Received: 14 December 2018; Accepted: 28 February 2019; Published: 19 March 2019 Abstract: Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a huge class of Contaminants of Emerging Concern, well-known to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. They have been detected in different environmental matrices, in wildlife and even in humans, with drinking water being considered as the main exposure route. Therefore, the present study focused on the estimation of PFAS in the Metropolitan Area of Turin, where SMAT (Società Metropolitana Acque Torino S.p.A.) is in charge of the management of the water cycle and the development of a tool for supporting “smart” water quality monitoring programs to address emerging pollutants’ assessments using multivariate spatial and statistical analysis tools. A new “green” analytical method was developed and validated in order to determine 16 different PFAS in drinking water with a direct injection to the Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) system and without any pretreatment step.

  • Borehole Thermal Energy Storage) Y = 0.0137X + 15.873 23 to 160 Days)
Ground Heat Storage Systems: perspective in Mediterranean environments Jessica Maria Chicco,1* Nicolò Giordano2, Giuseppe Mandrone1 1Department of Earth Sciences, University of Turin, Via Valperga Caluso 35, 10125 Italy 2Institut national de la recherche scientifique, Centre Eau Terre Environnement, 490 Rue de la Couronne, Québec, QC G1K 9A9, Canada * [email protected] 1. Introduction and state of the art Geothermal energy is one of the more environmentally friendly energy source, continuously expanding between the renewable energies, and is expected to more than triple until 2050 (International Energy Agency, 2018). In particular, cooling down is catching on. As a result of populations and incomes growth the use of air conditioners is becoming increasingly common, especially in commercial buildings and high-density residences of the hottest world regions, like Mediterranean areas. A new frontier is covered by ground heat storage systems such as Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES). These systems contribute to a large-scale energy efficiency and a long-term storage of thermal energy, significantly reducing environmental impacts, increasing the potential uptake and recovering heat flows that are otherwise lost. They are commonly used in Northern Europe (e.g. Norway, The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden) and in Northern America (e.g. Canada). Focusing on Mediterranean Countries, cooling demand is especially higher than the heating one. It is usually covered through refrigeration systems such as vapor compression devices, which employs electrically driven compressors to transfer energy (Jakubcionis and Carlsson 2018). One of the objective of this project, is then to implement the current studies, such as monitoring thermal underground thermal behavior and modelling of potential UTES resources, transferring this model to other hydro-geological contexts as well.

  • SWE PIEDMONT Vs TUSCANY BACKGROUNDER
SWE PIEDMONT vs TUSCANY BACKGROUNDER ITALY Italy is a spirited, thriving, ancient enigma that unveils, yet hides, many faces. Invading Phoenicians, Greeks, Cathaginians, as well as native Etruscans and Romans left their imprints as did the Saracens, Visigoths, Normans, Austrian and Germans who succeeded them. As one of the world's top industrial nations, Italy offers a unique marriage of past and present, tradition blended with modern technology -- as exemplified by the Banfi winery and vineyard estate in Montalcino. Italy is 760 miles long and approximately 100 miles wide (150 at its widest point), an area of 116,303 square miles -- the combined area of Georgia and Florida. It is subdivided into 20 regions, and inhabited by more than 60 million people. Italy's climate is temperate, as it is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and protected from icy northern winds by the majestic sweep of alpine ranges. Winters are fairly mild, and summers are pleasant and enjoyable. NORTHWESTERN ITALY The northwest sector of Italy includes the greater part of the arc of the Alps and Apennines, from which the land slopes toward the Po River. The area is divided into five regions: Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. Like the topography, soil and climate, the types of wine produced in these areas vary considerably from one region to another. This part of Italy is extremely prosperous, since it includes the so-called industrial triangle, made up of the cities of Milan, Turin and Genoa, as well as the rich agricultural lands of the Po River and its tributaries.

  • Economic Inequality in Northwestern Italy: a Long-Term View (Fourteenth to Eighteenth Centuries)
Guido Alfani PAM - Bocconi University Dondena Centre and IGIER Via Roentgen 1, 20136 Milan - Italy [email protected] Economic inequality in northwestern Italy: a long-term view (fourteenth to eighteenth centuries) (provisional version – please ask for author’s consent to quote) 1 Abstract This article provides a comprehensive picture of economic inequality in northwestern Italy (Piedmont), focusing on the long-term developments occurred during 1300-1800 ca. Regional studies of this kind are rare, and none of them has as long a timescale. The new data proposed illuminate many little-known aspects of wealth distribution and general economic inequality in preindustrial times, and support the idea that during the Early Modern period, inequality grew everywhere: both in cities and in rural areas, and independently from whether the economy was growing or stagnating. This finding challenges earlier views that explained inequality growth as the consequence of economic development. The importance of demographic processes affecting inequality is underlined, and the impact of severe mortality crises, like the Black Death, is analyzed. Keywords Economic inequality; wealth concentration; middle ages; early modern period; Piedmont; Sabaudian States; Italy; plague; Black Death Acknowledgements The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013)/ERC Grant agreement No. 283802, EINITE-Economic Inequality across Italy and Europe, 1300-1800. 2 The history of long-term trends in economic inequality is still largely to be written. After decades of research, mostly generated by Simon Kuznets' seminal 1955 article which introduced the notion that inequality would follow an inverted-U path through the industrialization process (the so-called ‘Kuznets curve’)1, we now have a good knowledge of the developments in inequality through the last couple of centuries, although only for selected countries like Britain, France, Italy, Spain, and the U.S.

Sent to press: 2016. This guide is the outcome of the work begun in 2013, VisitAMIcommissioned by the City of Ivrea, in which institutes and associations worked jointly as part of the ongoing project for promoting the Moraine Amphitheatre of Ivrea-AMI (Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea). The AMI is described page after page, making the guide a useful way for visitors to discover the many artistic resources and all the natural scenery made even more attractive when combined with the many outdoor activities available. And then there are details about the extensive offer of wine and food and the many events that, during the year, are able to offer a unique, delightful experience. AMI is all this and much more, whose hidden nooks and marvels can be discovered by tourists in the many routes proposed.
