Martin Adam, Ph.D. Annotation The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of a corpus comprising of opening sentences of articles collected from the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. Four different quality categories from Wikipedia were chosen, from the total amount of eight, to ensure gathering of a representative sample, for each category there are fifty sentences, the total amount of the sentences altogether is, therefore, two hundred. The sentences will be analysed according to the Firabsian theory of functional sentence perspective in order to discriminate differences both between the quality categories and also within the categories. -

ORGANIZATION OF THE SESSION At the kind invitation of the Government of the United States of America (USA), the thirty- fourth session of the Regional Association (RA) IV Hurricane Committee was held in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA from 11 to 15 April 2012. The opening ceremony commenced at 09.00 hours on Wednesday, 11 April 2012. 1.1 Opening of the session 1.1.1 Mr Bill Read, Chairman of the RA IV Hurricane Committee, welcomed the members to Jacksonville for the thirty-fourth session of the Committee. He thanked them for their diligence in preparing for the important matters to be considered. Mr Read then welcomed Raytheon, who was displaying the new AWIPS II system currently being implemented by the US National Weather Service (NWS), and being considered for implementation for the National Meteorological Service of Mexico. Mr Read welcomed and thanked Sutron for their generous support of the meeting through sponsorship of the coffee breaks and welcome reception. Mr Read finished by expressing appreciation for the interpreters for the work they did to make our multiple language formats succeed. 1.1.2 On behalf of Mr Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Mr Koji Kuroiwa, Chief of the Tropical Cyclone Programme (TCP), expressed the sincere appreciation of WMO to the Government of the United States for hosting the thirty-fourth session of the Committee. Donlon [email protected] Abstract : Five years of SMOS L-band brightness temperature data intercepting a large number of tropical cyclones (TCs) are analyzed. The storm-induced half-power radio-brightness contrast (ΔI) is defined as the difference between the brightness observed at a specific wind force and that for a smooth water surface with the same physical parameters. ΔI can be related to surface wind speed and has been estimated for ~ 300 TCs that intercept with SMOS measurements. ΔI, expressed in a common storm- centric coordinate system, shows that mean brightness contrast monotonically increases with increased storm intensity ranging from ~ 5 K for strong storms to ~ 24 K for the most intense Category 5 TCs. -

LADB Article Id: 79805 ISSN: 1054-8890 Few Casualties Reported from Mega Hurricane Patricia, but Property Damage Extensive by Carlos Navarro Category/Department: Mexico Published: 2015-11-04 Hurricane Patricia was the most powerful tropical storm to hit the Western Hemisphere in recorded history, packing winds as high as 400 km (250 miles) per hour as it made landfall in Jalisco state on Oct. 23. The satellite images before landfall showed Patricia covering an area larger than Central America. Despite the powerful nature of the storm, rated a Category 5 hurricane, the loss of life was minimal, thanks to the emergency response plans implemented by federal and state authorities and the trajectory of the storm, which landed in a sparsely populated area. The government initially reported a saldo blanco, meaning that no deaths were recorded in the immediate aftermath of the storm. At least 10 deaths were reported in ensuing days, including a couple of campers who were buried under a felled tree and a fatal auto accident that claimed four victims during a spell of rainy weather. -

LADB Article Id: 078323 ISSN: 1054-8890 Flooding in Southeast Mexico Reinforces Warnings about Climate Change by Carlos Navarro Category/Department: Environment and Sustainability Published: 2011-10-19 Mexico is no stranger to hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters, but a recent government report suggests that problems have worsened in recent years because of the impact of climate change. The report, published by the government’s statistics agency (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía, INEGI) on Oct. 11, was released to coincide with the UN-sponsored International Day for Disaster Reduction on Oct. 13. Almost as if to confirm the report, heavy rains caused severe flooding throughout southeastern Mexico and into Central America a week after INEGI released its findings. In Mexico, the floods were especially severe in Tabasco state, although serious problems were also reported in nearby states. Mexico has seen the effects of climate change in various forms, from increased flooding and intense hurricanes to drought and even atypical cold temperatures in some parts of the country. -

KIMBERLAIN NOAA/NWS/NCEP National Hurricane Center, Miami, Florida (Manuscript received 6 July 2012, in final form 18 October 2012) ABSTRACT Overall activity during the 2011 eastern North Pacific hurricane season was near average. Of the 11 tropical storms that formed, 10 became hurricanes and 6 reached major hurricane strength (category 3 or stronger on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale). For comparison, the 1981–2010 averages are about 15 tropical storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. Interestingly, although the number of named storms was below average, the numbers of hurricanes and major hurricanes were above average. The 2011 season had the most hurricanes since 2006 and the most major hurricanes since 1998. Two hurricanes affected the southwestern coast of Mexico (Beatriz as a category 1 hurricane and Jova as a category 2 hurricane), and the season’s tropical cyclones caused about 49 deaths. On average, the National Hurricane Center track forecasts in the eastern North Pacific for 2011 were very skillful. 1. STEWART Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center, NOAA/NWS/NCEP, Miami, Florida (Manuscript received 3 November 2006, in final form 30 April 2007) ABSTRACT The 2005 eastern North Pacific hurricane season is summarized, the individual tropical cyclones are described, and official track and intensity forecasts are verified and evaluated. The season’s overall activity was, by most measures, below average. While a near-average 15 tropical storms formed, many of them were relatively weak and short-lived. Seven of these storms became hurricanes, but only one reached major hurricane status (an intensity of 100 kt or greater on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale) in the eastern North Pacific basin. One of the hurricanes, Adrian, approached Central America in May but weakened to a tropical depression prior to landfall. Adrian was the only eastern North Pacific tropical cyclone to make landfall during 2005, and it was directly responsible for one fatality. 1.
