Midler won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role. Bette Midler's Early Life Was Born Honolulu, where her family was one of the few Jewish families in the predominantly Asian neighborhood. Her mother, Ruth (Shindel), was a seamstress and housewife, and her father, Fred Midler, worked at a naval base in Hawaii as an artist and was also a housewife. Both parents were born in New Jersey. It was named after actress Bette Davis, although Davis uttered her name in two syllables, while Midler uses one. She grew up in Ayea and attended Radford High School in Honolulu. She was voted The Most Talkative in the 1961 school elections and The Most Dramatic in the graduating class (class 1963). Midler majored in drama at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, but left after three semesters. She earned money in the 1966 film Hawaii as an extra, playing an unregistered marine passenger named Miss David Buff. Career 1965-1971: Midler moved to in the summer of 1965, using money from his work in the film Hawaii. She studied theater at STUDIO HB under the direction of Tta Hagen. She landed her first professional role on stage in Tom Eyen's Off-Off-Broadway plays in 1965, Miss Nefertiti Regrets and Cinderella Revisited, a children's play by day and adult show night. From 1966 to 1969, she played the role of Ceytel in the film Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway. After Fiddler, she joined the original cast of Salvation in 1969. In the summer of 1970, she began singing at Continental Baths, a gay bath at the Ansonia Hotel. During this time, she became close to her accompanist Barry Manilow, who produced her first album in 1972, . In the late 1990s, during the release of her album, Midler commented on her performance there: Despite the way things turned out to be an AIDS crisis, I'm still happy with those days. I feel like I've been at the forefront of the gay liberation movement and I hope I've done my part to help it move forward. So, I kind of wear the Bathouse label Betty with pride. Midler starred in the first professional production of the 1971 rock opera Tommy with director Richard Pearlman and the Opera. It was during Tommy's launch that Midler first appeared on The Tonight Show. 1972-1980: Divine Miss M and Midler's success with Dustin Hoffman on Bette Midler TV Special (1977) Midler released her debut album, Divine Miss M, on in December 1972. The co-producer of the album was Barry Manilow, who at the time was Bette's arranger and musical conductor. It reached the Top 10 of Billboard and became a million-dollar platinum album, earning Midler the 1973 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. It had three hits: Do You Want to Dance?, Friends and Boogie Bugle Boy - the third of which was Midler's first hit No. 1 Adult Contemporary. Bugle Boy was a successful rock cover of the classic swing tune originally introduced and popularized in 1941 by the Andrews sisters, whom Midler repeatedly called her idols and inspiration, in his first appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the title role. Midler told Carson in an interview that she always wanted to move like sisters, and Patty Andrews remembered: When I first heard the introduction on the radio, I thought it was our old record. When Bette opened up at the Amphitheater in Los Angeles, Maxen and I went backstage with her. Her first words were: What else do you write down? During another concert Midlera Maxen came on stage and gave her an honorary bug. Bette recorded other Andrews Sisters hits, including In the Mood and Lullaby of Broadway. Midler, at the premiere of her debut feature film, The Rose, in 1979, released her self-titled album in late 1973. Again, the album was co-produced by Manilow. It reached the Top 10 of Billboard and eventually sold about a million copies in the United States alone. Midler returned to recording with albums from 1976 and 1977, Songs for the New Depression and . In 1974, she won a special Tony Award for her contribution to Broadway, with the Clams on Half Shell Revue, playing at the Minskoff Theatre. From 1975 to 1978, she also provided the voice of Woody Spoon on the PBS educational series Vegetable Soup. In 1977, Midler's first television special, the title of which, Ol' Red Hair Is Back, was taking off at Frank Sinatra's Ol' Blue Eyes Back, a premiere featuring guest stars Dustin Hoffman and Emmett Kelly. He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special - Comedy-Variety or Music. 1981, in Amsterdam promoting the film Divine Madness (1980) Midler made his first film in 1979, starring in the 1960s-era rock 'n' roll tragedy Rose as a drug-addicted rock star modeled on Janis Joplin. In the same year she released her fifth studio album . Midler's first foray into was a commercial and critical failure and continued to be her lowest album on the chart, peaking at number 65 on the Billboard album chart. Soon after, she began a world concert tour, with one of her shows in Pasadena, shot and released as a concert film Divine Madness (1980). Her performance in Rose earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress (comedy or musical). The famous soundtrack for the film has sold more than two million copies in the United States alone, receiving a Double Platinum certificate. The single version of the title song written and composed by Amanda McBroom, 1 spot on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for five consecutive weeks and peaked at number three on the Billboard's Hot 100. She won Midler her first gold single and won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. 1981-1989: The Wind Under My Wings, Beaches and Midler's Return worked on the troubled comedy project Jinxed! in 1981. However, during the production, there was friction with co-star Ken Wahl and the film's director, Don Siegel. Released in 1982, the film was a major failure. Midler did not appear in any other film until 1986; however, she was an early choice for Miss Hannigan in the 1982 film Annie. During these four years she focused on her music career and in 1983 released the album No Frills, produced by Chuck Plotkin, who was best known for his work with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. The album included three singles: the ballad All I Need to Know, the cover cover of Detroit-born Marshall Crenshaw's You're My Favorite Waste of Time, which Midler fell in love with after turning his 45th Someday Someway (quote) - and taking Midler to the Rolling Stones' Beast of Burden. She also released an all-comedy album (with several songs related in the comedy) called Dirt Will Flung Tonight in 1985. Midler performed in the United States for the 1985 African single and participated in the Live Aid event at JFK Stadium in . In addition, in 1985, she signed with Walt Disney Studios, where she starred in a series of successful films produced by the newly created division of Touchstone Pictures. She also produced them through her production banner, All Girl Productions with producer partner Bonnie Bruckheimer. She was subsequently cast by director Paul Mazurski in the down-and-coming films in Beverly Hills, launching a successful comedy acting career. She followed this role with several comedies Touchstone, Ruthless People (1986), Outrageous Fortune (1987) and Big Business (1988). Later, in 1988, Midler lent her voice to the animated character Georgette, a snobbish poodle, in Disney's Oliver and Company, and had a hit with tearjerker Beaches, starring . The accompanying soundtrack remains Midler's best-selling album, reaching No. 2 on Billboard and selling four million copies in the United States. She showed off her biggest hit, Wind Beneath My Wings, which peaked at number one on the Billboard's Hot 100, platinum and earned Midler her third Grammy Award for Record of the Year on the 1990 TV show. 1990-1999: Some people's lives, further acting careers and TV appearances by Midler in Los Angeles, 1990 Midler's 1990 cover of Julie Gold's From a Distance, the first с ею седьмого студийного альбома Some People's Lives (1990), возглавил Billboard Billboard Billboard Modern charts and received platinum status in the United States. In the same year she starred alongside Trini Alvarado as the main character in the drama john Erman Stella. The third feature film adaptation of Stella 's novel Olive Higgins Prouty, Midler portrayed a vulgar single mother living in Watertown, New York, who, determined to give her daughter every opportunity she never had, ultimately makes a selfless sacrifice to ensure her happiness. The film received mediocre reviews, while Midler received her first nomination for the Razzie Award for Worst Actress. She starred alongside Woody Allen in the 1991 film Scenes from the Mall, again for Paul Mazursky. In the film, Allen's character shows his author wife, Deborah, played by Midler, after years of a happy marriage that he had an affair, prompting her to ask for a divorce. The film performed poorly, and received mixed reception from critics. Midler did a little better with another 1991 project, For the Boys, on which she re-charged with The Rose director Mark Rydell. A historical musical drama, it tells the story of 1940s actress and singer Dixie Leonard, played by Midler, who teams up with Eddie Sparks, a famous performer to entertain American troops. While the film received mixed reception from critics, Midler earned rave reviews for her portrayal. The following year, she won her second Golden Globe and received a second Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Midler relinquished his starring role in the 1992 musical comedy The Sister Act, which was instead won by Whoopi Goldberg. Midler won an Emmy Award in 1992 for her performance in the penultimate episode of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson in May 1992, during which she sang Johnny Carson's One for My Baby (and One More for the Road). That night, Midler began singing Here's That Rainy Day, Carson's favorite song; Carson joined several texts later. In 1993, she starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Katie Najimi in Walt Disney's comedy fantasy film Hokus Pocus as Vinifred Sanderson, the main witch of the Sanderson sisters. Released at initially mixed reviews, through various outlets such as strong DVD sales and annual record screenings on 13 Halloween nights, the film has achieved cult status over the years. In reference to Hocus Pocus, Midler holds his annual Hulaween costume party each year, which benefits the New York Restoration Project. Other work includes an Emmy-nominated version of the musical Gypsy and an appearance as a guest in Fran Drescher's Nanny. She appeared on 's 1995 episode of The Understudy, which was the finale the show's sixth season in 1995. In the same year, Midler played a supporting role in Get Shorty. Her 1997 HBO HBO The Las Vegas diva won her third Emmy Award for Excellence in Variety or Music. (quote necessary) Other Midler films of the 1990s include The First Wives Club (1996). In 1997, Midler, along with her first Wives Club stars, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award, which is awarded to outstanding women who, through their endurance and excellence in their work, have helped to expand the role of women in the entertainment industry. In 1998, Midler released her ninth studio album, Bathhouse Betty, named after the nickname she received for performing in the baths early in her career. In 1999, she appeared in an episode of the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown and was featured in the animated musical film Fantasy 2000. 2000-2005: Bette comedy, tribute albums, and The Tour Midler starred in her own comedy in 2000, Bette, who revealed Midler plays herself, a divine celebrity who adores her fans. Airing on CBS, initial ratings were high, marking the best comedy debut for the network in more than five years, but the percentage of viewers soon declined, resulting in the cancellation of the show in early 2001. Midler spoke openly about the show's demanding filming schedule, while the show itself was reportedly also rocked by behind-the-scenes turmoil over the replacement of co-star Kevin Dunn, whose departure was attributed to his behind-the-scenes altercation with Midler by the media. However, Midler was praised for her award for her participation in the show and received a Golden Globe nomination the following year. Also in 2000, Midler made an unnamed cameo appearance in Nancy Meyers's fantasy rom-com What Women Want, starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. In the film, she portrays a therapist who realizes that the central character Nick, played by Gibson, is able to understand the thoughts of women. Released in general with mixed reviews, it became the most successful film ever made by a woman, with $183 million in the U.S. and a box office of more than $370 million worldwide. In the same year, Midler starred in the films Isn't She Great and Drowning Mona. In Andrew Bergman's Isn't She Great, a highly fictional account of the life and career of writer Jacqueline Suzanne, she played alongside Nathan Lane and Stockard Channing, portraying Suzanne with her early struggles as an aspiring actress, relentlessly hungry for fame, her relationship with press agent Irving Mansfield, her success as the author of The Valley of the Dolls and her success with the breast-cancer. The drama received mostly negative reviews from critics, who dismissed it as soft material that produces completely forgetful comic performances. For her work in the film Midler received a second Nominated for worst female role at the 21st ceremony. In Nick Gomez's dark comedy The Drowned Mona, Midler appeared alongside Danny DeVito and Jamie Lee Curtis, playing the title character Mona Diarley, an angry, loudly oral, violent and highly unpopular woman whose mysterious death is being investigated. In another critical fiasco, reviewers noted that the film is drowned in humor that never rises above the level of comedy. After nearly three decades of erratic record sales, Midler was expelled from Warner Music Group in 2001. After a reported long-running feud with Barry Manilow, they joined forces after years in 2003 to record Bette Midler singing a song by Rosemary Clooney. Now signed to Columbia Records, the album was an instant success, being certified gold by the RIAA. One of Clooney's Songbook choices, This Ole House, became midler's first Christian radio single supplied by Rick Hendricks and his positive music movement. The album was nominated for a Grammy the following year. In 2003 and 2004, Midler toured the United States in her new show Kiss My Brass to sell to an audience. She also appeared in the supporting role in Frank Oz's sci-fi satire Stepford Wife, a remake of the 1975 film of the same name, also based on the novel by Ira Levin. Also starring Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken and Glenn Close, Midler played Bobby Markowitz, a writer and recovering alcoholic. The project has gone through numerous production problems that have taken place throughout its filming schedule, with reports of problems on set between director Oz and the cast rampant in the press. Oz later blamed Midler - who was on the background recording her next album and rehearsing for her tour - for being under a lot of stress from other projects and making the mistake of bringing her stress on set. While the original book and film had a huge cultural impact, the remake was marked by poor reviews from many critics and financial losses of about $40 million at the box office. Midler reunited with Manilow for another tribute album, Bette Midler, singing Peggy Lee's song. Released in October 2005, the album sold 55,000 copies in its first week of release, returned Midler to the top ten of the U.S. Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2006-2011, , , Jackpot: The Best Bette and Memories of You Midler released a new Christmas album called Cool Yule in 2006, featuring the Christmas pop duo Winter Wonderland /Let It Snow with Johnny Mathis. The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in 2007. In the same year Midler returned to the big screen, appearing in Then She Found directorial debut by Helen Hunt. Also starring Hunt along with Broderick and Colin Firth, a comedy-drama film tells the story of a 39-year-old Brooklyn elementary school teacher who years later got in touch with a flamboyant host of a local talk show, played by Midler, who presents herself as her biological mother. The critical reaction to the film was mixed; while some critics praised the film for its strong performances, others felt that the film was bogged down in weak scripts and technical problems. Midler's 2010 HRC Annual Dinner Midler debuted her Vegas show called Bette Midler: Showgirl Must Go to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on February 20, 2008. It includes The Staggering Harlettes, 20 dancers called The Caesar Salad Girls and a group of 13 people. The show played its last performance on January 31, 2010 and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2011 for outstanding performances in the field of variety, music or comedy. Also in 2008, another Midler compilation album, Jackpot: The Best Bette, was released. It peaked at number 66 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number six in the UK, where it went platinum for sales of more than 300,000 copies. As her only film appearance this year, Midler played a small role in Diana English's comedy film The Women, starring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Eva Mendes. An updated version of George Cucor's 1939 film of the same name, based on Claire Booth's 1936 play Luce, the film was widely panned by critics who found it ... A toothless remake of the 1939 classic, lacking the charm, wit and compelling heroes of the original. Midler appeared on the TV show Bravo My Life on the D-list with Kathy Griffin in an episode that aired in June 2009. In December of that year, she appeared at the Royal Variety Show, an annual British charity event attended by queen Elizabeth II. Midler performed and Wind Beneath My Wings as the final act. The film was successful, grossing $112 million worldwide. In November 2010, Midler released Memories of You, another compilation of lesser-known tracks from her catalog. Midler was one of the producers of the Broadway production of the musical Priscilla, the queen of the desert, which opened in February 2011. 2012-present: I'll eat you one last time: Chat with Sue Mengers, It's Girls!, And Hello, Dolly! Midler (dressed as her character Winnifred Sanderson of Hocus Pocus) performed on her Divine Intervention tour in 2015. In the same year she starred alongside Billy Crystal in the family film Parent (2012), playing a couple of old-school grandparents trying to adjust to their daughter's 21st century parenting style. Despite generally negative reviews from critics who considered the film sweet but milkketoast, the film's box office was higher than originally expected. In 2013, Midler performed on Broadway for the first time in more than 30 years in a play about Hollywood superagent Sue Mengers. The play, titled I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers and dramatized by John Logan, opened on April 24, 2013 at the Booth Theatre. After the success of the show in New York, having recouped its initial investment of $2.4 million, it was decided to perform in Los Angeles at the Geffen Playhouse. In December, it was announced that Midler would portray actress Mae West in a biopic about the HBO film, written by Harvey Fleurstein and directed by William Friedkin. In March 2014, she performed at the 86th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and sang Wind Beneath My Wings during the Memory section. In November 2014, Midler released her 25th overall album, It's the Girls!, through Warner Bros. Records. The album spans seven decades of famous girl bands, from the 1930s trio The Boswell Sisters and The Andrews Sisters to 1990s RBC legends such as TLC and their single Waterfalls. In March 2017, she began playing the role of Dolly Gallagher Levy, continuing until January 2018, in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! for which she won her second Tony Award. In 2017, she also starred as Muv in the 2017 film Freak Show. On April 20, 2018, it was announced that Midler would return to Hello, Dolly! July 17 to close the run of a successful revival. Midler performed The Place Where Lost Things Go by Mary Poppins Returns at the 91st Annual Academy Awards on February 24, 2019. In 2020, Midler starred in the biopic Glorias, which revolves around the life of Gloria Steinem as Bella Abzug, directed by Julie Taymor. She also starred in the second season of The Politician after previously being guest in the title role. Midler has written several books, including The Saga of the Divine Baby, The View From Broad, Bette Midler's Greatest Hits: Try the Divine, The Wind Under My Wings. In 2020, she published a children's book called The Tale of the Mandarin Duck, based on the story of a rare duck spotted in Central Park in 2018. She played Miriam Nessler, a retired teacher from New York, in HBO's Paul Rudnick's Coastal Elite. Midler married the artist Martin von Haselberg on December 16, 1984. Their daughter, actress Sophie von Haselberg, was born on November 14, 1986. Charity work In 1991 Midler was one of the first sponsors of Adopt-a-Highway, paying $2,000 a month for the team to clear 2 miles section of the Ventura Freeway in Burbank, California. Signs at both ends of the section read: Garbage Removal Next 2 Miles, Bette Midler. The location was so noticeable that it became fodder for her performance in a 1993 episode of The Simpsons Krusty Gets Kancelled, where she was seen collecting debris along a stretch of highway she had taken and causing car crashes for drivers who deliberately littered. In 1995, she brought the same idea to the East Coast, taking a stretch of the Long Island Expressway and the Bronx River Parkway. Midler founded the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) in 1995, a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing abandoned neighborhood parks in economically disadvantaged areas of New York City. These include Highbridge Park, Fort Washington Park and Fort Trion Park in upper Manhattan and Roberto Clemente State Park and Bridge Park in the Bronx. When the city planned to auction 114 public gardens for commercial development in 1991, Midler led a coalition of green organizations to save them. NYRP has claimed responsibility for the 60 most derelict sites. Today, Midler and her organization are working with local volunteers and community groups to ensure the safety, cleanliness and energy of these gardens. In 2003, Midler opened Swindler Cove Park, a new 5-acre (20,000-square-foot) public park on the banks of the Harlem River with specially designed schools and the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse, the first public rowing facility built on the Harlem River in more than 100 years. The organization offers free school and after-school environmental education programming for students from high-poverty schools Title I. In 2001, after September 11, 2001, it created programs run by its foundation that help wounded servicemen and their families by providing them with resources, including custom homes. One of these programs helps service members recover from injuries, injuries and casualties. In addition, since the first Gulf War it has been going to THE USO and bases to show their gratitude to the servicemen by serving their meals shortly before deployment.
