THE BOOM SIGNAL 37TH Ed., 2016 Boom Operators Worldwide, Greetings from the Gateway Booms at Scott AFB. Gateway Booms are assigned to Headquarters Air Mobility Command, USTRANSCOM (Combatant Command), 18th AF, TACC, the 126th ARW and the 906th ARS. Most of these units are integrated with retired Boom Operators creating policy, guidance, and accomplishing mission execution for Tankers and Boom Operators worldwide. This year Boom Operators and the Tanker community have achieved several milestones. The Air Force activated the new KC-46 Training Squadron at Altus AFB, OK. The new Training Squadron is state of the art; this new unit will transition the way Boom Operators aviate and operate within the combat environment. The KC-10 Cargo Load Trainer is being constructed and will be delivered in 2017. This will revolutionize and streamline Boom Operator cargo load training, and cargo mission execution. We received a large amount of cross-trainees to the career field, this will enhance and strengthen our Tanker community. This upcoming year there will be a lot of changes, more KC-46 bases will be announced, and KC-135 bases will consolidate. I would like to conclude by thanking all active duty and reserve component Boom Operators and their families, for your dedication and sacrifice. The deploy-to-dwell ratio for Boom Operators has not decreased, nearly every mission and conflict requires Tankers. America’s freedom and safety are fortified by our small and elite career field. Lichte December 2008 Air refueling operations continue to be amazing aerial feats, especially for people who witness the process for the first time. As mobility Airmen, we consider it simply part of what we do but, in reality, it is quite remarkable to have two aircraft meeting less than 50 feet apart at more than 20,000 feet above the ground traveling at speeds close to 400 miles per hour while a tanker replenishes another aircraft with the fuel necessary to continue the mission. The amazement is even greater when one considers the first major air refueling operation happened 80 years ago when the Question Mark, a tri-engined Fokker C-2 aircraft with a crew of five, climbed into the southern California sky January 1, 1929. Over the next seven days, the crew kept the aircraft airborne through air refueling from two, three-manned crews operating Douglas C-1 single-engine transports that had been transformed into tankers with the addition of two 150-gallon tanks to off- load fuel. -

Now th 306th helps its NATO partners keep the peace, ir nically, in the same theater as those earlier war y This wing has emeTged today as the major e of the StTategic Air Command's European op 2 306TH STRATEGIC WING MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the 306th Strategic Wing is to develop and maintain operational capability to permit the conduct of "trategic warfare according to the Emergency War Order (EWO) and under conditions of contingency operations. Also, the 306th Strategic Wing assures the capability to conduct assigned strategic reconnaissance and air refueling as tasked. During peacetime, the 306th SW provides air re fueling ana reconnaissance support as tasked by higher headquarters.
