    The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June / July 2014, Issue #2 Farewell Sir Jack 1926 - 2014 Along with the motorsport fraternity worldwide I was extremely saddened to th hear of Sir Jack’s recent passing on the 19 May. The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure.

    1951 JAGUAR XK120 PERIOD COMPETITION ROADSTER D E T A I L S Year: 1951 Body Style: Roadster Conguration: RHD Engine: 3400 cc Price: SOLD D E S C R I P T I O N Jaguar XK120 Competition Roadster. LRW747 is an early steel bodied car originally owned by legendary Ferrari importer and race manager Col Ronnie Hoare. Constructed in August of 1951 this Jaguar was not despatched until November of that year. From records in the history le it seems that the car was extensively tested and prepared by Bob Berry, who had recently joined Jaguar at this time, and this may explain the delay between construction and delivery to Col Hoare. The car moved with Lt Col Hoare to West Germany, who was a commanding ofcer in the British Army, and remained there for the three years of his posting. Upon his return to England Ronnie Hoare retired from the Army in 1955 with the rank of full Colonel and set up a Ford dealership. Hoare had known Enzo Ferrari for a number of years and following Mike Hawthorn’s tragic death in 1959, Col Hoare took over as the principal importer of Ferrari’s, founding his Egham based Maranello Concessionaires. Not content to restrict himself to the sales and servicing business, Col Hoare successfully entered the motor racing scene, providing cars for the likes of Graham Hill, Innes Ireland, Mike Parkes, and John Surtees among others in a variety of national and international events. This sale will include 22 cars from various ages of motoring, and will have examples from Ferrari, Bentley, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, among others. Highlighting the sale are examples from four different eras of motoring: 1897 Panhard-Levassor 6hp Twin Cylinder Phaeton The Panhard-Levassor was the first ever luxury car, and the company dominated the luxury market until the arrival of Mercedes in 1901. In 1895, a Panhard-Levassor won the first ever motor race by driving from Paris to Bordeaux and back again. Unfortunately, few examples have survived – the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain records just 35. As a result, it is a rare occurrence to see such an example of motoring history at auction. This example, which is known as ‘William the Conqueror’, was delivered to a motor dealership in Paris in December 1897. It was discovered in the late 1970s in northern France, and was brought to the UK where it underwent a comprehensive restoration. The car carries an estimate of £100,000-150,000. 1923 Bentley 3 Litre Drophead Coupé by Park Ward This immaculate vintage Bentley was delivered new to Alfred Dunhill in December 1923. Dunhill is most famous for founding the company which carries his name, and which aimed to supply ‘everything but the motor’ in its motor accessories range.
