Telecaster Buying Guide Posted on Sunday, 01 December 2013 16:19. From: Musiciansfriend’s hub The Electric Guitar that Transformed American Music Table of Contents A Brief History of the Telecaster Tele Players: a Who’s Who of Guitar Wizardry Basic Telecaster Features Squier Telecasters Fender Telecasters USA Made Telecaster Guitars Fender Custom Shop So, Which Telecaster is Right for You? A Brief History of the Telecaster In 1951 the Telecaster was introduced to the world by Leo Fender, a Southern California inventor and businessman. Now a legendary instrument available in dozens of variations, the iconic “Tele” became the world’s first successfully mass-produced solid body electric guitar. Fender's Esquire guitar was the first prototype for the Telecaster and was produced in limited numbers. It was introduced in 1950 and renamed the Broadcaster shortly after. To avoid confusion and trademark issues with Gretsch Broadkaster drums, the guitar was renamed as the Telecaster. The Esquire was brought back as a single-pickup version of the Telecaster in 1951. The Telecaster’s simple, straightforward design along with its versatility and playability have led to its longevity. It features a single cutaway body and two single-coil pickups that produce the Tele’s bright and twangy trademark tone. The headstock has six single-side tuners, and the original design featured three innovative barrel-shaped saddles that allowed guitarists to adjust the string height for better playability. Fender incorporated production techniques no other guitar builder had used previously. Bodies were built using solid pieces of wood, referred to as blanks, and cavities for the electronics were made using a router.

Richard Berry, the writer of “Louie Louie”, headlines the Waterfront Blues Festival. While Berry was in town, the Oregon Historical Society honored him and members of the Kingsmen with the installation of a plaque at 411 S.W. 13th Ave, the original location of Northwestern recording stu- dios, where the Kingsmen’s epic hit “Louie Louie” was recorded on April 13, 1963. Berry wrote “Louie Louie” in 1955 in Los Angeles and recorded it with the Pharoahs as a calypso-tinged R&B number. In 1960, Seattle’s Rockin’ Robin Roberts covered it with the Wailers. The Kingsmen heard the Wailers version on a jukebox and decided to record it themselves. Paul Re- vere & The Raiders recorded “Louie Louie” at North- western the day after, for Columbia Records.

  • The Making of a Cultural Icon: the Electric Guitar
Music and Arts in Action | Volume 4 | Issue 2 The Making of a Cultural Icon: The Electric Guitar WILLIAM F. DANAHER Department of Sociology & Anthropology| College of Charleston | USA* ABSTRACT This article investigates how products of material culture can become cultural icons. Employing ideas from the production of culture perspective, this research traces the historical process by which the electric guitar was created, the role of the media, and the power of gatekeepers and musicians. The article discusses more broadly how this case extends the production of culture perspective by linking it to broader social changes, such as McDonaldization and a throwaway society. *66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424, USA © Music and Arts in Action/Danaher 2014 | ISSN: 1754-7105 | Page 74 http://musicandartsinaction.net/index.php/maia/article/view/electricguitaricon Music and Arts in Action | Volume 4 | Issue 2 INTRODUCTION This paper concentrates on the electric guitar by first investigating how the electric guitar was created. The development of the electric guitar in the United States is analyzed from the 1950s to the present day to show how certain guitars were raised to iconic status. Even though the sociological study of music has a long history, sociological research on the instruments used to make music has been sparse with notable recent exceptions (see for instance Bijsterveld and Schulp, 2004; Pinch and Trocco, 2002; Ryan and Peterson, 2001; Waxman, 2004). This article addresses this gap by showing how a material aspect of culture, the electric guitar, was important in helping to “create culture”, as Peterson (1997) puts it, and how this led to its iconic status.

  • Gibson Vs. Fender: Innovation Paths in the Early Electric Guitar Industry (1945–1984)
XXVIIe Conférence Internationale de Management Stratégique Gibson vs. Fender: Innovation paths in the early Electric Guitar Industry (1945–1984) Rayna, Thierry École Polytechnique, i3-CRG (UMR CNRS 9217) [email protected] Striukova, Ludmila Skema Business School, Université Côte d’Azur [email protected] Résumé : This article investigates the two radically different innovation paths chosen by Gibson and Fender, the two major electric guitar manufacturers, during the period 1945–1984. The beginning of this period corresponds both to the entrance of Fender in a market then dominated by Gibson and to the birth of the electric guitar. The article shows that the period 1945–1958 is one of intensive innovation, albeit of a different type, from both manufacturers. Fender’s innovation was inspired by engineering and electronics, while Gibson’s was rooted in craftsmanship and tradition. These very few years, which defined what electric guitar is, were then followed by a period of innovation deadlock (1958–1984). This article demonstrates that this was not due to a lack of innovative activities, but, instead, to a growing misunderstanding of consumer needs and to sterile attempts to capture each other’s market share. Mots-clés : radical innovation, market entry, engineering, craftsmanship, trajectories 1 Montpelier, 6-8 juin 2018 XXVIIe Conférence Internationale de Management Stratégique INTRODUCTION Although electric guitar has, arguably, been for more than half a century the most famous icon of popular music and companies manufacturing them have demonstrated a rather unusual longevity and leadership (Gibson, one of the two market leaders was founded in 1894), little attention (if any) has been given in the literature to this industry.

  • T-MODEL the Fender® Telecaster® Put the Solidbody Electric Guitar on the Map in 1950—Revolutionizing the Sound of Music
T-MODEL The Fender® Telecaster® put the solidbody electric guitar on the map in 1950—revolutionizing the sound of music. Artists including Keith Richards (“Brown Sugar”), George Harrison (“Let It Be”) and Andy Summers (“Roxanne”) have favored these guitars. Based on* 1960 Fender® Telecaster® Custom. Leo Fender’s Telecaster®, originally known as the Broadcaster, was the first commercially successful solidbody electric guitar and has been in continuous production for over fifty years, powering the Nashville sound and a long list of rock and jazz guitar luminaries. Note: The neck pickup position of this model, like the original, has a very “deep” sound and the tone control is bypassed. Based on* 1968 Fender® Telecaster® Thinline. Faced with the difficulty of obtaining lightweight ash, Fender introduced the Thinline model in 1967. The chambered body reduced the weight to about half that of a typical Tele®, while traditional electronics delivered a variation of the classic Tele® sound. Based on* modified 1968 Fender® Telecaster®. Players looking for more versatility from the Tele® discovered they could get a more powerful sound by wiring the two pickups in series (as on a humbucking pickup). SPANK The hugely popular Fender® Stratocaster® can be heard on hits by legendary guitarists Jimi Hendrix (“Foxy Lady”), Stevie Ray Vaughan (“Pride and Joy”), Eric Clapton (“Layla”) and many others. Based on* 1959 Fender® Stratocaster®. Considered a radical departure when introduced in 1954, the Stratocaster® influenced electric guitar design more than any other single instrument— and its distinctive comfort-contoured body, bolt-on neck and versatile electronics have become industry-standard features.
