Carlo Lanini was born on August 20, 1949 in Poppi, a small village in the province of Arezzo. From an early age he showed a marked predisposition to drawing and painting as he himself narrated "people a few years older than me remember when, at just over four years old, kneeling on the sidewalk of the house or on the landings of the condominium stairs , I drew and colored everything "; then one day, the artist still says, "I had the opportunity to see a box with squares of watercolors; there were over forty colors and it seemed such a wonder that I was enchanted for a good half hour ". Since then he has started painting and has never stopped. In 1969, at the age of 20, he participated in the Paolo Uccello painting competition in Pratovecchio (Arezzo) and won the first prize. In 1975 he held his first solo exhibition in the imposing structure of the Conti Guidi di Poppi castle. The important events in his pictorial career, with over fifteen hundred works in oil and as many drawings, take place every ten years. In 1995 with the first Carlo Dalla Zorza competition at the Ponterosso Gallery in Milan. 1027 artists participate and Carlo Lanini is first selected among the best 50 artists participating in the exhibition and then awarded in the top five with a fourth place. In 2005 he began an important collaboration with Italarte of Rome, whose owner Pino Purificato is the son of the well-known painter Domenico Purificato.

Research, protection and communication of cultural heritage in a case study of central-northern Italy: the Casentino in Tuscany Archaeological reconstruction of the territory of the Signoria dei Guidi in the Solano valley. The bridge, the mill and the castle of Sant'Angelo in Cetica On the occasion of the first Summer School realized within the UNINET project, the team of the University of Florence proposes a methodological reflection about an interesting case study constituted by the Tuscan valley of Casentino. This territory located in the north-eastern part of the region, rich in human settlements, castles, churches and monasteries, where rural communities have always interacted with a mountainous and hilly environment covered with forests, as well as conducive to the forestry and pastoral economy, is an excellent example of historical and archaeological investigation, enhancement, protection and communication of cultural heritage (Fig.1). Fig. 1. The Casentino valley, in Tuscany between Florence and Arezzo, between Valdarno, Pratomagno and the Apennine ridge, was the fulcrum of the Guidi family's lordship. The contributions of Guido Vannini, Chiara Molducci and the writer explore various aspects of this exceptional and exemplary territory of Casentino taking as a point of reference the two main protagonists of local society, who were also the architects of the most significant structures built, namely the 'feudal' lords, with particular reference to the Counts Guidi, and one of the two monastic orders settled in the area (the Benedictine Vallombrosani). Toscana Km 24,5 +220 -36 E Arezzo The city of Arezzo lies at the centre of three valleys: Due north is the Casentino, the upper Arno Valley; to the north west there is the Valdarno Superiore, the second Arno Valley east of Florence. Due south is the Val di Chiana a very fertile plain the result of a massive reclamation project of the 18th century where once were swamps and morasses. The waters are now conveyed into a canal: “Canale Maestro della Chiana”. The Province of Arezzo also extends eastward into the upper Tiber Valley: Valtiberina. Arezzo was a major Etruscan city grown in prehistory, as shown by numerous archeological finds and also by a skull of an early Homo sapiens (Uomo dell’Olmo) dating back to the Paleolithic period near a hamlet called Olmo during the excavation of a railway tunnel for the Rome to Florence line in 1863. Arezzo was one of the most prominent cities of the Etruscans. It was in fact one of the 12 city states of the Etruscans. Under Roman rule, especially during the Republican period, Arezzo became instrumental for Roman expansion to the north, and was a defensive bulwark for the newly born Empire, thanks to its strategic position on the route to Rome from the north. At the beginning of the Imperial age it was an industrial and creative city and grew rich and powerful at the time of the Punic Wars, when it provided swords for the Roman army when Scipio fought against Chartage.

ABSTRACT ISTAT, the National Institute of Statistics in Italy, promoted in 1998 a pilot project for the realisation of a land use / land cover database at 1:25,000 scale over a test area in the Province of Arezzo, 2000 km2 wide. The aim of the project was to assess the feasibility of a methodology for the development of a land use/land cover database which could become a component of the ISTAT geographical information system. The legend, derived from Corine Land Cover, was composed by 5 levels. The methodology of interpretation is based on the integrated use of multitemporal TM imagery, ortho-photos and auxiliary data. The sample design of the Forest Area Frame is based on a stratification derived from the 3rd level of the Corine legend and Digital Terrain Model. Ground truth from 140 sites, positioned by GPS, was collected.
