Bruyns Bolus Herbarium Department of Biological Sciences University of Cape Town Rondebosch 7701 Pretoria 2014 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, which the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) inherited from its predecessor organisa- tions. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. June 2019 Monthly Report The June monthly report makes for a lot of interesting reading with many activities taking place that kept the Rangers on their toes. The report provides the usual monthly compliance statistics including the discovery of snares, followed by a report back on the Voortrekkers annual visit, activities surround alien plant control and fuel load reduction, maintenance and some interesting wildlife highlights from the month. This report then details an alien biomass expo the Rangers attended, the very intriguing washout of a rare beaked whale and the Conservancy’s involvement therein, a conversation piece on Haworthia conservation and the release of a lesser Flamingo. The report is then concluded with the Capped Wheatear which features as this month’s monthly species profile. Plough snails enjoying their jellyfish feast. ‘If we knew how many species we’ve already eradicated, we might be more motivated to protect those that still survive. This is especially relevant to the large animals of the oceans.’ – Yuval Noah Harari 2 JUNE 2019 Compliance Management Marine Living Resources Act During June, a total of 24 recreational fishing, spearfishing and bait collecting permits were checked by Taylor, Kei and Daniel. Of the 24 permits checked, 6 people (25%) failed to produce a valid permit and were issued a verbal warning. Snares On the 3rd of June the Rangers came across some very rudimentary snares whilst checking some of the woodcutting operations on Fransmanshoek. Old packing strapping was used to create snares and were found tied to the base of bushes with a simple noose knot made at the other end. -

Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. With the aim of assessing the extent of geographical rarity of Mexican Cactaceae, we calculated the distribution size (area of occupancy) of 142 species from the Chihuahuan Desert. In addition, using 2 variables (number of localities and range size), we preliminarily assessed their conservation status using the current IUCN Red List criteria. The results showed enormous variation in the areas of occupancy, although from the biogeographic and conservation perspective the most exceptional group comprises the extremely narrow endemics (42 species), whose range is restricted to areas smaller than 10 km2. Our results reinforce the reputation of this plant family as exceptionally rare geographically. We suggest that geographical rarity of Cactaceae in the Chihuahuan Desert is a natural phenomenon; however, we propose that the range of several species has been infl uenced by human activities. Regarding the conservation status of the species, 75 of them are categorized as Least concern. The remaining 67 species (47.2%) fall in 1 of the 3 categories of threat (27 Vulnerable, 11 Endangered, and 29 Critically endangered). These fi gures confi rm the critical conservation status of Mexican Cactaceae. -

The 32 pathogen has been identified, for all the new hosts, from morphological characteristics 33 observed in vitro. The identifications have been confirmed by means of ITS (Internal 34 Transcribed Spacer) analysis and/or by Translation Elongation Factor 1α (TEF) analysis. The 35 aim of this work was to identify the forma specialis of the F. oxysporum isolates obtained 36 from new succulent plants. This has been investigated by means of phylogenetic analysis, 37 based on the Translation Elongation Factor 1α gene and intergenic spacer (IGS), carried out 38 on single-spore isolates, together with pathogenicity assays. -

Mike and I are back after a long (75 day) trip to South Africa and Madagascar. While in South Africa we had the opportunity to visit the west coast area and catch some of the last patches of Namaqualand blooms. The flowers were truly impressive, not just because of the sheer number of blooms per square meter, but also because of the diversity of colors and patterns. Many flowers have dark spots at the base of the corolla which look remarkably like small insects.
