Check it out! Hollis Primary School !2 Hollis Primary School December 4, 2020 Specialists Monthly Communication for December: Learning Commons/Technology: During November and December literacy and technology merge with lessons focusing on the history of Indigenous People that lived in our area. We begin each week reading and discussing Lynne Cherry’s book A River Ran Wild. The book takes its readers through the story of the Native Americans who first lived in this areaTec finding sustenance from the Nashua River and its surrounding forests. The author details the impact that the settlers had on the land, and during the Industrial Age in particular, on the Nashua River. Students go on to research the Abenaki and Wampanoag tribes using one of our online resources. Students add a digital sticky note describing the culture and customs of each tribe to an online white board. A compare and contrast discussion follows, with every student having contributed. During Library time we are reading a variety of books about Native American culture with first graders. They take a “tour” of the Mayflower through Scholastic News. They listen to books about life as a Native American child independently using the online library Epic. With kindergarteners we are reading fiction and nonfiction books about hibernating animals. They are being introduced to PebbleGo which is a research site we use at HPS. Students are able to explore information about all different types of animals as they become familiar with how the site works. As Library special week returns for some of our classes, everyone will be learning about holidays in different cultures through a variety of literature. Specific Technology Integration lessons during November and December range from the introduction and reinforcement of Digital Citizenship, creatively using Google Docs and Slides including inserting images and backgrounds to share information and to tell stories, and how to use a new digital resource called Kami for annotating PDF’s through Google Classroom assignments. ART: Art class is currently focusing on holidays as a theme. All of the students created holiday themed usable placemats that were inspired by the master artist Henri Matisse and his colorful paper cutouts. We looked, saw, and shared our own impressions of Matisse’s paper cutouts and designed our own placemats. We traced and cut out simple colorful round shapes for plates. We created holiday themed food by simplifying it into triangles, squares, and circles. We learned about repetition and pattern and how to create our own silverware pattern. Finally, our placemats were laminated to bring home to use for the upcoming holidays! We have also been creating our own imaginary 2D gingerbread village using cardboard or brown paper piped with white lines for imaginary icing. Grades two and three are designing houses by putting together simple shapes and adding doors, windows and detailed rooftops. We enhanced our rooftops by Hollis Primary School !3 Hollis Primary School December 4, 2020 learning how to create repetition and pattern - brick, tile, or a candy stick pattern. Finally, the kids have been adding their own details to personalize their gingerbread houses. Grades K and One have been making their own gingerbread people and some other holiday favorites. PE: Thanks to the weather, we have been outside again through November much of the time with the exception of a few indoor days. Kindergarten and 1st Grade continue to play dodging tag games and have explored different body skills as they relate to dance and outdoor gymnastics movement as well as Manipulatives related to games such hoops ,ball skills and beanbag skills individually and in partnerships. Second and Third Graders are still playing soccer and practicing their skills of passing and dribbling in small group games. Many students have demonstrated good progress at these skills. When the weather drove us indoors, we continued to participate in socially distanced dance and balloon volleyball. Math: So many quality math sites, so little time. This is one site we wish had been around when our own children were young. The site is called Bedtime Math and its purpose is to make math an enjoyable part of everyday family life. Kind of like a bedtime story, but it’s MATH. How cool is that? Here is the link if you’d like to check it out. Bedtimemath.org Environmental Science: November is the perfect time to begin talking about how our New England wildlife is adapting to our changing weather. Turns out WE as humans adapt too! We change our clothes, our activities and even our food choices ...yum, hot chocolate! Some of us even migrate! (or used to…) First grade and kindergarten students will be focused on the many ways animals adapt to survive our winters. We have lots of outdoor games and activities to play! So keep dressing warm! Second grade students are having a great time with their owl unit! Owls have some amazing adaptations and as an adorable night time predator, the owl is the perfect animal to study. Owl pellets have also been a great way to discuss food webs and make connections to our own skeletons. Third grade students have a special endeavor taking place. During a new spider unit we discovered there is NOT currently a state spider ...and as a classroom discussion evolved we decided that as a school we would like to change that! Change takes time and is hard work, but our students are up for the challenge! Any students who want to spend more time on this will be asked to join Team Spider ...it’s an ongoing and still developing plan, but we are well on our way! With the help of Kat McGhee, one of our Hollis State Representatives, we have already submitted a petition to name a state spider for New Hampshire. Stay tuned! HPS Wellness: In December we celebrate the Gift of Giving. Giving is good for the body and the mind. It’s good for those who receive, as well as those who give. Giving is just another way to communicate. It says you care and want to connect. Giving doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, the best gifts are those that come right from you! So what can you give? Reading: The Reading Team uses educational computer programs to support and reinforce reading skills and strategies at school. There are many programs available for families to support academic learning at home. Hollis Primary School !4 Hollis Primary School December 4, 2020 These sites allow students to have multiple opportunities to develop skills and solidify learning in a fun and entertaining manner.
