing and unique sonic accompaniment to Parry’s songs and monologues. Projec- tions by award-winning designer Beth Kates add a captivating visual layer to SPIN.

People’s Choice Victor Award The People’s Choice Victor Award was established in honor of Victor Podagrosi, Founding Director of Child’s Play Touring Theatre of Chicago. Victor, who died unexpectedly in 1995 at the age of 41, dedicated his life and his art to helping chil- dren discover and celebrate their personal voices through the creative act of writing. The Victor Award recognizes the most outstanding Showcase performance, as voted on by the con- ference attendees.

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE for the 2015 Victor Award Winner! You will find ballots in your conference bag.

Colleen Toohey Porter Artistic Development Award

The Colleen Toohey Porter Artistic Development Award pays tribute to the life and work of an innovative, influential, and generous member of the IPAY community by nurturing emerg- ing artists in the field of performing arts for young audiences. 54 JIM RYE FELLOWSHIP The late Jim Rye was the Artistic Director of the Birmingham Children’s Theatre. Jim served on the Show- case Committee for many years, his company performed and exhibited, and he served as a mentor for many up and coming professionals in the field. We honor him by supporting the up and comers in today’s ever expanding field of performing arts for young people.

The International Performing Arts for Youth’s Jim Rye Fellowship offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate students to be involved with the inner workings of a major performing arts for young audiences conference. After a competitive application and review process, Jim Rye fellows are provided with a year long membership in IPAY, a Showcase conference registration, and a small travel stipend (if they do not live in the host city). In addition, mentors with experience in the student’s field of interest help the scholar navigate the conference and facilitate the student’s introduction to other professionals in the field, allowing them important networking opportunities.

In return, the fellows provide valuable assistance to the conference organizers, helping the conference run smoothly by providing help as needed, taking on projects such as assisting with registration, serving as liaison with artists, conducting audience surveys, working the IPAY booth and serving as reporters or recorders for educational sessions and discussions.
