1 The Invocation at Tilburg: Mysticism, Implicit Religion and Gravetemple’s Drone Metal by Owen Coggins 1.1 On 18th April 2013, an extremely slow, loud and noisy “drone metal” band Gravetemple perform at the Roadburn heavy metal and psychedelic rock festival in Tilburg in the Netherlands. After forty-five minutes of gradually intensifying, largely improvised droning noise, the band reach the end of their set. Guitarist Stephen O’Malley conjures distorted chords, controlled by a bank of effects pedals; vocalist Attila Csihar, famous for his time as singer for notorious and controversial black metal band Mayhem, ritualistically intones invented syllables that echo monastic chants; experimental musician Oren Ambarchi extracts strange sounds from his own looped guitar before moving to a drumkit to propel a scattered, urgent rhythm. Momentum overtaking him, a drumstick slips from Ambarchi’s hand, he breaks free of the drum kit, grabs for a beater, turns, and smashes the gong at the centre of the stage. For two long seconds the all-encompassing rumble that has amassed throughout the performance drones on with a kind of relentless inertia, still without a sonic acknowledgement of the visual climax. Finally, the pulsating wave from the heavily amplified gong reverberates through the corporate body of the audience, felt in physical vibration more than heard as sound. The musicians leave the stage, their abandoned instruments still expelling squalling sounds which gradually begin to dissipate. Listeners breathe out, perhaps open their eyes, raise their heads, shift their feet and awaken enough to clap and shout appreciation, before turning to friends or strangers, reaching for phrases and gestures, often in a vocabulary of ritual, mysticism and transcendence, which might become touchstones for recollection and communication of their individual and shared experience. -

Pētera Vaska un Borisa Avrameca iedvesmots, iepazina elektroni- interpretāciju ir šajā žanrā īstenojusi (burtiski) lēnu revolūciju. Iespējams pilnīgi pamatoti saka, ka Sunn O))) piederot lēnākā un zemākā skaņa pasaulē. Viņu Vozenkrofts ar mūzikas izdevēja Maika Hārdinga palīdzību. Tā ir kalpojusi par radošu “tramplīnu” tādiem māksliniekiem kā New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Džā sko mūziku. 2007.gadā sāka strādāt Betona rūpnīcā un tajā laikā arī apmeklēja kompozīcijas meistarklases Berlīnē pie profesora Dītera Maka, sāka spēlēt nosaukums aizgūts no vecajiem Sunn O))) ģitāras pastiprinātājiem. Jāpiebilst, ka vēloties panākt autentisku skanējumu, grupa priekš sava koncerta uz Rīgu Voublam, Robertam Vaietam, Einstürzende Neubauten un Current 93. Izdevniecība publicēja arī Eitnes Ni Bhraonainas pirmos ierakstus. Vēlāk viņa kļuva progroka grupā Olive Messa un sakrāja lielu industriālo skaņu kolekciju, ko izmanto savos elektroakustiskajos darbos. speciāli ved šos pastiprinātājus. A Brief History of the Telecaster In 1951 the Telecaster was introduced to the world by Leo Fender, a Southern California inventor and businessman. Now a legendary instrument available in dozens of variations, the iconic “Tele” became the world’s first successfully mass-produced solid body electric guitar. Fender's Esquire guitar was the first prototype for the Telecaster and was produced in limited numbers. It was introduced in 1950 and renamed the Broadcaster shortly after. To avoid confusion and trademark issues with Gretsch Broadkaster drums, the guitar was renamed as the Telecaster. The Esquire was brought back as a single-pickup version of the Telecaster in 1951. The Telecaster’s simple, straightforward design along with its versatility and playability have led to its longevity. It features a single cutaway body and two single-coil pickups that produce the Tele’s bright and twangy trademark tone. The headstock has six single-side tuners, and the original design featured three innovative barrel-shaped saddles that allowed guitarists to adjust the string height for better playability. Fender incorporated production techniques no other guitar builder had used previously. Bodies were built using solid pieces of wood, referred to as blanks, and cavities for the electronics were made using a router. -

Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption. -

Richard Berry, the writer of “Louie Louie”, headlines the Waterfront Blues Festival. While Berry was in town, the Oregon Historical Society honored him and members of the Kingsmen with the installation of a plaque at 411 S.W. 13th Ave, the original location of Northwestern recording stu- dios, where the Kingsmen’s epic hit “Louie Louie” was recorded on April 13, 1963. Berry wrote “Louie Louie” in 1955 in Los Angeles and recorded it with the Pharoahs as a calypso-tinged R&B number. In 1960, Seattle’s Rockin’ Robin Roberts covered it with the Wailers. The Kingsmen heard the Wailers version on a jukebox and decided to record it themselves. Paul Re- vere & The Raiders recorded “Louie Louie” at North- western the day after, for Columbia Records. -

Sunn O))) Was Formed in 1998 by Stephen O'malley and Greg
Sunn O))) was formed in 1998 by Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. They were initially based in Seattle, shortly before moving to Los Angeles, and O'Malley now resides in Paris. The band have become known for their very recognisable “drone metal” sound, and extremely loud live performances. Widely considered pioneering, their music can be described as very slow, with distorted guitars, and an emphasis on texture rather than rhythm. Their name, pronounced "sun", is a reference to the Sunn amplifier brand, and their logo is that of the amplifier’s too. Over their seven solo studio albums and scores of EPs, live albums and other releases, Sunn O))) have collaborated and recorded with artists across the globe, including Scott Walker, Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Japan’s Boris, Norway’s Ulver, Nurse With Wound, Petra Hayden, Julian Cope (The Teardrop Explodes), John Wiese, Oren Ambarchi, Malefic, Julian Priester, Eyvind Kang, Dylan Carlson, Stuart Dempster, and many more. Their early releases were met with acclaim across various underground music scenes, and steadily their profile has risen, becoming something of a household name in the alternative music, and arts worlds. The band have played across the world at many prestigious festivals and venues, in the past year at David Byrne’s Meltdown at the Southbank Centre in London, and curating a four day program at Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht. Other notable appearances include Barcelona’s Sonar (2009), Krakow’s Unsound (2009), CTM Berlin (2013), Japan’s Earthdom (2007) and Leave Them All Behind (2012), North Carolina’s Hopscotch (2012), Australia’s Totally Huge New Music Festival (2007) and All Tomorrow’s Parties/The Nightmare Before Christmas (2003, 2004, 2007 and 2009) and Supersonic (2007 and 2009) in the UK. -

A History of Fender Musical Instruments and Founder-Leo Fender (As documented by Wikopedia) Fender Musical Instruments Corporation of Scottsdale, Arizona is a manufacturer of stringed instruments and amplifiers, such as solid-body electric guitars, including the Stratocaster and the Telecaster. The company, previously named the Fender Electric Instru- ment Manufacturing Company, was founded in Fullerton, California, by Clarence Leonidas "Leo" Fender in 1946. Leo Fender also designed one of the first commercially successful solid-body electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass), which has become known in rock, jazz, country, Motown, funk, and other types of music. The company is a privately held corporation, with the controlling majority of its stock owned by a group of its own company officers and managers. William (Bill) Mendello is Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer and James Broenen is Chief Fi- nancial Officer. Fender's headquarters are in Scottsdale, Arizona with manufacturing facilities in Corona, California (USA) and Ensenada, Baja California (Mexico). History Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the 'Broadcaster'; 'Esquire' is a single pickup version)[1] the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass); and popular Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. While Fender was not the first to manufacture electric guitars, as other companies and luthiers had produced electric guitars since the late 1920s, none was as commercially successful as Fender's.
