The most elusive of the big cats is the leopard. In the Masai Mara, a large female called Half-tail lives with her eight month-old cub. Both are less secretive than most leopards. They move around by day and are easily spotted by the well-trained eye. At the Northern end of the reserve is a cheetah mother with two three-month-old cubs. When last seen, they were living perilously close to the territory of a male lion. Torrential storms have turned the short grass plains into a quagmire, and the Big Cat Diary team can only hope that the rains will stop so that they can continue their vigil after sun-down. By day, the routines of the big cats have become clearer, but what do these animals do in the dead of night? Equipped with night vision goggles and using special infra-red cameras, the Big Cat Diary team unravel some of the answers as they move around the bush in complete darkness. Fundi the cheetah and her two cubs have gone missing and the search is on to find them. When last seen, one of the cubs had developed a limp.This could be a crucial week for the family. Half-tail the leopard and her cub are less elusive. Most days they were spotted around the gorge close to the heart of their territory. The cub is playful, and quite undeterred by the unseasonal, stormy weather. The lions are also posing problems for the Big Cat Diary team. One pride has dispersed, but two impressive new males have moved in. Nearby, a herd of zebras is cashing in on the fresh grazing, which means a lion hunt could well be on the cards. Simon King, Jonathan Scott and the Big Cat Diary team have now been tracking the cheetahs, lions and leopards of the Masai Mara for four weeks. Every day, the individual animals and their habits are becoming more familiar. The wildebeest migration is now at its height. There is also wonderful footage of the female leopard Half-tail and her surviving nine month-old cub hunting and playing by day and night. Kidogo, the cheetah mother, must keep clear of the neighbouring lion pride as she searches for food for her two young cubs. Meanwhile, some lions are killing the cubs so the females come on heat again. In the last episode, Fundi the cheetah finally reappeared. She and her cubs now seem in good shape, but will they stay in sight? Big Cat Diaries: the original wildlife “Soap Opera”. Big Cat Diary , also known as Big Cat Week and Big Cat Live, was a long-running nature documentary series on BBC television which follows the lives of African big cats in Kenya’s Masai Mara. The series can be viewed on Animal Planet in the US. Filming was timed to coincide with the arrival of the annual wildebeest migration in the Mara, which is when the most predators gather to take advantage of abundant prey. Each series has followed the daily lives of a pride of Lions, a family of Cheetahs and a family of Leopards. The long running presenters ; Simon King and Jonathan Scott, gave the Cats’ names and developed personalities for particular cats to draw the audience into a relationship with them. This created empathy for the characters and led to the series being called “the original wildlife soap opera”. Simon King & Jackson Looseyia. Originally intended to be a one-off series, Big Cat Diary proved so popular that a further eight series have been broadcast to date, plus occasional specials. Recent series have drawn audiences of over 7 million viewers to BBC One, and spawned a number of other programmes using the same ‘Wildlife Diary’ format, including Elephant Diaries , Chimp Week , Big Bear Week and Orangutan Diary . For the first few series, the episodes were broadcast weekly, but since 2004, they have been shown on consecutive nights over the course of a single week. The 2004, 2005 and 2006 series were called Big Cat Week . Since 2005, the Big Cat Diary website has carried additional video footage from the field and in 2006, a spin- off series called Big Cat Uncut was broadcast on BBC Three immediately after the BBC One episodes. On 5 October 2008, the series returned to British television screens as Big Cat Live , the BBC Natural History Unit’s most ambitious live international broadcast. This is when local Maasai guide Jackson Looseyia joined regular presenters Simon King and Jonathan Scott for two weeks of nightly live programmes on BBC One. Big Cat Legacies. The Marsh Pride – Lions of Musiari Marsh. They have been one of the most successful groups to be filmed for the entire big cat series. The longest-standing member of the pride to be featured on the show was Notch (some of you may know him as Khali ) who was thought to be about eight years old when Big Cat Diary started in 1996. The surviving cubs of the 1998 buffalo attack were the oldest lionesses in the pride: White-Eye and the Blonde Sisters, Bibi and Lispy . There are also the “Three Graces”, Joy, Charm and Beauty , three young females who had broken away from the main pride and formed a satellite group. The Three Graces are the daughters of Notch and were born in 2005. The pride has had a succession of male leaders who were filmed during the series, Scar and Scruffy (1998-2000), Simba and Blondie (2000-2004), Notch and Light Male (2004-2007), Clawed and Romeo (2007-2011). The current leaders of the pride are four males known as the “Four Musketeers” named Scarface, Sikio, Morani, and Hunter . Notch was last seen in 2010, when he was still holding rank in the pride and supporting a huge dark mane. In 2003 Bibi was kicked out of the pride and was featured on the first series of Big Cat Week as she struggled to raise her two cubs without the support of the pride, though she was later accepted back into the main Marsh Pride. Cheetah Mothers of the savannah. In 2005’s Big Cat Week, Jonathan Scott (while following the story of Honey and Toto ) introduced viewers to Duma and her mother Sita (some of you may know her as Shakira ). In Big Cat Diary: Family Histories, Duma and Toto’s Story, Scott told the story of Duma in more detail, revealing the moment she left her mother to become independent. In Big Cat Live in 2008, Scott again followed the story of Sita, when she had 5 cubs of nearly 2 months old. They faced a terrible encounter with the some of the Marsh lions and two cubs died. So far, the three remaining cubs, all female, have survived. The cubs have been called Moja, Mbili and Tatu , meaning “one”, “two” and “three” in Swahili.

    MARA PREDATOR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME QUARTERLY REPORT JULY - SEPT 2018 MARA PREDATOR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME Q3 REPORT 2018 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During this quarter we started our second lion & cheetah survey of 2018, making it our 9th consecutive time (2x3 months per year) we conduct such surveys. We have now included Enoonkishu Conservancy to our study area. It is only when repeat surveys are conducted over a longer period of time that we will be able to analyse population trends. The methodology we use to estimate densities, which was originally designed by our scientific associate Dr. Nic Elliot, has been accepted and adopted by the Kenya Wildlife Service and will be used to estimate lion densities at a national level. We have started an African Wild Dog baseline study, which will determine how many active dens we have in the Mara, number of wild dogs using them, their demographics, and hopefully their activity patterns and spatial ecology. A paper detailing the identification of key wildlife areas that fall outside protected areas was recently published.     About us Jonathan Scott was born in London in 1949 and has lived in Kenya since 1977. He has a Bsc Hons degree in Zoology from the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1987 he was the Overall Winner in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition – the most prestigious event of its kind. Jonathan has Presented numerous wildlife television programs for the BBC and Animal Planet. Angela Scott was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1953 and spent her childhood in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Jonathan and Angela married in the Masai Mara Game Reserve in 1992 and have proved to be a prolific partnership, collecting material together for their books and traveling around the world as wildlife and travel photographers. In 2002 Angela was the Overall Winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award. Her winning image was selected from more than 18,000 images submitted from 60 countries. This made Jonathan and Angela the only couple ever to have won this competition as individuals. Jonathan and Angela live in Nairobi, Kenya and have a permanent base at Governor’s Camp in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Their award winning images have appeared in books and magazines around the world, including National Geographic, Geo, Geographical, BBC Wildlife, Digital Photography, Outdoor Photographer, Outdoor Photography, Traveller, Wanderlust, EOS Magazine, Practical Photographer, Swara, Focus, Terre Savage.     Biology has been taught at Bristol – as Botany and Zoology – since before the University was founded in 1909. Bristol has made significant contributions to many fields, from animal cognition and medicinal plants to entomology, evolutionary Game Theory and bird flight – and the BBC Natural History Unit's proximity to the University has led to television careers for a number of graduates! In 1876, University College, the precursor to the University, appointed Dr. Frederick Adolph Leipner as Lecturer in Botany, Zoology and, amusingly, German. Leipner had trained at the Bristol Medical School, but taught botany and natural philosophy, later combining this with teaching in Vegetable Physiology at the Medical School. He became Professor of Botany in 1884 and was a founding member of the Bristol Naturalists' Society, becoming its President in 1893. Bristol today is proud of its interdisciplinary strengths and, among others, offers Joint Honours Degrees in Geology and Biology, and in Psychology and Zoology. A portent of these modern links is seen in one of the University's most notable early appointments, Conwy Lloyd Morgan, appointed as Professor of Zoology and Geology in 1884 and then – somehow fitting in service as Vice- Chancellor – becoming the first Chair in Psychology (and Ethics). Lloyd Morgan is most famous as a pioneer of the study of comparative animal cognition. He was a highly influential figure for the North American Behaviourist movement: “Lloyd Morgan's cannon” is a comparative psychologist's version of Occam's Razor whereby no behaviour should be ascribed to more complex cognitive mechanisms than strictly necessary. He was the first Fellow of the Royal Society to be elected for psychological work.
