Copplestone Primary School Newsletter [email protected] Edition 15 Friday 3rd May 2019 Message from Head of School: Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed the amazing weather over Easter and some well-deserved rest and relaxation. We came back to school with a bang – especially in Year 4, who enjoyed a wonderful residential trip and a range of outdoor activities. All of the children enjoyed it immensely and a huge thanks to Mrs Marshall for organising everything and to Ms Webber who accompanied us. We have taken a lot of photos but I found a couple of group ones to share in this newsletter so you can see how much fun we were all having. Red Class wowed us at their Crediton Schools Music event at the Great Hall, Exeter before the holidays. They played their instruments with skill and sang beautifully. We were all very proud of you! This week the last few children from Year 5 took part in their Bikeability training. They did very well, listening carefully to the instructions and learning how to ride safely on the roads. Thank you to the CPTA for three great events last term: Bunny Bouncing, Mother’s Day Shop and the Fish and Chip Quiz night. All were well supported and very enjoyable, raising funds for the school so we can enhance the children’s curriculum and learning. The uniform samples have now been finalised and further information about this will be coming out soon in a letter. Many thanks for all the many feedback comments we had from children, parents and staff. Thank you for your on-going support, Mrs Mackey Spotlight: This week’s spotlight falls on Year 4 who had a fantastic approach to their residential trip. They showed true resilience and really challenged themselves throughout the two days. Orange Class Residential to Adventure Okehampton: On 25th April our class went on a residential to Bracken Tor in Okehampton. We stayed overnight in a house with lots of places to explore! We shared rooms together and they provided our food. Each day there were two challenges for us to complete. On the first day we had high ropes. When you first looked at it, it didn’t look scary at all, but when you actually got up there I was SO SCARED! After tea, we walked down to the Youth Hostel. There we climbed on the low ropes (which were much easier than the high ropes!) Some mini buses came to take us back to Bracken Tor, then, when they had dropped us back, we sat around the campfire and toasted marshmallows. Then it was time for bed, it was hard at first but we eventually got to sleep. By Isla W Last week on Thursday, we went on our class residential to Bracken Tor in Okehampton. We had to be there at 9.30am. When we first arrived we found our rooms and then we had a snack. We then had to do one of the worst things: making our beds. After we had made our beds we had our first activity which was team games. My favourite team game was moving the tyres because it made you think. After team games we had some lunch and time in our rooms to talk and get ready for the high ropes. The high ropes were so much fun! After high ropes we went back to the lodge and got ready for dinner which was pizza and it was so cheesy! The next morning we had breakfast at 8.00 and then went on a bike ride. I was in the fast group who went the farthest. When we got back we had lunch and did archery which I wasn’t that excited for but I did like it. Then we went home, which was my worst bit (and making my bed). By Scarlett Certificate Winners 3rd May 2 Parking at School: Thank you for respecting the ‘no parking’ zone in the old bus layby. The children are safer walking along this pavement now. We will continue to load and unload the buses by the front gate so the children are away from the road. Free Parking is available in the Sports Field Car Park or the Public Car Park towards the bottom of Bewsley Hill and we respectfully ask that parents/carers use these spaces at the busy drop-off and collection times. School Absence: Wherever possible, please notify the school office by 9.15am if your child will be absent from school. A brief description of the reason for absence is also required please. You may report any absence by calling the school office on 01363 84265; by emailing [email protected] or by using the Absence Reporting Tool on the Parentmail App for Mobile Phones. May we also remind parents/carers that children must remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode of sickness or diarrhoea. Pre-School: At Pre School we are learning about mini-beasts this half term. We are making our own mini beasts and a large caterpillar out of junk modelling and are reading lots of stories about bugs. The children have learnt that bees make honey and have enjoyed eating honey sandwiches! We have also been painting using wild flowers and have some beautiful wild flower prints on display in the Pre School. CPTA: We hope you had a fantastic Easter break. In March, 125 children visited our Mother’s Day shop raising £119 Our first Fish and Chip and Quiz night was a huge success! Over 60 people attended with 12 teams participating in the quiz! In total we raised £397.10 at this event. Thank you to everyone who helped organise this event. A total of 157 children took part in the Bunny Bounce and on average each child bounced a whooping 100 times! Together they bounced a total of 17,501 miles! We bounced all the way to Easter Island and Back again!! Once again our thanks go to Inflatafun for providing the bouncy castle and to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help run the event. Without your continued support this event wouldn’t be the success it is! Thank you to everyone who has already returned sponsorship money; please can we have any outstanding sponsorship money ASAP. Thank-you for your continued support. 3 Red Class Big Sing: In the last week of term, Year 5 joined schools from all over Mid Devon to take part in the ‘Big Sing’ at Exeter University. We arrived at the University at 1pm, ready to rehearse for the first time with a live band. Afterwards, we were lucky to be invited to an afternoon of food tasting activities hosted by Abigail and Lauren’s dad, who is Executive Chef at the University. First, children enjoyed seeing, smelling and tasting different herbs. Next, they were shown platters of exotic fruit and had to guess their name before tasting them. It was fantastic to see the children so willing to give new things a try. A HUGE thank you to Mr Narramore for organising this and arranging the extra special treat of an ice-cream! At 7pm, the children were feeling nervous as the concert began, but were excited to be performing to their parents in the audience. We thoroughly enjoyed listening and watching the other schools perform different styles of music. Then after the interval, it was our turn! The children began by playing the melody of ‘Amazing Grace’ on the steel pan drums. Accompanying them was Abigail, Leah and Lauren on the flute, alongside the University band. As the melody finished, the children stood to sing a rousing rendition of Amazing Grace. At the end of the concert, children joined a group performance of ‘Mas Que Nada’. The children sang their hearts out and really did Copplestone Primary proud. It was definitely an experience they will never forget! Year 5 would like to say a BIG thank you to Mrs Hooper who taught them the steel pan music and rehearsed their songs with them. 4 Private Fostering: Are you temporarily looking after a friend’s child while they are away? Is your child living with another family? If the answer to either question is yes, and the arrangement is for 28 days or more, this is known as private fostering. If a child or young person under 16 years old (or 18 if they have a disability) is looked after by someone who is not a close relative, then you need to tell Devon County Council. We work with the child, parents and private foster carer to ensure the best possible arrangements are in place for the child. To tell us about a private fostering arrangement or if you are unsure if your situation is private fostering, please contact 0345 155 1071 or email [email protected] Junior Bake Off: A 5th series of JUNIOR BAKE OFF is coming back and applications are now open for the Channel 4 show. They are looking for talented young bakers between 9 and 15 years old. Filming would take place from late July 2019 and applications close on Monday 6th May 2019. 5 Diary dates: May 3rd Celebration Assembly 9.15am 6th BANK HOLIDAY 8th NSPCC presentations to all children 10th Celebration Assembly 9.15am w/c 13th KS2 SATs 16th School Census Special Menu – more details to come home next week 17th Celebration Assembly 9.15am 17th Red/Purple Class CLC Netball at QE Barnfield – more details to follow 17th Copplestone Recreational Association Band Night – please see posters for information 20th Orange Class visit to Torquay Museum – more details to follow soon 22nd Forum – UNICEF Respecting Rights Award 24th Celebration Assembly 9.15am HALF TERM – Monday 27th to Friday 31st inclusive June 3rd All Pupils Return 6th QE transition meeting for parents 6pm at Copplestone Primary School 10th – 12th Year 6 Residential to Skern Lodge 11th Red Class visit to Rosemoor – more details to follow soon 11th Yellow Class Parent Lunch – more details to follow soon 13th Red/Purple Class Football competition at Haywards Primary – details to follow 14th Celebration Assembly 9.15am 14th Red/Purple Class CLC Athletics – more details to follow 19th New Reception Intake Parents Meeting 2.30 – 3.15pm 26th
