CHAN 11 At the Edge of Two Worlds: Rethinking the Portuguese Diaspora in British Hong Kong For centuries, the Portuguese have journeyed across borders. At the height of Por- tugal’s expansion in the fifteenth century, the Portuguese swept through foreign cultures and transformed foreign communities and peoples. Its gradual decline in the late sixteenth century left behind traces of Portugal and its culture as peoples of Portuguese descent experienced intermarriage and came to be assim- ilated by native locals, resulting in the birth of a Eurasian population.

  • Historic Building Appraisal 1 Tsang Tai Uk Sha Tin, N.T
Historic Building Appraisal 1 Tsang Tai Uk Sha Tin, N.T. Tsang Tai Uk (曾大屋, literally the Big Mansion of the Tsang Family) is also Historical called Shan Ha Wai (山廈圍, literally, Walled Village at the Foothill). Its Interest construction was started in 1847 and completed in 1867. Measuring 45 metres by 137 metres, it was built by Tsang Koon-man (曾貫萬, 1808-1894), nicknamed Tsang Sam-li (曾三利), who was a Hakka (客家) originated from Wuhua (五華) of Guangdong (廣東) province which was famous for producing masons. He came to Hong Kong from Wuhua working as a quarryman at the age of 16 in Cha Kwo Ling (茶果嶺) and Shaukiwan (筲箕灣). He set up his quarry business in Shaukiwan having his shop called Sam Lee Quarry (三利石行). Due to the large demand for building stone when Hong Kong was developed as a city since it became a ceded territory of Britain in 1841, he made huge profit. He bought land in Sha Tin from the Tsangs and built the village. The completed village accommodated around 100 residential units for his family and descendents. It was a shelter of some 500 refugees during the Second World War and the name of Tsang Tai Uk has since been adopted. The sizable and huge fortified village is a typical Hakka three-hall-four-row Architectural (三堂四横) walled village. It is in a Qing (清) vernacular design having a Merit symmetrical layout with the main entrance, entrance hall, middle hall and main hall at the central axis. Two other entrances are to either side of the front wall.

  • 41912405 Masters Thesis CHEUNG Siu
University of Queensland School of Languages & Comparative Cultural Studies Master of Arts in Chinese Translation and Interpreting CHIN7180 - Thesis Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong Student: Shirmaine Cheung Supervisor: Professor Nanette Gottlieb June 2010 ©2010 The Author Not to be reproduced in any way except for the purposes of research or study as permitted by the Copyright Act 1968 Abstract The topic of this research paper is “Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong”. It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

  • Hollywood Road Pamphlet
Police Headquarters Block Location 10 Hollywood Road Date of completion 1919 Main building materials Steel reinforcement, concrete, granite, red bricks Architect Leslie Owen Ross of Britain, Royal Engineer Officer of the British Army Hong Kong Garrison Major functions Used as the Hong Kong Island Regional Police Headquarters and the Central District Police Headquarters after World War II. The building was decommissioned in 2004. HONG KONG HERITAGE SERIES Architectural features 1. Facing Hollywood Road, and BUILT IN HONG KONG serving as the distinguishing landmark of the Compound. 2. The north façade of the building is 4-storey high, offering an impression of solemnity and authority. 3. Constructed with the steel- reinforced concrete technology POLICE HEADQUARTERS BLOCK newly introduced at the time. This freed the adornments of the outer- wall from the constraints of the underlying architectural structure, and combined flexibly the building styles of different eras to give an aura of authority. Architectural features The front elevation of Police Headquarters Block reflects the revivalist architectural style that gained popularity in mid-18th century Britain: 1. Doric order: featuring massive columns bearing fillisters — a classic style common among Greek temples. 2. Roman arch: elongates the vertical proportion of the entire façade, giving the building a more solemn aura. 3. Baroque style: a popular style during the 17th century featuring columns that connect through several storeys. The style is grand and magnificent. 4. • Historical Appraisal
Number 63 Building Appraisal Pottinger Street, Hong Kong Pottinger Street (砵甸乍街) was constructed around 1845 and was Historical named after Sir Henry Pottinger the first Governor of Hong Kong who was Interest in office during 1843-1844. It is believed that the street was constructed to facilitate transportation of goods and construction materials for the new prison and magistracy nearby. It was not officially named Pottinger Street until 1858. Because of the steepness of the street, it is covered with rough granite slabs so that pedestrians can walk on the street easily. Thus, many Chinese call the street “Shek Ban Gai” (石板街), literally, “stone slab street.” In the beginning of the 20th century, the area gradually developed into a prosperous commercial zone when traders set up shops and hawker stalls along the street. The section of Pottinger Street now under consideration extends from Architectural Queen’s Road Central at the north end up to Hollywood Road opposite the Merit entrance to the former Central Police Station at the south end. It is laid out on a northeast-southwest axis and is intersected by Stanley Street and Wellington Street. The street is formed of granite slabs laid breaking bond to form steps. There are open drainage channels on each side of the street, also raised sidewalks with steps on either side of the street. The street is pedestrianised, that is to say, it is closed to vehicular traffic. The heavy granite sections used for the steps probably came from Pedder Hill which was the nearest stone quarry. The slabs were laid on a cement or lime mortar bed with a sub-base of granite chippings and gravel.
