National of China Making Triumphant Return to The Venetian Macao Performances celebrating the 50th anniversary of Chinese classical ballet The Red Detachment of Women

(Macao, June 26, 2014) –The prestigious National Ballet of China is celebrating the 1964 debut performance of The Red Detachment of Women, by staging this original, well-known Chinese classical ballet once again in major cities throughout mainland China. The Venetian® Macao will be the last stop of the once-in-a-lifetime tour In Memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere of The Red Detachment of Women by the National Ballet of China, with the last three of the total 50 performances being held at The Venetian Theatre Friday-Sunday, July 11-13, 2014. The National Ballet of China last performed to delighted crowds at The Venetian Theatre December 2012 for the Chinese version of the much-loved Christmas classic The Nutcracker. France and Italy, contributing to the international reputation of the talented troupe. The final three performances of In Memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere of The Red Detachment of Women by the National Ballet of China are definitely not to be missed.

The National Ballet of China Founded in 1959, the National Ballet of China is the country’s only national , its dancers and musicians all graduates of professional dance academies and music conservatories across China. In its early days, Russian ballet master Pyotr Gusev and other Russian teachers helped lay a solid foundation for the company using their experience from the Russian school of classical ballet. For the past 55 years, the National Ballet of China has introduced a wealth of outstanding classical and contemporary ballet works to a Chinese audience. The ballet troupe highly values the fine tradition of classical ballets and also attaches great importance to the ballet works created by artists of different styles and schools in the contemporary world. By using ballet as a foreign art form, the troupe has succeeded in depicting the Chinese people's life and culture to the world, and has attracted the attention of the international ballet world.

In Memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere of The Red Detachment of Women by the National Ballet of China Premiered on Sept. 26, 1964, in Beijing, The Red Detachment of Women tells the story of a poor peasant's daughter, Qionghua, who is persecuted by a deceitful landowner but is rescued by a Red Army cadre and later joins the army’s Red Detachment of Women. It is the first and most successful full-length Chinese ballet, with both the theme and content reflecting a very unique Chinese style. The work has been hailed as a fine example of the successful combination of Western ballet technique with Chinese folk dancing, and is considered an important milestone in Chinese ballet history.

In Memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere of The Red Detachment of Women by the National Ballet of China will take the stage at The Venetian Theatre for a three- performance run.
