  • Analysis of Vulnerability Assessment in the Coastal Dakshina Kannada District, Mulki to Talapady Area, Karnataka S
ISSN (e): 2250 – 3005 || Vol, 04 || Issue, 5 || May – 2014 || International Journal of Computational Engineering Research (IJCER) Analysis of Vulnerability Assessment in the Coastal Dakshina Kannada District, Mulki to Talapady Area, Karnataka S. S. Honnanagoudar1, D. Venkat Reddy1and Mahesha. A2 1Department of Civil Engineering and 2Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Mangalore - 575025, Karnataka. ABSTRACT The areal extent of the study area is about 40 kms. The wells were located on the map using GPS values obtained after conducting GPS survey in the field. Environmental preservation of the coastal regions constitutes a socioeconomic element of major importance for both the present and the future. The term vulnerability refers to the potential degree of damage that can be expected depending on the characteristics of an element risk with respect to a certain hazard. Seawater intrusion is a global issue, by increasing demand for freshwater in coastal zones. Based on GALDIT Index, the aquifer vulnerability index mapping was carried out. The distributions of vulnerability areas are high, medium and low class are 7.5, 5 and 2.5 respectively. The main purpose of the study is to determine the vulnerability of the groundwater in the south western part of the Dakshina Kannada coast against seawater intrusion to the current sea level. The methodology used in the study consists of assessment of vulnerability to groundwater contamination using GALDIT method, identification of saltwater intruded area using indicators of saltwater intrusion like Cl/(HCO3+CO3) ratio and NA/Cl ratio etc. KEYWORDS: Coastal aquifer, GALDIT index, saltwater intrusion, vulnerability assessment, GIS, overlay.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK China's announcement that it would stop imports from several countries including India, starting June this year, is disappointing. The Indian seafood industry follows the highest quality and hygiene standards at all levels. China is our very important trade partner, and we hope that they realise and recognise the efforts we make, to ensure that the importing countries get our best products. Our list of importers includes many countries in the EU as well as the USA, who insist on the most stringent levels of inspection and quality specifications. The fact that we have consistently been on these countries' list of top exporters is proof of our quality credentials. Considering the fact that China was the largest market for Indian seafood exports last year, with 159,000 tonnes exported in 2011 (accounting for over 20 per cent of total seafood exports), this could be a severe setback. In value terms, exports to the Chinese market accounted for 15 per cent of the country's total export earnings. The Association is optimistic that the collective efforts of Indian exporters across various sectors, as well as the diplomatic initiatives at the government level would turn the situation around, bringing cheers to traders in both the countries. Seafood exporters are reeling under the impact of changes in procedure and documentation outlined by the various regulatory bodies and agencies, from time to time. Consequently, we are unable to compete with our Asian competitors like China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, resulting in our products being marginalised in certain markets.

Charter for Land Sovereignty* (Bhu Swaraj) 1. Land is the basis of our sustenance. It is a sacred trust for human sustenance and long-term survival. 2. Land is not a commodity, which can be bought and sold at will in a market driven by speculative finance, which allows corporate capital to dispossess small peasants of their land and become the new zamindars (landlords) 3. Land must belong to those who till it, tend it and nurse it and for whom it is a source of sustenance. And not to those for whom it is a means of accumulating wealth and speculative gain or object of luxury resort and idle pastime. 4. Ensuring Livelihood Security and Food Security must receive over-riding priority in determining land use pattern. Diversion and destruction of fertile agricultural land for industry, housing or entertainment of the affluent must be banned.
