Press Information Meet the Heroes of Le Mans Mission 2014. Our Return. Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place.

Gérard Gilles Marie Armand Larrousse was born in 1940 in Lyon, where his father ran a textile factory. “I was fascinated by motorbikes and sports cars from a young age but my family had other plans for me. For my father, cars were mainly a means of transport,” he reminisces. When he was 21 and still a student, he attended the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris and took part in his first rally in France. After completing his studies and military service, Larrousse decided in 1966 to make racing his career. “My first job was as official works driver at NSU France. After that, I drove for Automobiles Alpine for two successful years,” he says of his early days as a professional racing driver. Rallye Monte Carlo 1969: Gérard Larrousse and Claude Perramond (co-driver) finished in second place overall in a Porsche 911 S 2.0 Coupé www.porscheroadandrace.com In 1968, Gérard Larrousse almost prevented the first Porsche win at the Monte Carlo Rally. Driving a Renault Alpine 1300, he was a major threat to Porsche works driver Vic Elford who was behind the wheel of a 911 T. Only when spectators shovelled snow onto the track on a special stage did Gérard lose control of the car and have to give up.

Firstly, as the son of a car-mad dental surgeon, I used to attend many motor races in the 1950s and 60s in the then Rhodesia.

LEGENDS 2016 BMW M1 PROCAR The BMW M1 Procar Championship was a one-make car racing series, founded by Jochen Neerpasch – former head of BMW Motorsports. The Procar racing series was especially created for the BMW M1 and held in the years 1979 & 1980. The idea of this series was to give the most talented private drivers an opportunity to compete against top Formula 1 drivers under identical conditions and was staged as a warm-up race ahead of selected European Formula 1 Grand Prix. Alongside the five fastest Formula 1 drivers in the Friday training session, drivers specializing in touring cars and ambitious private drivers competed against each other – a mixture with particular appeal to the public. 24 Hours of Le Mans Grades 5-6 “Hey!” yelled Mitch. “Good luck nut job!” he shouted with a grin from the back of the pit. Mitch is my boss and coach. “Tom Kristen to the starting line please,” said the intercom. I followed instructions and bolted to my car. I was driving a TWR Porsche WSC. The car had a roar like a brave lion. I got to the starting line and I could hear the murmur of the crowd. “How you feeling?” asked Mitch on my com. “The first race can beat you up in France.” “Yeah, the terrain beats you up even more.” I replied. He laughed and said, “Voor de overwinning.” Voor de overwinning means ‘for the win’ in Dutch. Finally, the light turned red… 3...2 ... 1…. and blinked to green. “VRAAA,” roared the engine. The Porsche took off. “Remember, newbie is in last place, you’ve got to make your way up fast.” said Mitch in my ear. I swerved around a McLaren and made my way to 4th gear. All I wanted to do was make it to first in my class. There are classes for different cars, and I’m in the LMP class. I am racing for Joest Racing GmbH with two other drivers. If you win in your class you get honor, but if you beat all classes… you go down in history. Hour seven was rough. One of the other drivers from my team took over, lost six places in total, and ended up last for our class. When I took over, I tried to get ahead, but a BMW was killing me.

I had a trip planned to visit the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, to conduct another extensive photo shoot expedition. The afternoon before I was due to leave, at 15h15 to be precise, I received a call from Porsche to say, “Don’t come!” I was speechless, but managed to stutter a garbled, “What do you mean don’t come? I am leaving tomorrow morning early and I have my ferry booked and all the accommodation arranged!” The reply was, “The Stuttgart City Council has closed all public spaces, schools, restaurants and more, and there will be no-one to receive you at Porsche.” In the main exhibition hall, the visitor is greeted by the 1998 winning Porsche 911 GT1 There was nothing I could do about it, and I just had to accept the situation as it was, because Europe was at the beginning of what would become its first lockdown. The www.porscheroadandrace.com coronavirus pandemic had taken hold, and the world would not be the same again. The UK was only a matter of weeks behind Europe, and soon the whole world would be plunged into the surreal situation of being told to stay at home.
