VAndenBerg research associate, geoscience, Museums victoria, gpo Box 666, Melbourne victoria 3001, australia correspondence: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT: the topmost lancefieldian (la3, earliest floian, early ordovician) Paratetragraptus approximatus Biozone of victoria contains a previously undocumented graptolite fauna that includes, in addition to the nominative species, Paratetragraptus cooperi sp. nov., P. thomassmithi sp. nov., P. acclinans, P.? henrywilliamsi sp. nov., and Tshallograptus cymulus gen. et sp. nov., interpreted as the direct ancestor of Tshallograptus fruticosus (J. hall). taxa such as Kinnegraptus, Laxograptus, Pseudobryograptus, Phyllograptus, Tetragraptus and Loganograptus also make their first appearance in this zone. the succeeding Bendigonian stage, traditionally subdivided into four biozones using overlapping ranges of P. approximatus and the four- and three-stiped morphs of the T. fruticosus clade, is revised to accommodate the earlier than documented appearance of the 3-stiped morph, here renamed Tshallograptus tridens sp. nov., in the Be1 Biozone. the new subdivision consists of three biozones: Be1 P. approximatus + T. fruticosus Biozone, Be2+3 T. fruticosus + T. tridens Biozone, and Be4 T. tridens Biozone. T. tridens is vanishingly rare in Be1 and Be2 but appears in abundance in Be3 which is retained as a local subzone. Keywords: lancefieldian, Bendigonian, early floian, Paratetragraptus, Tshallograptus gen. nov., victorian graptolite zones the early floian (la3–Be4) graptolite succession of four biozones of the Bendigonian, and introduced the letter– victoria encompasses one of the most remarkable numbering shorthand system in current use (vandenBerg diversification events of graptolites, with the appearance & cooper 1992) (figure 1a). of at least 70 new species (vandenBerg & cooper 1992). elsewhere, investigations of early floian sequences for correlation purposes, the two most important of these have found differences in the stratigraphic ranges of T. are Paratetragraptus approximatus and two species of fruticosus and T. tridens. in the valhallfonna formation in Tshallograptus gen. nov. that were formerly regarded spitsbergen, cooper and fortey (1982) found an upward as morphs of Pendeograptus fruticosus. these are the change in the frequency of the two species that is similar 4-stiped T. fruticosus (hall) and the 3-stiped T. tridens to that recorded in victoria.     144 Obituary—Thomas Sergeant Hall, D.Sc. His work extended to every department of botany. Perhaps the most important of all was that on fossil botany. He was an intimate friend of the late Professor Williamson. His Pal&ophytologie, published in 1887, was translated for the Oxford Press in 1892. In it the •author impresses on botanists the value and significance of the geological record as affecting plants. Of special importance may be mentioned his paper on Bennettites •Gibsonianus, a fossil Cycad from the Isle of "Wight; on the •Cycadofilices, Protopitys, Medullosa, etc.; on Devonian and Lower Carboniferous Plants; and on Psaronius. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Linnean Society in 1887, •of the Eoyal Society in 1902, and of the Geological Society in 1906. He received the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1911, and was made a Sc.D. of the University of Cambridge at the Darwin celebration in 1909. [D. H. S. A SEKIOUS gap has been made in the ranks of Australian geologists by the deeply regretted death of Dr. Hall, on December, 21, 1915, at the comparatively early age of 57. Dr. Hall occupied the post of Lecturer in Biology at the Melbourne University, where he was greatly esteemed as a teacher. He was' perhaps better known abroad as an ardent geological worker amongst the Victorian graptolitic and Tertiary rocks. In 1899 he contributed an important paper to this Magazine on " The Graptolite Rocks of Victoria, Australia".
