HIGHLIGHTS OF August 2019 New Fairfield Senior Center offers a daily lunch program provided by The Greater Bridgeport Senior Community Café, computer classes, sewing groups, card groups (including Poker Bridge and Canasta), Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, and Weight Training classes, and a Women’s Book group. Friends of the Senior Center meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 4pm and The Commission on the Aging meets the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm. Daily calendars are available at the Center. Fill The Backpack: Donations accepted throughout August up until August 23 Join us at the Senior Center to help supply the students at the Consolidated School for the new school year. We encourage you to bring one item from the supply list every time you come to the Senior Center and place them in the very large red backpack in the great room. We will make sure every donation gets to the Consolidated School in time for the new school year to start. Let’s all chip in and ensure that all the students at the Consolidated School have a successful new school year. Bodies in Motion: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10:45 Starting August 1 Enjoy this easy-to-follow class with up-beat music, can be done seated or standing at your own pace and skill and safety level. It uses a combination of weights and resistance bands, as well as several body weight exercises. This class is offered three times a week in order to maximize carry over and functional progression. Join this social exercise group and make some new friends. You will find it fun while focusing on your breathing and improving your balance and reducing your risk of falls. Cornhole: Thursdays at 3:00pm Show off your cornhole skills and have some fun. Show up and join the red or blue team. See which team is the first to score 21. Garden Club Friday, August 2 at 10:00 am Garden Club members meet to plan their season. Hot Dog Bingo: Monday, August 5, 1:15pm Hot Dog! $6 covers both 1st Bingo card and refreshments. Additional cards are $1.00 each. Please, adults only. Come for fun. Men’s Breakfast Club Tuesday, August 6, 8:30 am The first Tuesday of each month, enjoy some hot catered breakfast foods. Donations are kindly requested to offset the cost of breakfast. Registration is required. Walking Club: Tuesday, August 6, 9:30 am Walkers go to Fairfield Hills, Tuesday, August 13 at 10:30 General Meeting. Tuesday, August 20 at 9:30 Walkers go to Harrybrook. Tuesday, August 27 at 9:30 Walkers go to Deer Pond. Walkers meet at the Senior Center to plan future walks. Our new goal is Shannon, Ireland at 3,300 miles. NEW Day for Meditation Group Forming: Tuesdays at 10:30 Vasu Anburajan has been practicing Raja Yoga Meditation for the last 10 years. She will be teaching the basic concept of Raja Yoga Meditation, which is to think positive and change a negative thought to a positive one. Consistent meditation on a daily basis boosts self-esteem, and makes one confident, self- assured and able to make decisions with clarity. Come join this group and learn to open up your consciousness. Introductory Spanish Course: beginning Wednesday, August 7 at 9:30 am You asked for it and, finally, your opportunity to learn Spanish has arrived. Fresh from her annual immersion in the language which consists of a visit to several Spanish- speaking countries, Language Specialist Julia Blair will be providing an 8-week introductory Spanish class right here at the Senior Center. Julia’s class promises a number of interactive activities that will keep it entertaining while you learn the basics of this language that’s so common in our area. The entire course, 8 classes, is available to you for $30 plus $16 for your book. Space is limited so sign up soon. Bronx Club: Wednesday, August 7 at 11:00 We will share memories and experiences and meet other “Bronx Transplants”. We may live in Connecticut now, but our hearts will always be in the Bronx! Blood Pressure Screening: Thursday, August 8, 9:00am and Tuesday August 20 at 1:00 Come for a free screening of your blood pressure. Piano Lessons: Mondays 2:30 pm Walter Jakoboski offers private piano instruction on Mondays right at the Senior Center. He offers a reduced rate for seniors for 30 minutes and, whether beginner or more advanced, he can tailor the class to you. Your Electric Bill – Tuesdays at 11:00 am Schedule an appointment with Doug Stram who will help you analyze your electric bill and can help you find the company with the best rates. He can also show you how to read your own meter and get your cost down. Investment Club – Tuesdays 1:30 pm Meet weekly in the Community Room to share money lessons and tips on stocks and portfolios shared with like- minded individuals. Stay on top of the world’s changing financial picture with guest speakers and discussions covering today’s hottest financial topics Woodcarving: Wednesdays at 2:00pm Try your hand at this ancient art with Will Lewis. He comes every Wednesday and guides students through many different woodcarving projects. Come learn a new craft. . French Class: Thursdays 9:00 am This fun and casual class taught by Claire Tuffereau is for those who have a basic knowledge of French and want to keep that knowledge alive, and also for people who had one or two or more years of French in school and think they have forgotten most of it. Grandparents Ice Cream Social: Wednesday, August 14 at 1:00 pm We will be hosting a special afternoon for grandparents and their grandchildren or younger friends. Massages with Scott and Cathy: Wednesday, August 14, 21 and 28, 2-4 pm Scott Coldwell of Phoenix Therapeutic Massage & Personal Training is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Well coach. He will be giving the massages on August 14 and 28. Cathy from Healing Hands will be giving the massage on August 21. Women’s Book Club: We will resume in September. Live Production of “You’re Only Old Once”: Thursday, August 22 at 2:00pm If laughter is your best medicine, come see your fellow seniors perform “You’re Only Old Once!” which is a delightful new defense against aging. Anyone who has ever submitted to a battery of medical tests will empathize with this Dr. Seuss character. This play follows our senior through her checkup with the experts at the Golden Years Clinic. Dr. Seuss lightens the aches and pains of growing old with his inimitable wit and wisdom. Foot Reflexology Appointments with Kim Stewart: Monday, August 26, 10-12pm Reflexology reduces stress, promotes relaxation, improves circulation of oxygen and nutrients, also detoxifies and cleanses the body. Singing Group: Tuesday, August 27 at 2:15 You said you wanted to join a singing group, we listened! Diana Downes will be our singing captain. Come join this group and start singing. Commission on Aging Meeting – Tuesday, August 27, 7:30pm The Commission on Aging studies the conditions and needs of New Fairfield’s senior population regarding health, transportation, housing and any other issue that may impact their wellbeing. The Commission evaluates and advocates for the specific needs of Seniors in our community. Meetings are open to the public. We welcome your input, suggestions and concerns. Bunco: Wednesday, August 28 at 1:00 pm Join our Bunco Group. Bunco is the ultimate activity because it’s easy and quick. You can play and chat at the same time. I highly recommend signing up for it. New Moon: Thursday, August 29 at 1:00pm Come let’s discuss plans for September using the power of the analytical solutions of the healer Virgo. Caregivers Support Group – Saturday, August 31 at 10:00 am Maureen Salerno, LCSW, is offering a session at the Center once a month for caregivers who need support and information. This group is for any family member or friend who cares for a loved one, whether the limitation is due to an illness, an injury, dementia or something else.

Movies: “The Untouchables”: Friday, August 2, 1:00 pm After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City's police force. Georgia opens the group's eyes to the beauty of an exotic land, and, in the process, rediscovers her kefi. “Dumbo”: Friday, August 23, 1 pm Struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists a former star and his two children to care for Dumbo, a baby elephant born with oversized ears. When the family discovers that the animal can fly, it soon becomes the main attraction -- bringing in huge audiences and revitalizing the run-down circus. The elephant's magical ability also draws the attention of V.A. Vandevere, an entrepreneur who wants to showcase Dumbo in his latest, larger- than-life entertainment venture. “The Great Ziegfeld” Friday, August 30 at 1:00 pm This lively biopic depicts the rise of Florenz Ziegfeld (), a theater producer who became renowned during the 1920s for his lavish stage productions. Starting out by promoting individual performers, Ziegfeld established revues featuring dozens of women, shows that developed into his famous on Broadway. His appreciation of women is also apparent off-stage, leading to a love triangle involving actresses () and ().
