Somerset Wildlife Trust is an independent conservation charity working to ensure this remains the case. We rely on the support of our members, donors and volunteers, as well as income from grant-making bodies and companies, including profits from our ecological consultancy, to look after Somerset’s wildlife and wild places. This includes the nature reserves in our care and the creation of thriving ‘living landscapes’ across the Mendips, the Levels and Moors, Taunton, and Somerset’s coast. We also work to influence Somerset’s policy-making and planning decisions, which affect the county’s wildlife and the wider environment to ensure nature is at the heart of decisions on our county’s future.

  • Bristol Biodiversity Action Plan – for People and Wildlife the Bristol Biodiversity Action Plan
Photography main front cover: Bristol onion: Phil Jeary. Peregrine: Helen Hall. Hawthorn tree: chrisjphotography.com. Hedgehog: Darin Smith. BRISTOL BIODIVERSITY ACTION PLAN – FOR PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE THE BRISTOL BIODIVERSITY ACTION PLAN Conserving and enhancing the diversity of Bristol’s habitats and species for the benefit of wildlife and enjoyment of local people. Bristol is one of the greenest cities in the country, with more green space than most other major UK cities. It also supports a huge wealth of biodiversity – everything from rare plants found in the Avon Gorge to foxes, skylarks and water voles. Bristol’s wildlife and wild places help bring the experience of the natural world to many people. Such contact with nature is inspiring and promotes good physical and mental health. Listening to bird song or seeing the seasons change is relaxing and a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. Taking part in a wildlife project can increase people’s confidence and pride in an area. There is no question that biodiversity makes our city a more enjoyable and interesting place to live. Everyone should have the chance to enjoy and benefit from nature, but biodiversity is vulnerable to habitat loss, neglect, development, pollution and other pressures. Nationally even some of our common species, such as the house sparrow, are in decline. The effects of climate change are as yet unknown. We all have a responsibility to protect, conserve and enhance Bristol’s precious biodiversity for the benefit of both wildlife and people. This document sets out actions and activities to help us achieve this.

  • {PDF EPUB} Big Cat Diary Leopard by Jonathan Scott Big Cat Diary: Leopard by Jonathan Scott
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Big Cat Diary Leopard by Jonathan Scott Big Cat Diary: Leopard by Jonathan Scott. The most elusive of the big cats is the leopard. In the Masai Mara, a large female called Half-tail lives with her eight month-old cub. Both are less secretive than most leopards. They move around by day and are easily spotted by the well-trained eye. At the Northern end of the reserve is a cheetah mother with two three-month-old cubs. When last seen, they were living perilously close to the territory of a male lion. Torrential storms have turned the short grass plains into a quagmire, and the Big Cat Diary team can only hope that the rains will stop so that they can continue their vigil after sun-down. By day, the routines of the big cats have become clearer, but what do these animals do in the dead of night? Equipped with night vision goggles and using special infra-red cameras, the Big Cat Diary team unravel some of the answers as they move around the bush in complete darkness. Fundi the cheetah and her two cubs have gone missing and the search is on to find them. When last seen, one of the cubs had developed a limp. This could be a crucial week for the family. Half-tail the leopard and her cub are less elusive. Most days they were spotted around the gorge close to the heart of their territory. The cub is playful, and quite undeterred by the unseasonal, stormy weather.

ISLE OF WEDMORE NEWS May 2018 No. 461 Editorial A hearty welcome to the May edition, Number 461. I started the April editorial by expressing hope that you would be reading that edition in some decent sunshine. As it turned out to be a really dismal and cold Easter Weekend I will refrain from making any such aspirations about the weather in future. Further to the announcement that the Isle of Wedmore News will make cash grants this year to Wedmore in Bloom, the Wedmore Tuesday Club and Hugh Sexey’s School, I am delighted to announce that the Wedmore Arts Festival will also be receiving an amount, taking the total given to almost £2500 as I write. With a revised deadline of 30 April for any remaining applications, I hope this figure will increase and I will report any further donations in the June Editorial. So May is here with two Bank Holidays, new tiered seating at the Village Hall, the Wedmore Arts Festival and a Royal Wedding to look forward to. So as always, I hope everyone can find something to enjoy and appreciate. A warm thank you to those who made a contribution to this edition. • If You Care About Wildlife, You Should Care About Factory Farming
23 May 2017 Compassion in World Farming launches STOPTHEMACHINE campaign with crucial message: if you care about wildlife, you should care about factory farming Yesterday (22nd May), Compassion in World Farming launched its new campaign in a one- night only event at the Natural History Museum. STOPTHEMACHINE explores the link between factory farming and the devastating impact this is having on some of the world’s most iconic wild animals. The campaign calls for an urgent rethink of the way we produce and consume food before it is too late. Factory farming is driving many species, including the Sumatran elephant, African penguin and Brazilian jaguar, to the brink of extinction but we can halt this decline. The everyday food choices we all make could help save these much-loved animals. The launch event was attended by actors Peter Egan and Evanna Lynch, and a number of influential figures including leading British environmentalist Tony Juniper and conservationist Stanley Johnson. Chris Darwin, naturalist and great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin, who attended the launch said: “I know Charles [Darwin] would want to stop the machine because he loved the natural world. “Ultimately, we have got to put factory farming to bed. In the museum. Out of history. Right now.” Award-winning wildlife expert and presenter Simon King OBE, who helped launch the campaign, said: “The final goal of every campaign like this is that it no longer needs to exist. “We’re not powerless in this battle. I’d like to hope that you go away from this evening feeling empowered.” He went on to read the D.H.
