Following are the activities. 1. Chapter Executive Committee Meetings The Executive Committee Meeting of the IIM Chennai Chapter was held on 22 nd September 2011 in Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras. The main agenda of the meeting was to update on the activities carried in last 3 months, Activities for next 3 months, application for best chapter award, attending council meetings. The second EC meeting was held in Hotel Sabari Classic on 14 th December 2011. The agenda of this meeting was to discuss future tasks and have a discussion with Prof. Dr. -Ing. Horst Hahn, Distinguished Honorary Professor of IIT Madras. 2. Activities carried out in 2011-2012 With the help of its members, IIM Chennai Chapter carried out several activities successfully. These are listed below. Professor Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz - 2011 Preliminaries of Professor Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz - 2010 for +1 and +2 students of Science Stream was conducted at MME Department, IIT Madras on Saturday, 20 th August starting at 8.30 a.m. A total of 81 students from 22 schools in Chennai participated in the event. Two teams were selected to represent IIM Chennai Chapter in the National Level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz - 2011 held in Kalpakkam on 17th September 2011. A brief report of the event is enclosed in Annexure I. Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi escorted the student teams to Kalpakkam for the final quiz. Unfortunately the teams did not qualify the first round. Two day course on Heat Treatment of Industrial Components A two course on Heat Treatment of Industrial Components was organized Prof. M. Kamaraj and Dr. Page 1 of 15 Srinivasa Rao Bakshi on 29 th and 30 th July 2011, at IC&SR Auditorium, IIT Madras, Chennai. This course was a huge success with participation of more than 120 participants from industries, defence, aero-space research organizations, as well as CSIR laboratories and academia. A brief report on this course is provided in Annexure II. Two day course on Processing and Applications of Composite Materials A two-day course on Processing and Applications of Composite Materials was organized on 26 th and 27 th August 2011, at IC&SR Hall No.3, IIT Madras, Chennai. This was attended by more than 55 participants from industries, defence & aero-space research organizations and academia. This program was coordinated by Prof. M. Balasubramanian and Prof. M. Kamaraj of Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Eng. and Prof. R. Velmurugan of Dept. of Aerospace Eng., IIT Madras. A brief report on this course is presented in Annexure III. National Seminar on Tribology and Materials (NSTM-2011) A one day seminar was organized by Prof. N. Siva Prasad as Chairman and Prof. A. S. Sekhar as and Prof. M. Kamaraj as Secretary on 26 th Aug. 2012. This seminar was a tribute to Prof. K. Gopinath who retired in June 30th, 2011 and consisted of Invited presentations by speakers throughout India. Dr. Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture - 2011 IIM Kalpakkam Chapter and IIM Chennai Chapter organized Dr. Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture - 2011 on 5 th October, 2011 at the SRI Convention Centre, Anupuram. Dr. S. Srikanth , Director, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, delivered the talk entitled “Modelling the thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of multiphase multi-component alloys”. Arrangements were made for student members of IIM Chennai Chapter and Faculty to attend the talk. A brief report on the details is included in Annexure IV. IIM Council Meetings Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi attended IIM Council meeting held during NMD celebrations on 15 th November 2011 in Hyderabad. An all IIM chapters meet was organized in which Dr. Bakshi presented IIM Chennai Chapter Activities. It was very much appreciated by the IIM head quarters. Four day course on Computational Materials Thermodynamics: Hands-on Training with ThermoCalc A four day course was organized from 18 th to 21 st December 2011, at IC&SR Auditorium, IIT Madras, Chennai. This was coordinated by Dr. K. C. Hari Kumar and there was huge participation Page 2 of 15 from Industry and academia and this course was designed for a limited no. of people. There was a huge interest for registration, which could not be accommodated. The principles of CALPHAD and use of ThermoCalc software to generate thermodynamic information was discussed. This course was attended by IIT Faculty as well. A brief report on the workshop is included in Annexure V. AMIIM Examinations As part of the regular activities of the Chapter, AMIIM examinations were conducted in June and December 2011. Technical Lectures Eleven technical lectures were organized on various aspects of Metallurgy and related topics during the period 01.04.2011 to 31.03.2012. Prominent speakers from within India as well as Abroad were invited. Two of these lectures were ASM-IIM Invited Lecture . IIM also organized lectures in collaboration with ASM, IIF and MMS whenever in order to reach more audiences. The details of technical lectures organized are given in Annexure VI. 3. Membership Following table shows the membership status of IIM Chennai Chapter. Member type No. in 2010-2011 No. added in 2011-2012 Total Life Member 104 1 105 Associate Member 14 0 14 Ordinary Member 28 1 29 Student Member 70 20 90 Total 216 22 238 Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi Secretary IIM Chennai Chapter Page 3 of 15 Annexure I A REPORT ON MATERIALS QUIZ PROGRAMME Conducted by Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai Chapter & Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras Venue: Metallurgy Seminar Hall (MSB 104), IIT Madras Date: 20 th August 2011 Time: 8.30 AM – 2.00 PM We wish to inform you that we have conducted the preliminaries of the Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz - 2011 for class XI and XII students of Science Stream in our Department on Saturday, 20 th August starting at 8.30 a.m. A total of 81 students from 22 schools in Chennai participated in the event. Prof. M. Kamaraj, Chairman of IIM Chennai Chapter welcomed the participants and briefed them about the IIM Chennai Chapter and its activities. He also highlighted the contributions of Prof. Brahm Prakash and gave a brief introduction to the Main quiz conducted in IGCAR. Then, Prof. T.S. Prasanna Kumar, Head, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras inaugurated the quiz and talked about the importance of metallurgy and materials engineering to the school students and wished them for the quiz. Page 4 of 15 Based on their performance in a written test (for 30 minutes duration) six teams (12 students) were selected for the oral quiz. After the tea, the oral quiz was conducted. There were 5 rounds including two visual rounds. There were audience questions as well to involve them and prizes were given to them for answering correctly. It was an enjoyable and learning experience for all. The following two teams were selected to represent IIM Chennai Chapter in the National Level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz - 20011 to be held in Kalpakkam on 17 th September 2011. Participation certificates were also distributed. Dr. Bakshi proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by lunch and an informal feedback session. Page 5 of 15 Annexure II A REPORT ON TWO-DAY COURSE ON HEAT TREATMENT OF INDUSTRIAL COMPONENTS The Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai Chapter and Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engg.,IIT Madras, Chennai Jointly organized a two-day course on Heat Treatment of Industrial Components on 29 th and 30 th July 2011, at IC&SR Auditorium, IIT Madras, Chennai. This course was organized to cater to the needs of industrialists, academicians and researchers involved in the area of heat treatment. Prof. M. Kamaraj, Chairman, IIM Chennai chapter warmly welcomed the invitees, participants from industries and research organizations, and students from various engineering colleges in and around Chennai. He mentioned the course details and applications for various industries. Chief Guest Prof. T. S. Prasanna kumar, Head, Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Eng., IIT Madras, inaugurated the workshop. He emphasized the importance of heat treatment course, quality issues and safety aspect of the heat treatment. Dr. Page 6 of 15 Srinivasa Rao Bakshi, Secretary of IIM Chennai chapter and Assistant Professor, Dept of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras suggested all the participants to become IIM member and discussed the benefit of IIM Membership. The workshop had a two-day program comprising 16 invited lectures given by experts drawn from various organizations. The details of the speakers and topics were 1) Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi, IIT Madras on Fundamental concepts in steel heat treatment 2) Mr. S. M. Sharif, ARCI on Laser Surface hardening of steels 3) Dr. K. Venkateswaran, Advanced Heat Treatment Services on Carburising: Process and case studies 4) Mr.
