INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS Membership Committee “A PROGRAM OF THE SOVEREIGN GRAND LODGE AND THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REBEKAH ASSEMBLIES TO OBTAIN MEMBERSHIP GAINS IN ALL UNITS OF ALL BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY OF ODD FELLOWSHIP”

September 2013

Greetings our Brothers and Sisters,

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM 2013-2014

Welcome to a new year of service in Odd Fellowship, as we grow nearer to the 200th Anniversary of our Order, in North America.

Most of us have made a Will to see that our precious possessions are secured at the end of our life. This is good for everyone to do. Have you thought that the way to secure our Order, is by bringing in one new member? We have a precious possession, handed to us by whomever signed our petition. It is up to us to pass it on, in good condition, to those who come after us. Pass it on now, by sponsoring a new member. Our plan is to get this message to every Odd Fellow and Rebekah!

Our new Membership Program begins January 1, 2014, and we will be offering the following incentives to those who work and bring in new members into the Order (to an Odd Fellows or Rebekah Lodge):

Members who sponsor ten new members will receive an Odd Fellow or Rebekah Merit Jewel; Every Jurisdiction not showing a gain this past year, reporting a net gain of ten or more will receive a beautiful, engraved, Odd Fellow or Rebekah Lamp; The Jurisdictions showing the greatest gain in new members and the greatest percentage in gain of new members, will receive their choice of a custom made Odd Fellow or Rebekah Desk Chair, Rocking Chair or Straight Back Chair. We will print photos of the awards in the next issue of the “I.O.O.F. News”

We will reward Grand Masters and Assembly Presidents who promote the membership program on each of their Official Visits, will receive a complimentary Past Grand Master or Past President’s Jewel.

We could pay no higher tribute to the memory of Thomas Wildey, our Founder, than to show an increase in membership, Order wide. It must begin with you. You CAN make a difference: one person at a time.

The Sovereign Grand Lodge has produced a wonderful “Membership Handbook”, a great tool for every member, these will be sent to all new members of the Order and available at a cost of $2.00 to the membership at large through your grand body secretary.

Fraternally yours,

Charles E. Worrell, Sr. Charles E. Worrell, Sr. Past Sovereign Grand Master

III. STRUCTURE Are our Grand Lodges and Sovereign Grand Lodge functioning:

. Is the current organizational structure effective or ineffective? . Just as a central Office of Record? . Does it promote equality and true democracy? .Are we still stuck in a beaurocratic style of leadership? . Just as a center of Authority? .Do our membership need more authority and less autonomy to be effective? . Or also as an agency of Service? .Or more autonomy and less authority? . A source of Unification? .What do members think about our leaders? .What is the leadership style members would prefer? . An agency of Promotion? .Are our leaders staying in their offices too long that it hampered the growth . An agency of inspiration? and improvement of our Order? . If so, do we have the “right” people .Is our way of communication effective or ineffective? and “right” attitudes to deliver all . Efficient or inefficient? Out dated or updated? these services efficiently and .How can we improve our jurisdictional and international governing effectively? system?

IV. TECHNOLOGY Several things that they want to be changed: . Indifference of our members in general (internal conflicts) .Are our technologies aligned with the . Lack of unity in promoting our Order current century? .Lack of knowledge in presenting what our Order stands for. .Are the technological changes we are .Lack of dedication to the ideals of Odd Fellowship doing aligned with the skills and talents of .Lack of “charisma” and skills to attract and RETAIN new and younger our membership? members .Do our members and employees have the .Unwillingness to tolerate each other (young members versus senior necessary skills to fit the fraternal services members) needed in the current century? .Aging and stagnant membership .Should we train our members and .Very slow succession of officers and representatives (Stagnant leadership) employees to deliver the necessary services .Closed-minded and difficult members who are the “reason” why lodge is not our members and non-members look for? growing and why younger ones are not participating. .What then are those services? .An attitude of apathy and non-involvement .Out-dated technology, products and services .Individualism: Lodge caring only for their own. .Lodges that are really doing nothing .

Several things that they want to be changed: SHOULD WE EVALUATE OUR SERVICES AND MEMBERS AS AN ORGANIZATION AND FIND OUT WHERE DID WE GO WRONG? “I joined, went through the steps, attended 4 to 5 Sense of meetings and all I saw was confusion, chaos and People Services contentment bickering. I now do not attend, nor do I want to. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows needs to get itself in order INTERNALLY before they let everyone else see it.” Sense of value Organizational Commitment
