  • What's It Like to Be Black and Irish?
“What’s it like to be black and Irish?” “Like a pint of Guinness.” The above quote is taken from an interview with Phil Lynott, the charismatic lead singer of the Celtic rock band Thin Lizzy, on Gay Byrne’s ‘The Late Late Show’. Lynott’s often playful and bold responses to such questions about his identity served to mask his overwhelming feelings of insecurity and ambivalent sense of belonging. As an illegitimate black child brought up in the 1950s in a strict Catholic family in Crumlin, a working-class district of Dublin, Lynott was seen to have a “paradoxical personality” (Bridgeman, qtd. in Thomson 4): his upbringing imbued him “with an acute sense of national and gender identity” (Smyth 39), yet his skin color and illegitimacy made him the target of racial and social abuse in a predominantly white and conservative Ireland. For Lynott, becoming a rockstar offered an opportunity to reinvent himself and be whoever he wanted to be. While he played up to the rock and roll lifestyle in which he was embedded, Lynott is often considered to have been a man trapped inside a caricature (Thomson 301). Geldof (qtd. in Putterford 182) believes that this rocker persona was Lynott’s ultimate downfall and led to his untimely death at just 36 years of age in 1986. For all his swagger and bravado, behind the mask, Lynott was a troubled, young man searching for a place to belong. While many books have been written about the life of Phil Lynott (e.g. Putterford; Lynott; Thomson), few have drawn attention to the notion of identity and the way in which music provided Lynott with an outlet to explore his self.

I spent summers with my grandparents who had a farm. Them old folks would get to moanin’ while they worked, and I just started moanin’ with them. That’s where I learned to sing”. Alabama Slim is typical of the musicians playing as part of The Music Makers Blue Revue, which has been described as akin to Cuba’s Buena Vista Social Club. As a loose amalgam of elderly Southern blues stars who are on the road together. They make their Scottish debut. They headline the influx of American blues talent which also includes: Texan, Hamilton Loomis who will have you jamming and grooving along with his guitar riffs reminiscent of Kravitz and Stevie Ray Vaughan. • Track by Track
Matt Schofield “Far As I Can See” PRD 7416 2 Going into my fifth studio record, and first for Mascot/Provogue, I had some very distinct goals in mind, and a few definite broader concepts I wanted to explore. However, I also wanted to remain open to where the process might take us, maintaining the excitement that improvising and collaborating with talented musicians allows. The inspiration and goals came from many places - things I felt hadn't fully realized on previous studio records, my influences old and new, including musicians I have wanted to work with for years, and a need to keep growing, pushing myself, and represent where I'm heading now. First and foremost I wanted to go as far as possible to capturing, on record, the same connection with the listener that I aim to make at a live show. This would require a careful selection of material, running the full emotional and dynamic range, with an emphasis on true performance, and "capturing that moment". Next, I wanted the tone colour and range of my guitar captured more faithfully in the studio than I have achieved before - to more closely represent what it sounds like when I'm standing in front of my amplifier performing, rather than a "tamed" studio version. I also wanted to push my ability and range as a singer, which requires the right studio environment. I brought in Simon Law, my long time guitar technician and live front of house mixer, to engineer in the studio. Simon knows my tone as well as I do, and his trusted pair of ears on the other side of the glass, went along way to achieving this goal.
