  • How Much Do Children Interpret Television and Animated Film Contents?*
International Journal of Progressive Education, Volume 17 Number 1, 2021 © 2021 INASED How Much Do Children Interpret Television and Animated Film Contents?* Mustafa Türkmen i Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Abstract Animated films have an undeniable place in children's entertainment culture. The worldwide box office revenues indicate that these films reached many children in cinemas and were viewed on televisions by almost all children. The extent to which children can make sense of such content is still a question mark in minds. This study aims to demonstrate how children can interpret the animated film and the content of television they watch in general. The research was carried out by a mixed-method using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study group consisted of 210 children between the ages of 4-10. An average of 30 children was included in each age group. In this way, it is aimed to examine the change in the level of interpretation of the animated film and television content by children in each age group as age increases. In the research, a film (Toy Story 3) was selected and the realism of the characters, values and events in its content was examined through content analysis. Besides, a structured interview form consisting of values and reality section regarding the content viewed on TV has been developed. The children were allowed to watch the animated film and they were interviewed about the viewed content and relevant data was collected. As a result of the research, it was found that children in 4 and 5 age groups differed significantly from the children in 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 age groups in good-bad distinction, meaning and reality in the animated film.

  • Representation of Disabled People in Advertisements in Turkey
American Journal of Qualitative Research 2021, Vol. 5 No. 2, pp. 57-72 https://doi.org/10.29333/ajqr/11033 © 2021 AJQR. http://www.ajqr.org ISSN: 2576-2141 Representation of Disabled People in Advertisements in Turkey Aysun Dogutas1 Pamukkale University, Turkey ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to discover how disabled people are represented in advertisements in Turkey. Ten purposefully chosen TV channels (ATV, FOX, TV8, SHOW TV, KANAL D, STAR TV, TRT 1, KANAL 7, TRT HABER, TRT ÇOCUK) were used in a pilot study to identify ads featuring people with disabilities. Because the results of the pilot study showed no such advertisements, data for the current study were collected from internet. Three types of advertisements featuring people with disabilities emerged: public service announcements, consumption-centered ads, and supportive ads. Critical discourse analysis was applied to the data derived from the latter two types. Results indicate that the media, which play an important role not only in reflecting public attitudes and values regarding disability but also in shaping them, may assist in reducing stigma and misinformation and in increasing social acceptance and inclusion only if the portrayals are positive and comprehensive. Any positive change in attitude along with better programs and laws can accelerate the integration of people with disabilities into society. KEYWORDS: Advertisement, Disabled, Disability, Television, The Internet. Representation of Disabled People in Advertisements in Turkey According to data from the World Health Organization, over one billion of the world’s eight billion people live with a physical, emotional, or intellectual deficiency. Data from a 2002 study done at the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK; 2004) indicated that 8.5 million disabled people live in Turkey, representing 12.29% of the total population.
