Forshee, Ph.D., Early Education & Family Studies Portland Community College Portland, Oregon INTRODUCTION Homophobia and transphobia are complicated topics that touch on core identity issues. Most people tend to conflate sexual orientation with gender identity, thus confusing two social distinctions. Understanding the differences between these concepts provides an opportunity to build personal knowledge, enhance skills in allyship, and effect positive social change. GROUND RULES (1015 minutes) Materials: chart paper, markers, tape. Due to the nature of the topic area, it is essential to develop ground rules for each student to follow. Ask students to offer some rules for participation in the postperformance workshop (i.e., what would help them participate to their fullest). Attempt to obtain a group consensus before adopting them as the official “social contract” of the group. Useful guidelines include the following (Bonner Curriculum, 2009; Hardiman, Jackson, & Griffin, 2007): Respect each viewpoint, opinion, and experience. Use “I” statements – avoid speaking in generalities. The conversations in the class are confidential (do not share information outside of class). Set own boundaries for sharing. Share air time. Listen respectfully. No blaming or scapegoating. Focus on own learning. Clear definitions also provide a context and platform for discussion. Homophobia: a psychological term originally developed by Weinberg (1973) to define an irrational hatred, anxiety, and or fear of homosexuality. -

The Role of the United Nations in Combatting Discrimination and Violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex People A Programmatic Overview 19 June 2018 This paper provides a snapshot of the work of a number of United Nations entities in combatting discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics and related work in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and intersex communities around the world. It has been prepared by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the basis of inputs provided by relevant UN entities, and is not intended to be either exhaustive or detailed. Given the evolving nature of UN work in this field, it is likely to benefit from regular updating1. EVERY CHILD DESERVES A FAMILY ACT SNAPSHOT: LGBT ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE PARENTING IN OKLAHOMA Across the United States, approximately 3 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) Americans have had a child, and as many as 6 million American children and adults have an LGBT parent. Among LGBT adults under 50 living alone or with a spouse or partner, 48% of women and 20% of men are raising a child under 18. 19% of transgender adults have had a child. Oklahoma Foster Care and Adoption Figures: • According to a 2010 report by the Williams Institute, there are 1,280 same-sex couples raising an estimated 2,560 children in the state of Oklahoma. • In 2017, of the almost 443,000 youth in foster care in the U.S., 9,312 of them resided in Oklahoma, 4,074 of whom were waiting to be adopted at the end of the fiscal year. • In 2017, 2,593 children were adopted from the foster care system in Oklahoma. Foster Care and Adoption Laws: • Oklahoma law allows any adult at least 21 years old or a husband and wife jointly to petition to adopt. Okla. Stat. Tit 10 § 7503-1.1. • While state law provides that a "husband and wife jointly" may petition to adopt, because marriages of same-sex couples are now recognized nationwide, same-sex spouses should be able to adopt jointly. The Swedish Federation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights RFSL Oral Statement: 65th Commission on the Status of Women General discussion (Item 3) Follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women and to the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly My name is Khawla, and as a young, queer, woman, I am making this intervention on behalf of the LBTI Caucus, an informal group of over 300 representatives covering every region of the world. Lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex women and girls and gender non-conforming people continue to experience alarming rates of gender-based violence because of our real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics. The multiple and intersecting forms of violence and discrimination we face, directly create and affect real, specific, and, often times, onerous barriers to our full and effective participation in public life and decision- making. Yet these are cornerstones of empowerment, sustainable development, and climate justice. The scarce representation of LBTI and gender non-conforming women, girls, and people in political parties, central and local governance structures, trade unions, professional associations and other institutions, exacerbates the denial of our rights to food, water, housing, healthcare, education, employment, safety, and security. This exclusion from public life and decision-making has become even clearer in States’ responses to Covid-19, where LBTI, gender non-conforming, and other vulnerable people are excluded from humanitarian response efforts, in the design and implementation of mitigation programs, and in shaping response initiatives. Globally, systematic attacks on sexual and reproductive health and rights and the freedom of assembly, expression, and association, driven by anti-rights, conservative, patriarchal, populist, and fundamentalist actors, and fuelled by sexism, racism, transphobia and xenophobia, are increasing. -
Film Essay for The
The Kid By Jeffrey Vance “The Kid” (1921) is one of Charles Chaplin’s finest achievements and remains universally beloved by critics and audiences alike. The film is a perfect blend of comedy and drama and is arguably Chap- lin’s most personal and autobiographical work. Many of the settings and the themes in the film come right out of Chaplin’s own impoverished London child- hood. However, it was the combination of two events, one tragic (the death of his infant son) and one joyful (his chance meeting with Jackie Coogan), that led Chaplin to shape the tale of the abandoned child and the lonely Tramp. The loss of three-day-old Norman Spencer Chaplin undoubtedly had a great effect on Chaplin, and the emotional pain appears to have triggered his creativ- ity, as he began auditioning child actors at the Chap- lin Studios ten days after his son’s death. It was dur- ing this period that Chaplin encountered a four-year- old child performer named Jackie Coogan at Orphe- um Theater in Los Angeles, where his father had just performed an eccentric dance act. Chaplin spent more than an hour talking to Jackie in the lob- by of the Alexandria Hotel, but the idea of using Jackie in a film did not occur to him. After he heard that Roscoe Arbuckle had just signed Coogan, Chaplin agonized over his missed opportunity. Later, Charlie Chaplin as The Tramp sits in a doorway with the he discovered that Arbuckle had signed Jack orphan he has taken under his wing (Jackie Coogan). -
