Glamorous hotels, world-class dining and stunning vistas merge seamlessly with dynamic student suburbs and vibrant nightlife. Malay and African heritage is evident in the cuisine, traditions, and entertainment while the architecture reveals a strong Dutch, German and English flavor and style. Contemporary art is proudly displayed in a variety of galleries and modern boutique hotels, and wine bars and brandy tasting lounges will appeal to the fashionable set. For the well-heeled the finest in opera, ballet, drama, and music can be appreciated in style. Arriving into Cape Town you will be met at the airport by your local driver and assistant and transferred to your hotel, the iconic and perfectly located Cape Grace. As you drive toward the city your view from afar will be Table Mountain, one of the world’s most famous landmarks. Having arrived at the hotel and taken some time to check in and unpack you then have the remainder of your day at leisure. Please note the cost of your international arrival flight is not included in your itinerary. Meals Included: Breakfast Day 2 Cape Grace, Cape Town, South Africa Today you will enjoy breakfast, meet your guide in the hotel lobby, and depart on a half day tour of this fascinating City. Your tour commences with a visit to the iconic Table Mountain. Here you will enjoy panoramic views over the Mother City (Cape Town’s endearing nickname) and the Atlantic Seaboard with Robben Island in the distance lying sleepily in Table Bay Harbor. With a better understanding of the city layout, you will descend and wander through the inner city, soaking up the magical vibe of Cape Town, through a combination of tales of the past juxtaposed with modern day culture, and meet some of the absorbing communities which form the town’s vital building blocks. Focusing on food, design, arts, and crafts you will uncover a selection of historical sites, such as Company’s Garden, Green Market Square and St George’s Cathedral - buildings and monuments which stood as the backdrop for memorable icons who changed the world. Depending on your interests, touch on the fascinating and controversial politics that have shaped the city - delving into recollections of the once-vibrant District 6 community or perhaps the occasion where Mandela made his first free speech. You will end your tour with a stop at Truth Café a ‘steampunk inspired’ artisan coffee shop serving all hand-roasted coffees in a vintage cast-iron drum. You guide will then be happy to either drop you back at your hotel, leave you to continue exploring this wonderful City independently. Meals Included: Breakfast Day 3 Cape Grace, Cape Town, South Africa This morning you will enjoy breakfast before meeting your guide and together departing for a full day tour of the incredible Cape Peninsula! Your tour begins at Kalk Bay, best known for its working fishing harbor and bohemian feel. Browse the arts and crafts on offer, perhaps do a bit of shopping in the quirky fashion boutiques and enjoy the antiques and collectables along the main strip. Next, you will head over to Simon’s Town where those keen to find out more about the rich history surrounding this naval town, museums, and monuments, will find plenty of insight. Bringing this naval town to life is an insight into the shark diving industry and stories of Just Nuisance - Great Dane, WWII mascot and only dog ever enlisted in the Royal Navy. Before heading into the Cape Peninsula, itself you will search for our own rogue penguins - a splinter colony away from the crowded boardwalks over the main breeding site - on a beach known only to locals. Your tour continues with a gentle hike in the Cape Peninsula Reserve, exploring secluded beaches and this region’s unique wildlife. The return journey weaves back to Cape Town via Noordhoek Farm Village a food artisan hub of the Peninsula OR alternatively, pop into a gorgeous wine estate in Constantia, a well-known wine-producing area and one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere. Time permitting, you will stop for a sundowner at a local brewery, vineyard, beach or scenic look-out, whatever takes your fancy. Please note: During your morning brief your guide may advise changing the route of your tour to allow for you to beat any pending crowds into certain areas during peak seasons, so that you can spend maximum time exploring outside the vehicle. Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch Day 4 Cape Grace, Cape Town, South Africa Today you will enjoy your day at your leisure. Meals Included: Breakfast Day 5 Mont Rochelle Hotel, Franschhoek, South Africa This morning you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before checking out and heading to the lobby of your hotel to meet your guide. Together you will set off on an incredibly scenic drive as you make your way into the winelands! Together you will explore one of the most scenically beautiful areas in SA, visiting fascinating towns and stopping by off-the-beaten- track farms which revel in their old-world roots and influences. You will begin with some time in Stellenbosch, browsing through its wealth of appealing stores and museums while sipping local coffee blends in tempting cafes. Your tasting experience will then commence at one of regions iconic wine estates, let the pairing of wine awaken your senses while enjoying breath-taking mountain ranges and lush gardens. Admire a collection of contemporary art, see the highest-growing vines and, from an elevated point, take in the stunning vistas over an old- world estate. After lunch, you will visit some of the smaller, boutique and family-owned wine estates for a more intimate wine tasting. Discover Franschhoek, established by the French Huguenots in 1688, this town retains its historic charm but has fused it with a contemporary vibe. It boasts gourmet restaurants, appealing boutiques, and art galleries. Following your day of exploration, you will be dropped at your hotel for the next two nights, Mont Rochelle Hotel! Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch Day 6 Mont Rochelle Hotel, Franschhoek, South Africa This morning you will enjoy breakfast before spending your day at leisure. There are a number of interesting experiences that can be booked and paid for locally. Although not what you might expect from a wine region, Franschhoek is home to Africa’s most incredible motor museum. From an 1898 Beeston motor tricycle through to a modern Ferrari Enzo supercar this incredible collection of over 80 vehicles is a must see for any motoring enthusiast. From the Motor Museum you even have the opportunity to hop into one of these vintage motor vehicles and enjoy a short drive through the picturesque winelands after which you will be dropped at the adjoining winery. Another wonderful option you may enjoy is to catch the famous Franschhoek Wine Tram. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley – picturesque vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300-year history. As a guest on this hop-on hop-off tour, you will experience a unique and leisurely way to see the Franschhoek Valley as you journey through rolling vineyards in a vintage style railway tram and open-air tram-bus, stopping in at some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates. A combination of tram and tram-bus transports you around a loop of stops allowing you to hop-off at each stop and experience one of the many activities on offer, be it wine tasting, a cellar tour, lunch or simply a stroll through the vineyards and when you are ready, hop-on to continue the tour. The tour would take you right into the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, with a narration focusing on the history of Franschhoek and wine cultivation in the valley all while providing unparalleled views of the valley and vineyards. Meals Included: Breakfast Day 7 Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, Kruger National Park, South Africa This morning you will bid farewell to the Winelands and meet your driver who will transfer you back to Cape Town International Airport. • Tulbagh Renosterveld Project Report
BP TULBAGH RENOSTERVELD PROJECT Introduction The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is the smallest and richest floral kingdom of the world. In an area of approximately 90 000km² there are over 9 000 plant species found (Goldblatt & Manning 2000). The CFR is recognized as one of the 33 global biodiversity hotspots (Myers, 1990) and has recently received World Heritage Status. In 2002 the Cape Action Plan for the Environment (CAPE) programme identified the lowlands of the CFR as 100% irreplaceable, meaning that to achieve conservation targets all lowland fragments would have to be conserved and no further loss of habitat should be allowed. Renosterveld , an asteraceous shrubland that predominantly occurs in the lowland areas of the CFR, is the most threatened vegetation type in South Africa . Only five percent of this highly fragmented vegetation type still remains (Von Hase et al 2003). Most of these Renosterveld fragments occur on privately owned land making it the least represented vegetation type in the South African Protected Areas network. More importantly, because of the fragmented nature of Renosterveld it has a high proportion of plants that are threatened with extinction. The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) project, which works with civil society groups in the CFR to update information on threatened plants, has identified the Tulbagh valley as a high priority for conservation action. This is due to the relatively large amount of Renosterveld that remains in the valley and the high amount of plant endemism. The CAPE program has also identified areas in need of fine scale plans and the Tulbagh area falls within one of these: The Upper Breede River planning domain.

It is a newly designated wine district (March 2012) and an exploratory research study was undertaken to determine what the Brand ‘DNA’ of the Wellington Wine District is and then to propose appropriate marketing strategies for the developing wine tourism destination. The research process focussed on two types of wine tourism behaviour, namely festival-goers at the Wellington Wine Harvest Festival and the visitors to selected Wellington Wine Route members’ cellar doors. Surveys were executed by means of interviews and self-administration of structured questionnaires. Results were analysed in terms of two categories: first time visitors (FTV) and repeat visitors (RV).
