The 2009 Pilgrimage will take place on Sunday, May 3 at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremo- nies will begin at 1:00 PM with a Parade from the USS Maine Mast staging area, followed by the Memorial Service and Wreath Laying Ceremonies at the Tomb. The Pilgrimage Address at the Tomb will be delivered by the Honorable Richard G. ‘Dick’ Proulx, Sovereign Grand Master.

The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, at 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22311, will be our head- quarters. Room reservations are to be made directly with the Hotel, at toll-free 1-800-Hiltons (1-800-445- 8667) or 1-703-845-1010. You MUST mention “Odd Fellows Pilgrimage” when reserving your room to re- ceive the special rate of $120.00 plus hotel tax. (See attached information about hotel accommodations).

The Annual Pilgrimage Banquet will be held in the Hotel’s Plaza Ballroom West, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 7:00 PM. (Advance ticket purchase required - see attached pre-registration form). A social hour will be held in the Plaza Ballroom West Foyer from 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM. After the banquet, all present will have the opportunity to meet and greet the Honorable Richard G. ‘Dick’ Proulx, Sovereign Grand Master, Sover- eign Grand Lodge from the Jurisdiction of Wisconsin; Sister Marilyn L. HOTEL INFORMATION Hilton Alexandria Mark Center 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22311 1-703-845-1010 or 1-800-HILTONS (1-800-445-8667)

Reservations are now being accepted and should be made as soon as possible.

The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center is the headquarters hotel for the 2009 I.O.O.F. Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknowns. To receive the special rate of $120.00 plus hotel tax, available for the nights of Apr. 29-May 3, reservations must be made no later than March 31, 2009. You must mention the "ODD FELLOWS PILGRIMAGE" when making your reservation in order to receive this rate and to obtain the specially reduced parking rate. The hotel will accept reser- vations on a space available basis after March 31, 2009 but not at this reduced price. Only telephone reservations are accepted 1-703-845-1010 or 1-800-HILTONS (1-800-445-8667). It is imperative that reservations are made as early as possible. Although the deadline to place a reservation is March 31, 2009 , occasionally in past years the hotel has sold all the rooms set aside for the I.O.O.F. Pilgrimage at the reduced rate BEFORE the deadline. So, although a person may call to place a reservation before March 31, if there are no more rooms available AT THAT RATE , the person will be faced with a choice of reserving a room at a higher rate, if any are available, or seeking a room at another hotel . Problems with hotel reservations? Call Chuck Renninger at: 1-301-350-4495 or Jennie Sue Pearson at 1-301-662-0749.

Article No. 5

Fraternal Greetings, Brothers and Sisters!

Thank You for reading. Two questions to consider from my last article are:

5. What do you think would be a “crisis” for us that we need to confront in order to both promote our Order and to stem membership lasses? 6. How might we be able to deliver “services” that other organizations also provide in a different, unique and attractive manner that would give us a competitive edge?

Some would assume that if your organization has antiquated, disconnected, slow-moving processes – particu- larly those that drive any kind of success – it will be end up a loser I do believe that culture involves tra- ditional processes and is the game that we are always playing. Our organization is nothing more than the collective capacity of all of us to create value. Most groups say their cultures are about the same things – people, service, excellence, teamwork, responsible behavior, and integrity. As with national cultures, most of the really important rules are not written down anywhere and do not describe how in- teract with each another or what motivates us. What does our Odd Fellow culture encourage and dis- courage, reward and punish? Do we have a culture that rewards individual achievement or team play? Does Odd Fellowship value risk taking or consensus building? Obviously, we hope that our brothers and sisters are committed – committed to the Order and to what our Order does. We have obvious visi- ble, well-known – at least to ourselves – symbols – from the rituals that celebrate achievement – particu- larly in our degree work to even our songs that imbue patriotism and religion, to our dress code. Unfor- tunately, a cultural codification – called, for some, rigor mortis – sets in around values and behaviors and can be a problem often devastating for success. What I think hurts us the most is an inability to change a highly structured culture that had been born and flourished in a different world. Has our connection with our customers – namely, others in our community – become mostly administrative – like going through the motions in a marriage that has long since lost its passion? We cannot give simply a couple of speeches or write a new belief system for our Order and declare that a new culture has taken hold. What we can do is create the conditions for transformation. We can provide incentives. We must define our realities end goals. In fact in the end, leadership in or Order does not change but we must invite – in some tangible way – our members to change the culture. A deep cultural-change goal would be to in- duce Odd Fellows to believe in themselves again – to believe that they have the ability to determine their own fate and to re-emerge strong and vibrant. We need to be shaken out of our stupor, remind ourselves of who we are and to get ourselves to think and act collaboratively and fraternally, as curious self- starters. Do we have a general disinterest in our public arena, accompanied by a preoccupation with in- ternal politics? Is there, in our Order, a general permission to stop projects dead in their tracks? Is there an infrastructure that defends turf instead of promoting collaboration and an executive board that pre- sides rather than acts?

David Annett is a former delegate and a successful businessman. “I am grateful to the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs for giving me the unique opportunity in 1968 to attend the UN Pilgrimage. It was a time for making new friends, visiting major cities in Canada and the United States, as well as learning about the purpose and function of the United Nations. Over the past forty years the Pilgrimage has evolved, but the basic principle of expanding the educational horizons of young adults continues.”
