our first show at an Amherst youth center. Scott Helland’s brother Eric’s band Mace played; they became The Outpatients. Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. May 1967 THE SUNSETS single “The Hot Generation” b/w “This Is What It’s All About” ARTIST: THE SUNSETS (Festival FK-1818) was issued to coincide with the release of Australian surf film of the same name. Both TITLE: Animal/Uptight, Out Of Sight songs being featured in the movie soundtrack. LABEL: Blank Recording Company CAT#: BRC007-7 The film was screened and scheduled for release was another single from THE SUNSETS, two more FORMAT: 7” songs from the movie. THE SUNSETS “Animal” / “Uptight, Out Of Sight” (Festival FK-1895) was scheduled GENRE: 1960’s Garage, Beat, Freakbeat, Psych and prepared to be released in August 1967. August 1967 came and went. NEW RELEASES FOR FEBRUARY 8, 2019 featuring: 313 SKITZO (NJ) THIN WHITE ROPE FOG WINDOW Exclusively Distributed by 313 Three Thirteen, CD STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 8, 2019 INFORMATION: ARTIST HOMETOWN: Pittsburgh, PA KEY MARKETS: Worldwide Metal Community FOR FANS OF: WARRIOR, SWORD, OMEN, ICON AND MALICE Around late-’83/early-’84, a group called DISCIPLINE took shape in Pittsburgh, PA; transitioning from playing covers into an original hard rock/metal outfit. DISCIPLINE laid down a two-song demo that gained local momentum via the Pittsburgh Steel radio show before disbanding in 1985, at which time the remaining members—founder Doug Appel (guitar), Mark Menold (guitar), and Ned Lyden (drums)—joined forces with two former members of another Pittsburgh act called OVERLORD—bassist David Kendrick and vocalist Tim Aymar (later of PHARAOH, CONTROL DENIED, PSYCHO SCREAM, TRIPLE X, and many more)—and thus 313 was born. By year’s end 1985, 313 had tracked a whopping 10 songs at Gamut Productions, achieving a ARTIST: 313 striking balance between catchy, melodic hard rock and a heavier lean toward traditional metal. TITLE: Three Thirteen Continued writing, rehearsing, and gigging ensued, amidst which an aggressive, faster-paced LABEL: Divebomb Records drummer by the name of Kirk Henry entered the fold—aiding 313’S continued growth toward CAT#: DIVE166-2 harder-edged metal. Finally, during the winter of 1987/1988, the group settled into Aircraft FORMAT: CD Recording Studios to complete what should have been their debut full-length album. Sadly, these GENRE: Heavy Metal would prove to be 313’s final sessions. After a failed contract with CBS-distributed PARC Records BOX LOT: 30 and a short-lived attempt to remain financially solvent as a cover act (operating under the name SRLP: $18.98 of Jet Screamer), mounting tensions within the lineup brought things to an end in 1988. -

A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts m Media Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand. Lauren Anderson 1999 Abstract. Popular music has a strong presence in many contemporary films, frequently replacing, or displacing, the 'classical' soundtrack. The question arises of whether a popular music soundtrack achieves similar functions to traditional, 'classical' film music. Investigating this question is the primary aim of this thesis. An outline of film music theory is followed by an overview of how meaning is produced in popular music. These two areas of discussion are then brought together in the neoformalist analyses of the textual relations between the popular music soundtrack and the narrative, characterisation, and themes of three contemporary films: Sliding Doors (1997, Peter Howitt), Empire Records (1995, Allan Moyle), and Topless Women Talk About Their Lives (1997, Harry Sinclair). The uses and functions of the music in these soundtracks are then compared to the conventions of 'classical' Hollywood film music. This thesis will show that the popular songs in the soundtracks of the three films generally fulfil one or more of six functions which are usually performed by 'classical' Hollywood film music. There are some important differences, however, as the songs frequently draw on features which are specific to popular music. -

The songs the group covered over the course of their ten-year career is far more revealing: SUICIDE, THE STOOGES, LEE HAZLEWOOD, MARTY ROBBINS, BOB DYLAN, CAN, and ROKY ERICKSON have all been rendered by the band in the studio and on-stage. That list goes a long way in explaining the mixture of raw, angular riffs, southern twang, and psychedelia that characterizes Exploring the Axis, the group’s 1985 debut. Frontman Guy Kyser, guitarist Roger Kunkel, bassist Stephen Tesluk, and drummer Jozef Becker ARTIST: THIN WHITE ROPE create a series of barren landscapes, instruments kicking up clouds of dust from the parched TITLE: Exploring the Axis earth like a rollicking, rickety ghost-train with failed brakes. At times Jeff Eyrich’s production approaches the wintry heir of Martin Hannett’s work with Joy Division. This climate is ideal for LABEL: Frontier Records Kyser, who delivers tales of isolation, allusion, and death; his voice a unsteady quake. Though CAT#: 31015-1/2 subsequent releases would see a maturing of the band’s sound, Exploring the Axis remains the FORMAT: LP/CD blueprint. -

Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory. -

"THROUGH THE ROOF AND UNDERGROUND": TRANSLOCAL HARDCORE PUNK IN LOS ANGELES AND LJUBLJANA by MINDY L. CLEGG Under the direction of Michelle Brattain ABSTRACT Punk moved from a marginal subculture to an underground counter-culture -- hardcore punk -- which shared musical culture and sense of a communal identity. Local punk scenes grew, in part due to attention from mass media. New kids in the scene brought new tensions and attracted the attention of authorities. Two police incidents signaled a shift in the punks© view of themselves. I examine two punk scenes from 1975 to 1985 in Los Angeles, USA and Ljubljana, Yugoslavia by looking at newspapers, television programs, fanzines, music, and clothing. I show that a loosely connected group of individuals, self-identified as punk, became increasingly similar as the parent cultures put increasing pressure on punks.
