STORES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OF NEW ENGLAND Hi Symphony in A major, No. 7, Op. 92 . Ludwig van Beethoven (Born at Bonn, December 16 (?), 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827.) The first sketches of this symphony were made by Beethoven prob- ably before 181 1 or even 18 10. Several of them in the sketch-book that belonged to Petter of Vienna, and was analyzed by Nottebohm, were for the first movement. Two sketches for the famous allegretto are mingled with phrases of the Quartet in C major, Op. 59, No. 3, dedicated in 18 18 to Count Rasoumoffsky. One of the two bears the title: "Anfang Variations." There is a sketch for the Scherzo, first in F major, then in C major, with the indication: "Second part." Another sketch for the Scherzo bears a general resemblance to the beginning of the "Dance of Peasants" in the Pastoral Symphony, for which reason it was rejected. In one of the sketches for the Finale Beethoven wrote: "Goes at first in F-sharp minor, then in C-sharp minor." He preserved this modulation, but he did not use the theme to which the indication was attached. Another motive in the Finale as sketched was the Irish air, "Nora Creina," for which he wrote an accompaniment at the request of George Thomson, the collector of Scottish, Welsh, and Irish melodies. Thayer states that Beethoven began the composition of the Seventh Symphony in the spring of 18 12. Prod'homme believes that the work was begun in the winter of 1811-12. The autograph manuscript that belongs to the Mendelssohn family of Berlin bears the inscription: "Sinfonie. L. v. Bthvn 18 12 i3ten M." A clumsy binder cut the paper so that only the first line of the M is to be seen. There was therefore a dispute as to whether the month were May, June, or July. Beethoven wrote to Varena on May 8, 18 12: "I promise you imme- diately a wholly new symphony for the next Academy, and, as I now have opportunity, the copying will not cost you a heller." As the Archduke Ru- dolph will have it copied, you will be at no expense in the matter." It is generally believed that the symphony was completed May 13, in the hope that it would be performed at a concert of Whitsuntide. The first performance of the symphony was at Vienna, in the large hall of the university, on December 8, 18 13. Malzel, the famous maker of automata, exhibited in Vienna during the winter of 1812-13 his automatic trumpeter and panharmonicon. The former played a French cavalry march with calls and tunes; the latter was composed of the instruments used in the ordinary military band of the period,—trumpets, drums, flutes, clarinets, oboes, cymbals, triangle, etc. The keys were moved by a cylinder, and overtures by Handel and Cherubini and Haydn's Military Symphony were played with ease and precision. Beethoven planned his "Wellington's Sieg," or "Battle of Vittoria," for this machine. Malzel made arrangements for a concert,—a concert "for the benefit of Austrian and Bavarian soldiers disabled at the battle of Hanau." The arrangements for this charity concert were made in haste, for several musicians of reputation were then, as birds of passage, in Vienna, and they wished to take parts. Among the distinguished executants were Salieri and Hummel, two of the first chapel -masters of Vienna, who looked after the cannon in "Wellington's Sieg"; the young Meyerbeer, who beat the bass drum and of whom Beethoven said ' to Tomaschek : ' Ha ! ha ! ha ! I was not at all satisfied with him ; he never struck on the beat; he was always too late, and I was obliged to speak to him rudely. Ha ! ha ! ha ! I could do nothing with him ; he did not have the courage to strike on the beat!" Spohr and Mayseder were seated at the second and third violin desks, and Schuppanzigh was the concert-master; the celebrated Dragonetti was among the double-basses. Beethoven conducted. THE BOOK OF THE BALDWIN free upon request. 366 FIFTH AVENUE, NEW YORK CITY aw The programme was as follows: "A brand-new symphony," the Seventh, in A major, by Beethoven; two marches, one by Dussejc, the other by Pleyel, played by Malzel's automatic trumpeter with full orchestral accompaniment; "Wellington's Sieg, oder die Schlacht bei Vittoria." "Wellington's Sieg" was completed in October of 1813 to celebrate the victory of Wellington over the French troops in Spain on June 21 of that year. Malzel had persuaded Beethoven to compose the piece for his panharmonicon, and furnished material for it, and had even given him the idea of using "God save the King" as the subject of a lively fugue. Malzel's idea was to produce the work at concerts, so as to raise money enough for him and Beethoven to go to London.

    THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued.

    VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. Bergamo, 1882-Buenos Aires, 1954. A student in Milan of Giuseppe Quiroli, whom she later married, Agostinelli made her debut in Pavia, 1903, as Giordano’s Fedora. She appeared with success in South America, Russia, Spain, England and her native Italy and was on the roster of the Manhattan Opera, 1908-10. One New York press notice indicates that her rendering of the “Suicidio” from La Gioconda on a Manhattan Sunday night concert “kept her busy bowing in recognition to applause for three or four minutes”. At La Scala she was cast with Battistini in Simon Boccanegra and created for that house in 1911 the Marschallin in their first Rosenkavalier. Chapter 1 makes note of the much greater familiarity of other choral works of the Romantic period, and observes critics’ and scholars’ recognition (or lack thereof) of Liszt’s religiosity. Chapter 2 discusses Liszt’s father Adam, his religious and musical experiences, and his influence on the young Franz. Chapter 3 explores Liszt’s early adulthood in Paris, particularly with respect to his intellectual growth. Special attention is given to François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand and the Abbé Félicité de Lamennais, and the latter’s papal condemnation. After Chapter 4 briefly chronicles Liszt’s artistic achievements in Weimar and its ramifications for the rest of his work, Chapter 5 examines theological trends in the nineteenth century, as exemplified by David Friedrich Strauss, and the Catholic Church’s rejection of such novelties. The writings of Charles Rosen aid in decribing the possible musical ramifications of modern theology. Chapter 6 takes stock of the movements for renewal in Catholic music, especially the work of Prosper Gueranger and his fellow Benedictine monks of Solesmes, France, and of the Society of Saint Cecilia in Germany.

    FORMAL AND HARMONIC CONSIDERATIONS IN CLARA SCHUMANN'S DREI ROMANZEN, OP. 21, NO. 1 Katie Lakner A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2015 Committee: Gregory Decker, Advisor Gene Trantham © 2015 Katie Lakner All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Gregory Decker, Advisor As one of her most mature works, Clara Schumann’s Drei Romanzen, op. 21, no. 1, composed in 1855, simultaneously encapsulates her musical preferences after half a lifetime of extensive musical study and reflects the strictures applied to “women’s music” at the time. During the Common Practice Period, music critics would deride music by women that sounded too “masculine” or at least not “feminine” enough. Women could not write more progressive music without risking a backlash from the music critics. However, Schumann’s music also had to earn the respect of her more progressive fellow composers. In this piece, she achieved that balance by employing a very Classical formal structure and a distinctly Romantic, if somewhat restrained, harmonic language. Роль профессора пения Парижской консерватории в создании карьеры оперной певицы (по материалам переписки Эдмона Дювернуа и Айно Акте) Хелена Тюрвяйнен (Хельсинки) Аннотация. Собрание рукописей оперной певицы Айны Акте-Яландер (Aino /Aïno Ackté-Jalander; 1876– 1944) в Национальной библиотеке Финляндии (Хель- синки) содержит одну из самых обширных и интерна- ционально ориентированных эпистолярных коллекций в архивах финских музыкантов- профессионалов. Кол- лекция не только проливает свет на солидную между- народную репутацию талантливой представитель- ницы Великого княжества Финляндского в поздний период истории Российской империи, но и свидетель- ствует о динамичном процессе интернационализации финской музыкальной жизни. В настоящей статье рассматриваются этапы про- фессионального становления певицы в связи с дина- мичным, постоянно менявшимся полем воздействия существовавших одновременно культурных столиц. Основу публикации составляют 117 писем, почтовых открыток, записок, которые преподаватель по классу пения Эдмон Дювернуа (1844–1927) писал Айно Акте в течение тридцати лет. Письма Дювернуа дают пред- ставление о карьерной стратегии оперной певицы прежде всего в Париже; раскрывают вопросы взаи- модействия Парижской оперы с другими оперными театрами того времени, в частности Метрополитен- 226 опера Нью-Йорка. Письма же самой Акте к Дювернуа неизвестны. Представленная переписка свидетельствует о ключе- вой роли преподавателя вокала в Париже как учителя пения, репетитора, опекуна и посредника между уча- щимся и оперным учреждением на протяжении всей профессиональной жизни певца. Учитель договари- вался с оперными режиссерами об ангажементах, ко- торые давали бывшему ученику роли, подходившие ему по типу.
