MOROGORO, TANZANIA. 2016 ii ABSTRACT The present study was carried out in 2014 in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in order to classify Chagga agroforestry homegardens and establish their relative contributions to food, income and wood energy to the local communities. The study methodology included random selection of four divisions, one ward from each division, one village from each ward and 30 households per village forming a total sample of 120 households. A social survey was subsequently carried out using questionnaires employed to household heads and checklists of probe questions for key informants. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 and Microsoft Excel Programs. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed to compare means between and within treatments and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was used to separate the significantly differing means. Results indicated that all five renewable natural resource components of woody perennials, herbaceous crops, animals, insects and aquatic life-forms were present in the Chagga agroforestry homegardens which were in various interactions broadly classified into nine agroforestry systems with the Agrosilvopastoral system being the most widely spread and the Agroaquosilvicultural, Agroaquosilvopastoral, Aposilvopastoral and Silvopastoral systems being, in that order, the least spread throughout the district. Spatial arrangements of components were the most common arrangement forming agroforestry technologies like boundary planting, mixed intercropping and live fences.

This was the fifth Census after the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. Other censuses were carried out in 1967, 1978, 1988 and 2002. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Climate change has a large effect on agriculture sector and, consequently, on the food available for residents of Hai District and other regions of Tanzania. Based on four decades of climate data, this study assessed the impacts of climate change and its potential vulnerability on food availability in Hai District, Kilimanjaro region. The results from this study suggest an association between food crop production and variation in climate (temperature and rainfall) in Hai District. Considering the aspect of rainfall and temperature, we demonstrate that rainfall and temperature have signi- ficant relationship with maize and bean outputs. The rainfall had a strong positive association with maize and beans production and whereas temperature had inverse relationship with maize and beans yields. With the annual loss $0.04 million and $0.01 million per year from cattle and goats/sheep respectively and the additional annual loss of $29 million and $10.8 million from ma- ize and bean crops respectively in Hai District during years of severe and prolonged droughts, our study highlighted how severe droughts can dramatically affect agriculture production and food security in the area.

DSM, Tz. 1 - 79 pp. 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The North Pare Mountains lie at the northern-most end of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania, just 30 kilometres east of Mount Kilimanjaro. Relative to other Eastern Arc Mountains, the North Pare Mountains are considered to be a low conservation priority due to the paucity of endemic species (Burgess et al. 2007; Burgess et al. 1998). The North Pare Mountains have also been subject to far less biodiversity research than some other Eastern Arc Mountain blocks such as the Udzungwas and East Usambaras. The correlation between research effort and documented biodiversity values has been demonstrated in other parts of the Eastern Arc such as the Rubehos (Doggart et al. 2006) and Ngurus (Doggart and Loserian 2007).

    Huria Journal vol. 26(2), September 2019 Local Community Perceptions on Causes of Climate Change in Dry Areas of Rombo District, Tanzania Evarist Fundisha Department of Geography and Economics, Mkwawa University College of Education E-mail : [email protected] Abstract: The study assessed community perceptions on the causes of climate change in the drought area of Rombo District in Tanzania. Corroboration of the research findings were made by employing different methods of gathering data including questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews. While quantitative data were analysed by statistical package for social science software to generate descriptive statistics, qualitative data were analysed thematically. Data were mainly presented by using tables, figures and the participants’ narrations or voices. Results indicated varied perceptions on the causes of climate change that are shaped by levels of education, age, sex, marital status and possession of communication facilities. Despite the varied perceptions on the causes of climate change, the anthropogenic factors were frequently mentioned by the study participants. Thus, the study recommends on creating awareness among members of the studied community through education on the actual causes of climate change for effective intervention measures. Key words: Climate change, community perceptions, drought area Introduction There exist different schools of thought on the causes of climate change. A report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) attributes the current climate change primarily to human activities and secondarily to natural processes. In this regard, Singer (2008) also observed that climate change is a natural phenomenon. The difference between human and nature-induced climate change has also been reported by Cunningham and Cunningham (2004) that human-induced climate change takes place rapidly, whereas nature-induced change takes place gradually.

This paper examines two farming systems: the traditional farming of the Chagga people on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the modern paddy farming introduced by Japanese foreign aid. The Chagga practice intensive land use by intercropping coffee and banana. They also combine farming. forestry and livestock in a sophisticated homestead farm, the "kihamba," which I call an "agrosilvipastoral complex" system. Japanese style modern paddy farming started from 1985 in the semi-arid lower zone. Its economic performance varies greatly among farmers. It is thus important to grasp the significance of, and limits to, both traditional and modern farming in this area.
