Puskás, the World Brand: Celebrity Endorsements, Brand Expansions and Other Curious Phenomena
II Nemzetközi Turizmus és Sportmenedzsment Konferencia 2012. szeptember 5-6, Debrecen PUSKÁS, THE WORLD BRAND: CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS, BRAND EXPANSIONS AND OTHER CURIOUS PHENOMENA PAPP-VÁRY, ÁRPÁD1 – REKETTYE, GÁBOR1 1Budapest College of Communication and Business Email: [email protected]; [email protected] According to various surveys, „Puskás” is the most well-known Hungarian word. This „brand” is not just known around the world, but respected and loved. Puskás became a world star in a time when there was no Internet and television had just started gaining popularity. But why did he become so great, not only as a player but as a brand too? The article looks for the marketing aspects of this brilliant story. It covers his celebrity endorsements/sponsors, and the products/brands which used or use his (brand) name. The possible future of the Puskás brand is also discussed. Keywords: Ferenc Puskás, football, personal branding, celebrity endorsement, merchandising 1. Introduction: the greatest Hungarian football player Ferenc Puskás (1927-2006), without a doubt is the greatest Hungarian football player of all times. Even though it was not him, who wore the Hungarian national shirt the most times, having scored 84 times in 85 matches is still an outstanding performance. This is especially true since he did not return after the 1956 revolution, thus only played a little more than ten years for the national team (and appeared four times in the Spanish national team). His most memorable move is probably the “drag-back” goal against England, when Hungary won for 6:3. It is not a coincidence that in 2009 FIFA established the Puskás award for the most beautiful goal. -

Nationalism and Sporting Culture: a Media Analysis of Croatia's Participation in the 1998 World
Nationalism and Sporting Culture: A Media Analysis of Croatia’s Participation in the 1998 World Cup Andreja Milasincic, BPHED Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Health Sciences (Health and Physical Education) Supervisor: Ian Ritchie, PhD Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario L2S 3A1 Andreja Milasincic © November 2013 Abstract The past two centuries have witnessed the rise of nationalist movements and widespread nationalism. As these movements gained strength in Europe, sport played a role in their development. Media representations of sport recount events in a way that reinforces cultural values and this research investigates media representations of Croatian nationalism in the weeks surrounding the country’s third place victory in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Sociological theories alongside more contemporary theories of sport and nation construction are considered. Croatian newspapers were analyzed for elements of national identity construction. The study concludes that the 1998 World Cup played an important role in Croatia’s on-going construction of nationhood and invention of nationalist traditions. This research further demonstrates sport’s ability to evoke strong emotions that are difficult to witness in other areas of social life and the direct role of sport in garnering nationalism. Keywords: nationalism, identities, newspapers, Croatia, soccer Acknowledgments The successful composition of this thesis required the support and direction of various individuals. First and foremost, a thank you to my supervisor, Dr. Ian Ritchie, for the countless hours spent encouraging, advising, and offering constructive criticisms throughout the research process. Your support and guidance have been not only appreciated but also vital to the completion of this thesis. -

Dr. Omaima M. Kandil Prof. of Embryo Biotechnology email: [email protected] Abstract: Culture conditions for in vitro embryo production (IVP) in domestic species have been improved in recent years. Despite the low reproductive performance, camels are probably the last large domestic species to experience the benefit from these in vitro culture techniques. The aim of the present study was to compare the in vitro maturation (IVM) of camel oocytes in different culture media. The effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on camel oocyte maturation was also examined. Oocytes (n=8805) were aspirated from 604 camel ovaries during the breeding season. Selected oocytes were cultured in TCM-199 and CR1aa media at 38.5 ºC, under 5% CO2 for 40 h. Oocytes were also matured in culture media supplemented with EGF (20 ng/ml).Maturation of camel oocytes was assessed at end of incubation. Assessment of cytoplasmic maturation of camel oocytes was carried out through 4 grades (G0, G1, G2 and G3) of cumulus cell expansion. -
