Men's Hall No. 7 Since its founding in 1922 as a state-assisted institution, Morehead State University has developed through the years to stand today as a dynamic, multi-purpose university situated on a beautiful 500-acre campus where the Bluegrass meets Appalachia in the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Under the farsighted and energetic leadership of Dr. Adron Doran, the school's seventh chief executive, Morehead State University has grown from a tiny state college to an expanding university reaching out to serve Kentucky and the nation. From 698 students at the time of Dr. Doran's inauguration in 1954, the enrollment has increased almost 900 per cent to more than 6,000. Physically, the university consists of more than 50 major structures on the campus proper with a total value of more than $60 million. Additionally, a 212- acre experimental farm is being developed six miles north of Morehead in rural Rowan County. Almost all of the major construction has occurred since Dr. Doran became president. Recently occupied were a 19-story, 512-bed residence tower for men, a IO-story, 400-bed residence hall for women, a $2.8 million renovation and expansion of the Adron Doran University Center and a $1.8 million modernization of Rader Hall, home of the School of Social Sciences. 3

The Rader project transformed the oldest campus structure into an ultra-modern classroom and office building. Construction is underway now on a $3.5 million technical institute. Academically, the university is composed of six schools-Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Applied Sciences and Technology, Education, Humani ties, and Sciences and Mathematics. Undergraduate, graduate and associate degrees are offered and addi tional credit may be earned beyond the master's degree. The faculty numbers more than 350 and and about 12,300 persons are MSU alumni. Administratively, the university operates under a nine-member Board of Regents with six members appointed by the governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The state superintendent of public instruc tion serves as ex-officio chairman of the board. The other two seats are held by non-voting representatives of the faculty and student body. The administrative structure consists of five bureaus- academic affairs, research and development, university affairs, student affairs and fiscal affairs. Each is headed by a vice president. Athletically, the university is a member in good standing of the National Collegiate Athletic Asso ciation (NCAA) and the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Intercollegiate competition involves 10 sports football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, swimming, track, cross country and wrestling.

Mignon Complex 4 THE ADMINISTRATORS ...

DR. ADRON DORAN

A lifetime of service to Kentucky was recognized last spring in New York City when Dr. Adron Doran received the Horatio Alger Award. The 17 year president of Morehead State University joined a select group of about 200 Americans chosen as recipients since the awards began 25 years ago. Dr. Doran, a native of Graves County, Ky., became the fourth Kentuckian so honored and the only educator listed in 1971.

Horatio Alger Awards are sponsored by the Ameri can Schools and Colleges Association, a non-profit corporation committed to education and American traditions of equality of opportunity, industry and achievement. The awards were created to honor business and professional leaders who, in the spirit of Horatio Alger, have overcome humble circumstances to attain unquestioned success. Dr. Doran has risen from a two-room farmhouse in Western Kentucky to national prominence as a college administrator. His administration has led MSU to more than 30 precedents in dealing with ethnic minority groups. He received the Lincoln Key of the Kentucky Education Association for "integration without fanfare." 5

From a tiny teachers college little known outside the state, MSU has won recognition for its service to Eastern Kentucky, Appalachia and the nation. Enroll ment has increased almost 900 per cent since 1954 to more than 6,000, and upwards of $60 million has been expended in campus construction. Before assuming the MSU presidency in 1954, the educator served Kentucky in the public schools as a coach, teacher and principal, in the Kentucky General Assembly, including a term as Speaker of the House and in the Kentucky Department of Education. He holds an earned doctorate from the University of Kentucky and honorary doctorates from three other institutions. The Kentucky Press Association named him "Ken tuckian of the Year" in 1959 and Gov. Edward T. Breathitt selected him for the "Distinguished Ken tuckian Award" in 1966. MSU's seventh president is married to his college sweetheart, the former Mignon McClain of Sedalia, Ky. She is a past president of the Kentucky Federation of Women's Clubs.

ROBERT G. LAUGHLIN, Director of Athletics Now in his seventh year as full-time athletic direc tor, former head basketball coach Bobby Laughlin has had a colorful career in sports. In 12 years as Eagle cage mentor, he guided MSU to a 166-120 record, record, three trips to the NCAA Tournament a,nd four Ohio Valley Confer erence basketball titles. He was named OVC "coach of the year" in 1961. Laughlin came to Morehead in 1935 as basketball coach at Breckinridge Training School, now University Breckinridge. He guided Breck to the Kentucky high school crown in 1946 and became MSU's head basketball coach and athletic director in 1953. The Mt. Sterling, Ky. native retired from active coaching in 1965 to devote full time to the university's expanding athletic program which involves 10 sports. "Coach" Laughlin, as he is still called, also is a full professor of health, physical education and recreation. He is a graduate of MSU and the Univer sity of Kentucky. 6

THE COACHES ...

JAKE HALLUM, Head Coach

Eagle Head Coach Jake Hallum received the ulti mate compliment late last season. MSU was preparing for the last game of the year when Eastern Kentucky Coach Roy Kidd told a sports writer: "Up there at Morehead Jake Hallum is teaching them to hate- but in a Christian way." This combination of fierce competitive spirit and strong religious conviction is the driving force behind the 33-year-old Hallum, whose soft-spoken manner and boundless enthusiasm have made him a favorite with friend and foe alike. Hard hitting, team effort football is the name of the game to Jake Hallum, and his players have been recognized as well drilled, finely-conditioned athletes. Last year's squad turned in a winning record (6-4) with a season-ending win over regional rival Eastern Kentucky and Jake Hallum had a winning record ( 15-14-1) after three seasons. His 1968 team was 3-6-1 and the 1969 squad also finished 6-4. A South Carolina native who played linebacker, defensive guard and defensive end at Newberry Col lege, Hallum took the MSU football reins in early 1968 after a short but successful career as a high school head coach. He was named Kentucky's "High School Coach of the Year" in 1967 after leading Ashland Paul Blazer to the state cha.-npionship with an 11 -1 mark. The 1966 Ashland squad was 7-5 in Jake's first year as head coach. Before Ashland, Hallum was an assistant coach at Pickens, S.C. and Hopkinsville, Kentucky under Fleming Thornton, one of the nation's most success ful high school coaches. Jake is married to the former Mabel Duvall of Greenwood, S.C. They have two sons. 8

8 el11ing Marmie Walker JOHN BEHLING, Offensive Line Another ace recruiter on the Eagle staff, Coach Behling is beginning his fourth year as the man respon sible for finding operating space for the offense. A collegiate standout at and end for Otterbein College, the Columbus, Ohio, native came to MSU after a sparkling high school coaching career in Ohio, including Sandusky, Massillon and Fremont Ross. Behling is active in various youth activities on campus and is one of the athletic department's most popular members. He is married to the former Betty Bonnette of Columbus. They have three children. The personable Behling holds a master's degree from Kent State. LARRY MARMIE, Defensive Line After three years of handling the secondary, the likable Marrnie moved to the defensive line this sum mer. A native of Barnesville, Ohio, Marrnie was a four-year starting quarterback at Eastern Kentucky University and is considered one of the best signal callers in EKU history. A skilled recruiter and defen sive strategist, he came to MSU in 1968 from Berea High School where his high school teams finished 11-8-1 for two seasons. Marmie is married to the former Linda Cline of Barnesville. They have three children. He has a master's degree from EKU. DAN WALKER, Offensive Backfield Coach Walker, known to his friends as "Dude," doubles as MSU's head wrestling coach. Equally pro ficient with a guitar and a football, he is the morale man on the Eagle staff. His responsibility for develop ing a ground and air attack is a natural outgrowth of his own career as a quarterback at Louisville where he lettered four times. Walker came to MSU in 1968 after six years as football and wrestling coach at North Hardin High School. He was Kentucky's "wrestling coach of the year" in 1967. The exuberant Walker is married to the former Connie Sullivan of Vine Grove. They have two children. He has a master's degree from Morehead State. 9

Gottfried Mullins Baldridge MIKE GOTTFRIED, Defensive Backfield The 1971 football season will be a homecoming for Coach Gottfried who left MSU in 1965 after four years as the Eagles' regular quarterback. The Crest line, Ohio, native proved himself to be a superb high school coach with a 38-2 mark in four seasons at Norwalk St. Paul. He was named Ohio's Class A Coach of the Year in 1969 when the Flyers won the state crown. A gifted passer in college, Gottfried brings a perfect background to the coaching of pass defense. He is married to the former Michaelene Rosandic of Crestline. They have one child. Gottfried holds a master's degree from his alma mater.

RAY MULLINS, Head Trainer R. G. (Ray) Mullins, a native of Hazard, came to MSU in 1970 to be head athletic trainer in all 10 sports. Previously, he had four years as an assistant trainer at Tennessee Tech. As head trainer, he is responsible for the physical health of all MSU ath letes. In addition to supervising pre-game and post game training procedures, the 23-year-old Mullins also conducts various therapy programs for injured players. He is a graduate of Tennessee Tech and is pursuing a master's degree at MSU.

LARRY BALDRIDGE, Graduate Assistant A standout defensive back in his last two seasons at MSU, "Baldy" established new school records for season and career pass interceptions and was a first team All-OVC selection. He has returned to MSU foot ball as a graduate assistant assigned to scouting and helping coach the linebackers. The Shelby, Ohio, product is the second Baldridge brother to star as an Eagle. He is married to the former Pamela Wilson of Ripley, Ohio. They have one child. 10 THE OUTLOOK ...

Dashing Dave Schaetzke (10) shows why he is probably the OVC's best quarterback this season.

HALLUM NEEDS BEEF, PASS DEFENDERS Morehead State University Head Football Coach Jake Hallum is cautiously optimistic about the 1971 season, his fourth at MSU, because of 36 returning lettermen. But he also must replace six regulars out of the nine departed Eagles. "With 15 seniors, this is the most experienced group we've ever had but it's not going to be easy replacing key men in the secondary and offensive line," the 33-year-old Hallum said. His Eagles were 6-4 in 1970. The offense, tops in the Ohio Valley Conference last year with 289 yards a game, will be without three All-OVC performers - tackle Ed Mignery, tailback Louis Rogan and center Steve Ward. However, MSU has one of the nation's best young in sophomore Dave Schaetzke, All-OVC last year as a freshman with 1,440 yards of total offense- 975 passing and 465 rushing. Behind him are promising sophomores Alex Brawner and Lou Mains. 11

Also returning are All-OVC tight end Gary Shirk, All-OVC split end John High and veteran running backs Bill Cason, Doug Moore and John Coning. Back for line duty are tackle John Slaughter, guard Tom Lehman and center Mike Hawkins. Mo Hollings worth, Dennis Crowley and Jeff Perkins give depth at wingback. The defense, second tightest in the league in 1970, has nine starters reappearing but lost All-OVC secondarymen Ron Gathright and Larry Baldridge plus Clint Walker, a part-time starter at end. All-OVC linebacker Harry (Sugar Bear) Lyles, an All-America candidate, again sparks a seasoned unit which includes ends Jerome Howard, Jim Edwards and John Lemke, tackles Ray Mulroy and Mark Sheehan and linebackers Charlie Arline and Ron Little. Mike Rucker, Ken Hass and Jim Bayes are the best of the defensive backs. The fourth spot is up for grabs.

THE FRESHMEN ... Eleven Kentucky high school standouts dominated last spring's football recruiting effort at MSU. Head Coach Jake Hallum and his staff also signed five players from Ohio and one from West Virginia. The 19 recruits consist of nine linemen, two running backs, four linebackers, a punter and three defensive backs. "We're very pleased with this year's crop of future Eagles," Hallum said. "Several of them will-see action as freshmen. They're not big in numbers but it cer tainly is a quality group."

1971 OUTLOOK Head Coach Jack Lengyel faces a staggering task in rebuilding the MU football fortunes. Last year's squad was virtually wiped out in that tragic air crash which took the lives of 37 players. Only eight varsity players with any experience are returning but the new coaching staff has the products of a fair freshman team and the NCAA has given Marshall permission to use freshmen in varsity competition for the next two seasons. Two proven standouts, defensive back Nate Ruffin and offensive tackle Ed Carter, were not on the ill-fated plane and will lead the Young Thundering Herd in 1971. 33

If there is a sore spot on the team, it is at quarterback where sophomore Dean Rodenbeck and converted Mel Daniels are expected to vie for the job. All-OVC junior tailback Reuben Justice heads the ground attack corps. MTSU also has three All-OVC linemen and two All-OVC defensive backs returning. "We finally have enough depth at most positions that injuries won't just kill us as they have in the past," Peck said this spring. "We could have a pretty goocl. year." 34

1971 OUTLOOK The Racers return most of their defensive unit but some major holes will have to be filled on offense. Returning standouts on defense include All-OVC tackle Dave Ford, All-OVC end Glen Fausey and All-OVC linebacker Frank Head. Defense was the strongest factor in Murray's game last season, and it should be even tougher this year. The offensive unit lost most of its line and passing attack but will return part-time starting quarterback Garnett Scott and fullback Rick Fisher. Several good sophomore prospects, headed by tailback Stan Fritts, will be available. With 17 seniors, the Racers should not suffer from lack of experience. ,....,, 35

1971 OUTLOOK Coach "Deacon" Duvall switched to a split-T, pro set offense last spring in hopes of utilizing his quick running backs, namely Rick Kaller, Andy Sedlock, Ted Jackson, and Bill Haddox. Sophomore Harold Bailey inherits the quarterback spot. Split end Mike Argabrite, also a defensive standout, and tight end Bill Swope are the best receivers. Senior guard Gary Crutchfield is a top offensive lineman. The defensive forward wall boasts end Scott Nease, middle guard Paul Deahl and tackles Bob Smith and Lambert Tsuhlares. EAGLES LOOKING FOR CHIMES "Ringing a chime" is a phrase familiar to all foot ball fans. It signifies a sharp tackle or "hit" as some coaches like to say. In keeping with such phraseology, the MSU defen sive coaches have renamed their unit the "Bellringers" this year because of rugged play last season. Nine of the 11 starters in 1970 are returning for Coaches Larry Marmie, Mike Gottfried and Larry Baldridge. Last year's aggregation was the second most effective defensive unit in the OVC, allowing an average of 1 74.8 yards per game. The rushing defense surrendered a meager 82. 7 yards per outing and the pass defenders permitted only 92.1 yards a game. "We're encouraging our fans to greet the defense with bells because these guys are out to be the toughest unit in the league," Coach Marmie said. "They plan to ring several chimes themselves during the season." Back for another campaign are starting tackles Mark Sheehan and Ray Mulroy, ends John Lemke and Jerome Howard, linebackers Harry Lyles, Ron Little, Charlie Arline, cornerback Mike Rucker and strong safety Ken Hass. Other vets are linebacker-end Jim Edwards and converted cornerback Jim Bayes. 45 THE RECORD BOOK ...

The idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference was originated in 1941 but could not be implemented until after World War II. In 1948 five schools - More head State, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State, and Louisville - withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference·(KIAC) and were joined by Evansville in forming the original membership of the OVC. They were joined shortly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and Marshall. The membership has changed over the years. Middle Tennessee joined the league in 1952, East Tennessee in 1957 and Austin Peay in 1962. Louis ville became an independent in 1949 and Marshall and Evansville departed in 1952. In 1955 the National Collegiate Athletic Asso ciation formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball conference, giving the league's champion an automatic bid to the post-season NCAA Tourna ment. At the time, the OVC was only the second six-team conference to obtain major status from the NCAA. For many years the OVC has been represented in the nation's top holiday and post-season basketball tournaments. The league has also won recognition for its football program, having had representatives in such post-season classics for college division teams as the Refrigerator Bowl, the Tangerine Bowl and the Grantland Rice Bowl. OVC champions have also been prominent in national minor sports tournaments in recent years, evidencing the strength of its programs in baseball, track, golf, tennis and cross country. Perhaps the ideals and purposes of the league are best expressed in one sentence of the OVC Code of Ethics, formulated in 1960: "Member institutions of the Ohio Valley Con ference regard the athletic program as a part of the educational process.'' 53 THE 1970
