Romain Dumas – fast in all conditions

Romain Dumas won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche in 2016. He also races in snow, ice and desert conditions, and he won the world’s most famous mountain race up Pikes Peak.

Five decades after Vic Elford, there are still some all-round drivers who are very fast on every terrain. Romain Dumas is impressive proof of this. The Frenchman won in Le Mans with Marc Lieb and Neel Jani in 2016. Together, the trio also celebrated claiming the drivers’ title in the World Endurance Championship with the Porsche 919 Hybrid. With Porsche, he has also taken first place four times at the 24 Hours Nürburgring. Dumas has been a member of the Porsche works driver team since 2004, and he was also part of the action when the Porsche RS Spyder entered by Penske’s team celebrated outstanding success in the American Le Mans Series between 2006 and 2008.

However, Dumas is not just an endurance racing specialist. He starts races wherever the opportunity arises, and he creates many of these opportunities for himself. Working together with a few friends and employees, he prepares vehicles for the race course with his team RD Limited in the south of France. For instance, he celebrated a class victory with a Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the Monte Carlo Rally in 2017, coming in 13th in the overall standings. ‘That was driving on a knife edge! We drove 13 of the 14 special stages on snow and ice,’ he noted, having crossed the finishing line.

A short time before this, he enjoyed success in a contrasting climate zone, racing a Peugeot 3008 at the Dakar Rally. To ascend the 4,301 m summit of Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, Dumas’s team built a small turbo engine, which is incorporated in a prototype. The result was overall victories in 2014 and 2016 at this US mountain race, which Walter Röhrl made famous in Europe with the Audi Sport quattro in 1987. Dumas also shares his experience with customers: his team prepares the Porsche 911 GT3 especially for rally races.
