Message from Head of School:

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a brilliant Book Week we have had. It was lovely to see the children snuggling up with a story, enjoying hot chocolate whilst the staff read a selection of wonderful books. Thank you to the CPTA for providing the drinks and snacks. The story jars have been a real focal point for the week, do have a look in the front entrance hall – they are absolutely amazing – and highlight our learning values perfectly, with the children being so creative and curious in their learning. The continued success of the big book swap has ensured that pre-loved books have found a new home; it was a good way to recycle books in an environmentally friendly way.

Red class should be feeling very proud of themselves following their poised performance at the Big Sing recently. They sang and played their instruments with confidence and obvious enjoyment. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who worked so hard to bring the event together.

Finally, as you know Mrs Holding is expecting a baby later this school year. I am very pleased to let you know that Mrs Hooper will teach the class full time during the maternity leave from late June until the end of the summer term. This will ensure excellent continuity for Blue class. Staffing for September 2020 will be organised later next term.

Spotlight: Our spotlight this week falls on our year 5 and 6 talented sporting pupils. They enjoyed a session of activities at QE School and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. They have written

about it in the newsletter.

Certificate Winners 6th March 2020

Copplestone Breakfast and After School Club: We are delighted to announce that we will be taking over the running of the after school club from All Stars after the Easter Break (Wednesday 15th April 2020). The Copplestone After School Club will be available Monday to Friday from 3.30pm until 5.30pm in 2 sessions – 3.30 to 4.30pm and 4.30 to 5.30pm. Each session will be charged at £5. If your child attends one of the Achieve4All Sports Clubs and you require childcare until 5.30pm, you will be able to book just the 2nd session with Copplestone After School Club for £5. Children who currently attend All Stars on a regular basis will receive an enrolment and booking form in the next few days and further copies will be available from the school office. You may have noticed that notifications have come through on Parentmail inviting you to top-up your balance for After School Club. This is an auto-generated notification as we have set up the payment on Parentmail. Obviously you need only top-up if you intend to use the club or if you have an outstanding balance once sessions have been booked. Dieuwka will continue to run the After School Club and we are pleased to welcome her to our school team. Copplestone After School Club will take place in the main school building with timetabled activities planned either in the school hall, library or orange classroom. A light snack will be provided but you may wish to bring your own. Please can the children bring their own water bottles. Collection at the end of the session will be from the external orange classroom door located in the front KS1 playground. We are looking forward to being able to offer wrap-around care for our families at Copplestone with both our Breakfast Club and now our After School Club. Thank you for your support.

Green Class Forest School: During Forest School we made our favourite book covers out of natural materials we found in the woods. We used sticks, seeds, bark, leaves, grass and much more. We had lots of fun but best of all it didn’t rain!!

Tuesday 10th March – Crediton Community Bookshop Book Fair:

We are delighted to welcome Crediton Community Bookshop into school on Tuesday 10th March to celebrate World Book Day. Their schools team will bring the best recently published titles to share with children, reading extracts to encourage them to try new books to inspire reading. All books will be reduced for the book fair, with one book for £6 and two for £10. Please send money into school in an envelope with your child’s name. We hope you will all support us in encouraging reading.

Red Class Big Sing Event:

Gifted & Talented Workshop at QE: On Tuesday 3rd March Monty, Layla, Harry, Karl, Isla, Jake and Olivia went to QE Western Road to participate in a Gifted and Talented day. There were a series of 11 events which included a 20m para sprint, agility run and static balance. We talked about how in your career you will fail and the way you can bounce back. We also had the chance to use the gym. It was a great experience and we used equipment we had

Nut Free School: A little reminder further to our letter and Parentmail earlier this week. We are asking that all parents exercise care and consideration when providing snacks, and when planning the contents of lunch boxes. We cannot have nuts in school in any form so please do consider the contents of: *Peanut butter sandwiches *Chocolate spreads *Some cereal bars *Sauces that contain nuts, e.g satay *Biscuits/Cookies/Cakes that contain nuts Basically, if the label has Peanuts listed on the ingredients list in bold then it should not be brought into school. Please see below example of a food label:

Blue Class Visit to Kents Cavern: As part of our Stone Age learning, Blue Class went on a trip to Kents Cavern. These are prehistoric caves in the hills on the coast of Torquay. We had an amazing time and needed to use all of our senses during the day just as Stone Age humans would have thousands of years ago. The best part of the day was when our guide turned off the lights when we were deep in the caves. We had to listen hard as we could not see anything. When we put our hands in front of our faces we couldn’t even see them even though they were touching the end of our noses! We liked looking at the replica skulls from different eras in history. We got to hold the skull of a child, feel elk skin that they would have used as clothing and look at bones. It was really interesting. Our guide told us that may different types of animals used the caves over the centuries such as cave bears, elk, cave lions, hyenas and humans from different eras including Neanderthal man! We enjoyed using our imagination to see the face in the cave wall made from Calcite. The Romans who came to Devon also used the caves and they left silver coins at the base of the face – they thought it was a God; the Romans loved to worship a God!

Sport Relief: We are looking forward to getting active and raising some money for Sport Relief on Friday 13th March. Children may wear their favourite sporting kit to school and if you wish to make a donation then we suggest £1.

Purple class are going to help coordinate the daily miles during the week and see how far we can run in total.

Sport Relief is an initiative of Comic Relief which is the trading name of Charity Projects, a registered charity in England and Wales (326568) and Scotland (SC039730)

Pre-School News: This week at Pre-School we have been reading the story about Goldilocks and the three Bears. We have been talking about sizes - small, medium and large and have enjoyed acting out the story with our friends with Bear masks and a Goldilocks mask. On Wednesday the Pre-School children wore their pyjamas and loved drinking hot chocolate whilst listening to a story for World Book Week and at Carpet Time the children shared with each other their favourite stories.
