TOE NEWFIE NEWSLETTER of the Newfoundland Study Group of SNAPS Number 3 January/February 1986 We continue with the list of Twentieth Century Post Offices of Newfoundland . This time we begin the second round . The dates of operation for Abrahams Cove through Chance Cove West are included in this issue of the Newsletter. Look over your collection and compare with this list. Please notify Palmer if you can confirm a year of operation not on the list. Send a photocopy if possible to Palmer Moffat , 4542 East Camino de Oro, Tucson, Arizona 85718 USA. Most members of this group have paid their dues. If there is a red check at the bottom of this page, your dues are due. Dues are $3 . 00 a year in U.S. funds or $4.00 a year in Canadian funds. This will be the last "complimentary" newsletter. A Correction Bob Pratt is looking for a 1 cent provisional on a 3 cent Queen Victoria used earlier than 19 October 1897 not 16 October 1897 as previously reported. Send a photocopy of any strike earlier than this date to Robert Pratt, 7912 North Beach Drive , Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53217 USA. Another Project Richard J. Wendt of 215 West Elmwood , Clawson , Michigan 48017 USA is interested in exchanging information on the " 235" cancel. He would appreciate receiving photocopies of any covers bearing this cancel including backstamps from any study group member. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR REPORTING N'F'L'D DATE STAMPS by Palmer Moffat The year dates shown for each post office indicate that the office has appeared on one or more source lists and/or that a date stamp has been seen on stamp , piece or cover for that year. it does not necessarily mean that the office was in operation. The "districts " shown in most cases are the electoral districts into which Newfoundland was divided during the period 1900-1925. A general revision of these districts was made in 1925 and some additional districts were added in subsequent years . Please use the district abbreviations purely as a geographical aid to locating the town. Page 1 Chairman & Newsletter Editor: C.A . Stillions , 5031 Eskridge Terrace, N . W.. Washington , D .C. 20016 U.S.A. Dues paid ( ) Dues are due ( ) NEWFIE NEWSLETTE January/February 198 The following comments apply to the "outport " offices - those outside of St . John's. OUTPORT DATE STAMPS: The most common date stamp type used n N ew f oun dl an d b etween 1900-1949 was the split ring, or brok n circle type. Almost every town used this type at some ti e during the period . As of now, it appears that the split ring w s the only device used in most towns . The double broken circ e type was used in the early 1900's by a very few towns. 0th r types seem generally to have had limited usage except for t e circular date stamp. This type was used almost exclusively In HARBOUR GRACE from about 1919 on, and to a lesser extent in GRA FALLS. The duplex style used in the outports was current at t e turn of the century. The only town I know of, at this tim , which used the duplex type are: AVONDALE, CAMPBELLTON, CORN R BROOK, HODGES COVE, LANCE BROOK, NORRIS ARM, NORRIS POIN TIZZARD'S HARBOUR, and TRAYTOWN. The rectangular date stamp appears to have been in continuous u e for limited periods in a relatively few offices. It was us d mostly from 1918-1937 with some further use into the ear y 1940's. The large oval also had continuous use in a relatively flew offices from about 1926-1935+ . Two notable exceptions CARBONEAR in 1906 and ST. ANTHONY, R.N.M. in 1913. The double outer circle came into use about 1930. The single outer, single inner circle date stamp is solely (?) CORNER BROOK from about 1941 on. Machine cancels do not appear to have been used outside of JOHN'S and ST. JOHN ' S EAST until the late 1940's. Straight line markings come as one line , two lines , and th ee lines . Of those I have seen, only the three line style ha a dater. Roller cancels are not properly date stamps , as they have no dater. However, several towns used them with the town n me shown, so they are included. The following are typical examples of some outport date sta with suggested reference numbers. There are many variations size, composition and letters, etc. Page 2 NEWFOUNDLAND DATE STAMPS OUTPORT TYPES 1900-1040 'alDs ' Z iOCB0 r is w f'D to lb 2 SPLIT RING or BROKEN CIRCLE SINGLE OUTER CIRCLE I POST OFFICE:. 23 JUN 1923 J 3 4 s DUPLEX RECTANGLE - WAVY or DOTTED DOUBLE OUTER OVAL 6 7 • DOUBLE OUTER CIRCLE SINGLE OUTER, MACHINE (UNIVERSAL) SINGLE INNER CIRCLE DEC 16 PORT AUXCHOIX TERRA tJOVA-NEWF D N FL D 9 100 lob STRAIGHT LINE ROLLER Page 3 NEWFIE NEWSLETTE.
