A learning community that emphasizes a student-centered approach and a rigorous curriculum, School One is not a typical school. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds: they are racially, ethnically and economically diverse; they come from low-income city neighborhoods as well as suburban communities. Over 70% receive financial aid. Founded in 1973, School One has held on to many of the core values of its founders, a group of parents who sought an alternative to the one-size-fits-all approach at most high schools. Our mission statement reads: “At School One, we teach students to think, write analyze and create.
