DEVELOPMENT WORKER (Redcar and Cleveland) 20 hours per week Job Specification Context The Church Urban Fund and the Church of England’s Diocese of York have been working together since 2012 with other churches and faiths, local groups and organisations, to help transform lives and build flourishing communities. Our work is focused in communities where people face multiple challenges. We engage with local authorities, MPs and other agencies to bring the concerns and resources of local churches and communities to areas of joint working. We are the local expression of the Church Urban Fund in the Diocese of York and we are proud to be part of the Together Network which gives a voice on the local and national stage. You can read more about our work at www.cuf.org.uk/about-us-tmc Our history Our first development worker focused activity on Middlesbrough, whilst strengthening links and influence across a wider area. In 2014 the Church Urban Fund and the Diocese led the establishment of a charitable Joint Venture company, Together Middlesbrough and Cleveland (TM&C), to support this activity. We have had a worker in post to establish our work in Redcar & Cleveland since the beginning of 2016: our first appointee has moved on and we are now seeking to refill the post. Aim of the post The core purpose of the post is to develop the work and effect of TM&C in the unitary authority area of Redcar and Cleveland, within the policies, priorities, goals and objectives set by the Board. Within that context and using mature judgement and initiative, the Development Worker will: In collaboration with churches and other agencies (civic, statutory, charitable and voluntary) identify and celebrate the skills, talents and energy within communities through asset- based community development[1], addressing issues of poverty, deprivation, vulnerability and exclusion Raise awareness of identified issues among churches and gain support for initiatives among churches and other agencies and groups [1] https://www.cuf.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=f4afb35e-a17f-425c-b93d-97a135cc332a Co-ordinate, resource and enable the response of churches and church-related charities and voluntary bodies, to support and enable individuals and communities to flourish Organise appropriate public events Promote the work of TM&C, including addressing public meetings Work ecumenically and with people of all faiths and none, and with secular authorities and organisations Maintain key relationships with the other Development Worker within TM&C and with colleagues regionally and nationally, which involves travelling to meetings, and occasional overnight stays Contribute to communications in the form of written reports, promotional material, website and social media, working with local news and broadcast media Report on plans and work to the Board of TM&C, and contribute to the evaluation and monitoring processes of Church Urban Fund The work associated with the post does not consist of direct provision of charitable services to individuals. Your contract will include a requirement to comply with the reasonable instructions given by or on behalf of the Board of TM&C. It will include a requirement in relation to the management or avoidance of conflicts of interest. Occupational requirement: The ethos of TM&C is overtly Christian. Whilst its sponsoring bodies are part of the Church of England, the membership of the Board is ecumenical, as is the ethos of TM&C, and applications are welcome from members of any Christian church. Each interviewed applicant for the post will be required to show how (s)he sympathises with, and will uphold, the Christian ethos of TM&C. Line management and employment matters A director of TM&C will be assigned as your line manager. Your contract will include provision in respect of sickness absence, grievance and disciplinary procedure, etc. Probation and notice period The appointment is subject to a six month probationary period, during which TM&C may terminate your employment upon one week’s notice. Thereafter the notice that you are required to give TM&C is one month. Place of work Flexible working including home working will be necessary, whilst we shall discuss with the appointee the provision of appropriate office facilities. You will not be required to work outside the United Kingdom. You will be required to travel independently within the South Teesside area as part of daily working, in addition to the visits further afield mentioned above. Hours and Remuneration The working time of the post is 20 hours per week, subject to short-term variation by mutual agreement. There is no overtime payment but time off may be taken in lieu. Leave is based pro- rata on a full-time entitlement of 25 days plus public holidays. The gross remuneration is £16,684 (20/35 pro-rata of £29,198). The remuneration is reviewed (upwards only) annually by the Board, though there is no automatic entitlement to an increase. After four months’ employment the company makes a pension contribution of 7.5% of gross salary to the employee’s chosen pension scheme. Reasonable travel expenses necessarily incurred in performing your duties will be reimbursed.
