Page 8 • hp://brighamcity.utah.gov/senior-center.htm Avoiding Tech Support Scams by Carol Kando-Pineda Attorney, Division of Consumer and Business Education Senior Medicare Patrol Newsletter

You’re working on your computer when, suddenly, a message pops up on the screen: “Virus detected! Call now for a free security scan and to repair your device.” That’s a tech support scam. Don’t call, text, or email. Legit tech support compa- nies don’t operate that way.

Scammers pose as big-name companies and use pop-up messages, fake websites, and phone calls to trick you into think- ing your computer has an urgent problem. Their plan is to get your money by selling you worthless software, enrolling you in fake programs, or getting you to pay for useless tech support. The scammers urge you to call a toll-free number immedi- ately, threatening that you may lose personal data if you don’t.

When you call, the scammer might ask you to give them remote access, pretend to run a diagnostic test, or tell you they’ve found a virus or other security issue. They try to sell you a security subscription or other “services” that range from worth- less (for instance, they’re available for free elsewhere) to malicious (they install dangerous software that can help them steal your personal information.)

What should you do? If you get a pop-up to call a number to fix a virus on your computer, ignore it. Your computer is al- most certainly fine. But if you’re concerned about your computer, call your security software company directly — and don’t use the phone number in the pop-up or on caller ID. Use a number you know is real, like the one on a software package or your receipt. Tech support scammers like to place online ads pretend- ing to be legitimate companies, so be sure you have the correct telephone number for the real tech company before calling.

And if someone asks you to pay for anything — including tech support services — with a gift card, cash reload card, or a wire transfer, that’s a scam. No legitimate company will tell you to pay that way. If you see that, report it at FTC.gov/complaint.

September is Cholesterol Education Awareness Month. Take the time this month to find out your cholesterol readings and what they mean. Cholesterol isn't entirely the health villain it's made out to be, its name darkly linked to heart attack, stroke, and other types of cardi- ovascular disease. Our bodies need cholesterol, which is a type of lipid (another name for fat) to make cell membranes, key hor- mones like testosterone and estrogen, the bile acids needed to digest and absorb fats, and vitamin D. Cholesterol is so important to the body that the liver and intestines make it from scratch. What is "bad" about cholesterol isn't the substance itself — in fact, we can't live without it — but how much of it is in the bloodstream. The body packages cholesterol in two main particles: low-density lipoprotein (LDL), “bad cholesterol”, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), “good cholesterol”. Too much LDL in the bloodstream helps create the harmful cholesterol-filled plaques that grow inside arter- ies. Such plaques are responsible for angina (chest pain with exer- tion or stress), heart attacks, and most types of stroke. What caus- es a person's LDL level to be high? Most of the time diet is the key culprit. Eating foods rich in saturated fats, trans fats, and easily digested carbohydrates boost LDL. Genes are sometimes at the root of high cholesterol, and some medications can boost LDL. If you have high cholesterol, making changes in your diet can help bring it down into the healthy range. Exercise can help boost the level of protective HDL. Several types of medication, notably the family of drugs known as statins, can powerfully lower LDL. De- pending on your cardiovascular health, your doctor may recom- mend taking a statin. My Mother always told us not to leave home without a clean, white handkerchief. She always had beauful white handkerchiefs with beauful edges of lace. When I was a child she always made sure my sister and I carried our clean handkerchief to school in the elementary grades for our finger- nail check. You have heard about that in this column before. We spread the clean cloth on the desk, laid our clean hands down with our fingernails all cleaned on top of our handkerchief and the teach- er walked by each desk to view our hands. The me I cringed was when I would have warts. In case you ever need a recipe to get rid of warts, I have one from my pioneer medicine cures. FROG OINT- MENT TO CURE WARTS: "Equal parts by weight of frogs caught in July or August. Steam them with a lile heat for half a day. Then strain them and put into a glass vessel. Do the same amount of angle worms in the same way. The addion of rale snake oil is beer than buer to make the ointment smooth and easy to spread. “There you have it if you ever want to rid your fingers of warts for the handkerchief check. Even my dad carried a large white handkerchief stuffed in his overall pocket if he were working around the farm. I can sll remember watching, when he would dig into his pocket and pull out his handkerchief. Our children think it is gross that we reused the same piece of cloth over and over on the same day, if we needed to. That was before the days of Kleenex boxes and all the "modern con- veniences". In fact in the olden days, if mom needed a "ssue" she would say, "Margie, dear, will you run into the bathroom and get me a piece of toilet paper?" I felt great that we even had a bath- room in the house. Our neighbors and their 8 children sll had an outhouse in the back of their lot! As I write these Meanderings, I am amazed how far we have all meandered into such a modern me!!! My father had a big white handkerchief in his overalls but most of the me he wore a business suit with a beauful handkerchief folded beaufully in his suit pocket by his lapel. Somehow I think he sll had his large handkerchief folded in his suit pant pocket. When mom and dad came to live with us during the last years of their lives, the handkerchiefs came with them. Dad never seled for the newfangled ssues, so he sll carried the 14 square inch white cloth in his pocket! If a grandchild or great grandchild had a runny nose out came the handkerchief! Somehow it al- ways seemed like a gesture of love to me. Dad loved us children, grandchildren and greats and great greats so much! He loved to tell us stories and jokes and commu- nicated with us in many ways. It just seemed that his handkerchief was one gesture of affecon. When my parents were no longer with us and it was me to dis- pose of their things, I kept those handkerchiefs and I sll use them. Recently I had to go to the hospital and as I was signing in, I reached in my purse for something and my hand touched one of my dad's handkerchiefs. All was well. Dad was sending his love.
