Burnaby Mountain Gondola Transit Project Success in Integrating Sustainable Transportation and Land Use Prepared by: Ian Fisher, Senior Transportation Planner, TransLink Robert Rollin, Senior Project Manager, CH2M HILL Paper prepared for presentation at the Success in Integrating Sustainable Transportation and Land Use Session of the 2011 Annual Conference of the Transportation Association of Canada, Edmonton, Canada Burnaby Mountain Gondola Transit Project Success in Integrating Sustainable Transportation and Land Use Abstract TransLink, with the support of the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and P3 Canada, is reviewing the potential for a high-capacity gondola connecting Burnaby Mountain to the nearest SkyTrain rapid transit station. The mountain accounts for 25,000 daily transit passenger trips and is home to the main campus of Simon Fraser University, with 18,200 students, growing to 25,000 in future, and the UniverCity sustainable community, with residents increasing from 3,000 to 10,000. While the mountain is only 2.7 kilometres from the nearest SkyTrain station, it is almost 300 metres higher in elevation. Approximately 45 diesel buses arrive on the mountain in the peak hour but pass-ups are common and the service is often disrupted in winter weather. An initial study indicated that a high-capacity gondola could replace most of the bus service, with bus cost savings covering the gondola operating cost and a portion of capital. Additionally, a gondola has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase reliability, and cut travel times by one-third, attracting more riders to transit. The costs and benefits, and potential delivery models, are being reviewed in a Business Case completed in summer 2011. -

Lesson plans including discussions for looking at primary sources, curriculum connections and lesson plans for a variety of ages and abilities. Detailed listing of vocabulary and concepts. Suggested sources for further research and other information. 2 HISTORY OF GLENBOW MUSEUM Glenbow Museum began with the remarkable vision of petroleum entrepreneur and lawyer Eric Lafferty Harvie. Mr. Harvie came into his fortune when oil was discovered in 1949 on land near Leduc and Redwater, for which he held the mineral rights. With this prosperity, he decided to pursue his favourite passion — collecting — and simultaneously return some of his good fortune back to the region that had been so generous to him. Mr. Harvie's goal was to collect the objects representing the history and culture of Western Canada as well as from around the world. -

North Vancouver MUSEUM & ARCHIVES SCHOOL PROGRAMS 2018/19 Squamish Community: Our People and Places Teacher’s Package Grade 3 - 5 [SQUAMISH COMMUNITY: OUR PEOPLE AND PLACES KIT] Introduction SQUAMISH COMMUNITY: OUR PEOPLE AND PLACES KIT features 12 archival photographs selected from the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw: The Squamish Community: Our People and Places exhibit presented at the North Vancouver Museum & Archives in 2010. This exhibit was a collaborative project undertaken by the North Vancouver Museum & Archives and the Squamish Nation. These archival images were selected by the Squamish Elders and Language Authority to represent local landscapes, the community and the individual people within the Squamish Nation. The Squamish Elders and Language Authority also contributed to the exhibit labels which are included on the reverse of each picture. This Kit has been designed to complement BC’s Social Studies curriculum for grades 3 - 5, giving students the opportunity to explore themes related to First Nations cultures in the past and cultural First Nations activities today. Included within this Kit is a detailed teacher’s package that provides instructors with lesson plan activities that guide students in the analysis of archival photographs. The recommended activities encourage skills such as critical thinking and cooperative learning. Altogether, the lesson plan activities are estimated to take 1 hour and 45 minutes and can easily be stretched across several instructional days. Through photo analysis worksheets and activities, students will be introduced to the Squamish Nation and historical photographs. Teachers are encouraged to read through the program and adapt it to meet the learning abilities and individual needs of their students. -

But municipal finances do not receive the same degree of public scrutiny as more senior governments. This can pose a problem for taxpayers and voters who want to understand how their municipal government performs, especially compared to other municipalities. To help create awareness and encourage debate, this report provides a summary analysis of important financial information for 17 of the 21 municipal- ities in Metro Vancouver, spanning a 10-year period (2002–2012). The intention is not to make an assessment of any municipality’s finances—for instance, whether taxes or spending are too high or whether municipal governments produce good value for taxpayers. -

Legislation Please Describe: The Sto: lo Nation comprises 7 First Nations: Aitchelitz, Leq'á:mél, Popkum, Skawahlook, Skowkale, Tzeachten, and Yakweakwioose. Is there an attachment? Yes 3. Who are the aboriginal people represented by the First Nation? The Stó:lo, in our Halq'eméylem languague means the "People of the River". We the Stó:lo continue to maintain our shared and collective aboriginal rights and title to S'ólh Téméxw - "Our Land". Our language consists of three main dialects including the upriver dialest called Halq'eméylem, the downriver dialect called Hun'qumyi'num and the island dialect known as Hul'q'umínum'. We are part of the larger Coast Salish group. 4. How many aboriginal people are represented by the First Nation? Approximately 1,500 with 1,089 registered. Early Trail Building in the New Colony of British Columbia — John Hall’s Building of the Coquitlam River and Port Moody Trails Researched and written by Ralph Drew, Belcarra, BC, June 2010; updated Dec 2012 and Dec 2013. A recent “find” of colonial correspondence in the British Columbia Archives tells a story about the construction of the Coquitlam River and Port Moody Trails between 1862 and 1864 by pioneer settler John Hall. (In 1870 Hall pre-empted 160 acres of Crown Land on Indian Arm and became Belcarra’s first European settler.) The correspondence involves a veritable “who’s who” of people in the administration in the young ‘Colony of British Columbia’. This historic account serves to highlight one of the many challenges faced by our pioneers during the period of colonial settlement in British Columbia. Sir James Douglas When the Fraser River Gold Rush began in the spring of 1858, there were only about 250 to 300 Europeans living in the Fraser Valley. The gold rush brought on the order of 30,000 miners flocking to the area in the quest for riches, many of whom came north from the California gold fields. As a result, the British Colonial office declared a new Crown colony on the mainland called ‘British Columbia’ and appointed Sir James Douglas as the first Governor. (1) The colony was first proclaimed at Fort Langley on 19th November, 1858, but in early 1859 the capital was moved to the planned settlement called ‘New Westminster’, Sir James Douglas strategically located on the northern banks of the Fraser River. -
