Caught in the Crossfire: Assyrians and the Turkey-PKK Conflict in Iraq Every Assyrian in Barwar knows the difference between the sound of fighter jets and the sound of civilian planes.” Assyrian eyewitness interviewed by the Assyrian Policy Institute ABOUT ASSYRIANS An estimated 3.5 million people globally comprise a distinct, indigenous ethnic group. Tracing their heritage to ancient Assyria, Assyrians speak an ancient language referred to as Assyrian, Syriac, Aramaic, or Neo-Aramaic. The contiguous territory that forms the traditional Assyrian homeland includes parts of southern and south- eastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, northern Iraq, and northeastern Syria. The Assyrian population in Iraq, estimated at approximately 200,000, constitutes the largest remaining concentration of the ethnic group in the Middle East. The majority of these reside in their ancestral homeland located in the Nineveh Plain and within today’s Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Assyrians are predominantly Christian. Some ethnic Assyrians self-identify as Chaldeans or Syriacs, depending on church denomination. Assyrians have founded five Eastern Churches at different points during their long history: the Ancient Church of the East, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Syriac Catholic Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church. The majority of Assyrians who remain in Iraq today belong to the Chaldean and Syriac churches. Assyrians represent one of the most consistently persecuted communities in Iraq and the wider Middle East. Kristian Girling Department of Theology, Heythrop College, University of London PhD Theology 2015 2 Abstract This thesis provides a modern historical study of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq from 2003 to 2013 with analysis of the origins and ecclesiological development of the Chaldean community from the sixteenth century onwards. I offer an insight into the formation of Chaldean ecclesiological identity and organisation in the context of the Chaldeans as a community originating from the ecclesial traditions of the Church of the East and as an eastern Catholic Church in union with the Holy See. I argue for the gradual if consistent development of a Chaldean identity grounded and incarnated in the Mesopotamian-Iraqi environment yet open to engaging with cultures throughout the Middle East and West Asia and especially since 2003 to Europe, north America and Australasia. The thesis also provides an assessment of the contemporary status of the Chaldean dioceses of Iraq highlighting the size, influence and historical development of these structures to October 2013. I attempt to increase awareness of the Chaldeans as an essential part of Iraqi society and as to the crucial social ``difference'' which they established and maintained throughout their history. A ``difference'' which is only as a result of extreme persecution being removed from Iraq. The thesis concludes by opening up examination for the potential for further ecclesiological developments which may occur in light of events since the 2003 Iraq War and the rise of Da'esh in 2014 and considerations of full ecclesial communion with the Chaldeans' sister community the Assyrian Church of the East. -

Most Iraqi Christians are Catholics, with a smaller percentage belonging to the Orthodox denomination and a small number of Protestants. A 1987 Iraq census placed the number of Christians in the country at 1.4 million. In 2003, there were 1.5+ million Christians living throughout Iraq, from as far north as Zakho to as far south as Basra, Iraq. There are currently an estimated 250,000 Christians remaining in Iraq. Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Assyrians speak languages derived from Akkadian and Aramaic languages; Aramaic is the language spoken by Jesus Christ, and the oldest continuously spoken language in the world. Chaldeans, Syriacs, Assyrians, and Armenians were converted to Christianity in the first century AD by Apostles. A. Who are Iraqi Christians: i. Chaldeans (80% of Iraqi Christians): Majority of Iraqi Christians are Chaldeans who are native to Iraq and descendants of the ancient Mesopotamians. Chaldeans speak Chaldean- Aramaic; also known as the Chaldean language, which derives from Akkadian-Babylonian and Aramaic. Chaldeans lived throughout Iraq prior to 2003. Iraq has ever been in the spotlight of ethnic and cultural strife, especially concerning Sunni-Shia animosity, and more recently in dealing with the Kurdish people and Iraqi Kurdistan. In most cases, however, the Assyrians are completely neglected from scholarship concerning Iraq and its peoples. This work reinserts the Assyrian people into the fabric of Iraq and discusses the violent and non- violent suppression of Assyrian identity and culture through genocide, cultural genocide, and ethnic cleansing. Three fundamental factors emerge from this reinsertion with respect to Iraq and genocide. First, this approach introduces an often-neglected element in Iraqi studies: the inclusion of minorities, or micro-minorities, within the existing discourse on Iraqi studies. Second, it contributes to genocide studies by examining the impact of the non-physical, or cultural, aspect of genocide. Further, it discusses the importance of the Assyrian case in Iraq for understanding Iraqi history, and serves as a case in point of scaling suffering and for understanding how and why a hierarchy of genocide exists. -
