However, recent polling suggests that what really exercises UKIP voters is not Europe, but the thorny issue of immigration. UKIP have seen a surge in support recently and its Leader, Nigel Farage, has been marketing his party as if it were, in the words of one commentator, “a Thatcher era tribute band”. Let’s see if he takes that as a compliment. Good morning. NIGEL FARAGE: (laughing) Good morning. JEREMY VINE: Is it a compliment or not? NIGEL FARAGE: Well one thing for certain: whether you agree with Thatcher or not, at least that was a period of time when we had politics of conviction, ideas, and general elections really 1 mattered. And now what do we have? We have leaders of the so-called main parties, none of whom have ever had a job, lived in the real world, and it’s very difficult on the really big issues to tell them apart. This thesis situates the question in early modern England by investigating the activity of persuasion on the commercial stage, contending that, when plays sought to represent persuasion or be persuasive themselves, many of their tactics were borrowed from religious sources. The ongoing process of Reformation in England required an investment in persuasive methods for the purposes of religious education and conversion. Protestant reform may have instigated the persuasive practices, but the ensuing heterogeneity of belief enabled multiple confessional perspectives to compete for hearts and minds, creating a “culture of persuasion” that profoundly influenced early modern modes of communication, including dramatic ones. While religious conversion strategies could not be reproduced directly on the stage, I claim that playwrights made use of the form of such strategies. Overlaying these various forms with content relevant to the play, they capitalized on the persuasive meanings inherent in the forms without offending the censors or derailing the story. Chapter One begins with an investigation into the evangelical metrical psalms. I argue that the shape, sound and meaning of a musical psalm reverberates in a drinking song in The Shoemaker’s Holiday, evoking an ii exploration of the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in the creation of community identity.

The oppression of transgender people in the US and globally is fed and fueled by the religious, scientific, and political discourses of the transnational “ex-gay” movement, which provides the ideological and material foundation of Christian Right politics. Using critical discourse analysis of ex-gay texts, we analyze the implications of these discourses in the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of society’s gender structure. This movement is one of the most insidious—and overlooked—sources of cisgenderism and transmisogyny today, constructing gender variance as sin, mental illness, and danger—with catastrophic consequences for transgender people, and those along the transfemale/feminine spectrum in particular. Europe’s vote pointed to a Eurosceptic surge challenging the already established mainstream parties in its member states. Far-right populist parties as we know them today began to emerge in the 1980s, while parties that were linked with fascist ideology in the past (e.g. MSI 1 in Italy) started to evolve in order to create a more legiti- mate image and attract the electorate.

    Executive Summary The European Parliament elections on 22 May 2014 come at a time when voter disenchantment with mainstream political parties is high; Euroscepticism fed by anti-EU parties is growing; and the electoral threat posed by the UK Independence Party threatens to infuse the political debate with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim and xenophobic sentiments. The European Parliament is the only elected body in the EU machinery making an important avenue for the articulation of citizen interests and concerns over the direction of EU policymaking. With the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the European Parliament elections in 2014 will, for the first time, give EU citizens a say in the election of the European Commission President through the indirect election of the office by MEPs in the 2014-2019 Assembly. Beyond the wider implications of the election for the governance of the Eurozone economies; recession and bailouts, the 2014 election will have a considerable impact on the discourse on minorities in the EU, particularly Muslims, as far right parties across the continent mobilise to exploit anti-EU sentiment to further advance their anti-Muslim attitudes and policies. The threat of sufficient numbers of MEPs representing far right parties being elected and establishing a political grouping in the European Parliament is credible in the current climate. Moreover, as mainstream parties grapple with the electoral challenge posed by far right parties, like UKIP, on issues such immigration, the balance of power between Member States and Brussels, and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights over UK courts, the likelihood of far right ideas influencing the direction of mainstream discourse is a very real possibility.
