Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.

Sounding rockets provided the first means to carry instruments to the outermost reaches of the Earth's atmosphere. They were, indeed, our first space vehicles. As Mr. Codiss relates in this history, in this day of satellites and deep space probes, sounding rockets remain as important to space science as ever, furnishing our most powerful means for obtaining vertical profiles of atmospheric properties. NASA continues to depend on sounding rockets for research in aeronomy, meteorology, ionospheric physics, exploratory astronomy, and other disciplines. Those of us who were privileged to take part in the early upper atmosphere rocket program, who recall with considerable nostalgia watching V-2s, Vikings, and Wac Corporals carry our instruments into the sky, are pleased to see some of the record of those pioneering days preserved.

The war began on July 28, lasting four years, three months and fourteen days. The fighting ended on Nov. It would take another six months before the war would officially end with a negotiated peace treaty five years after the assassination of the archduke. The war has been called several different names. In conversation and writing, it is referenced with several other names. During the four years of combat, 65 million soldiers fought in the battles. Eight million of the soldiers were killed worldwide. Another 21 million were injured and seven million were maimed with missing limbs. The United States only participating in the war for seven months, but had daunting statistics for casualties and injuries. During that seven-month period, , soldiers died and , were injured. The planes allowed explosives to be dropped to the ground. A machine gun could fire rounds a minute which was considered the equivalent firing of range of more than rifles. Then the face of naval warfare changed with the introduction of submarines. Suddenly ships carrying valuable cargos could be sunk by an enemy that could not be seen. With the limited resources available to him, his desired navy never materialized; instead he had to rely on a small number of batdeships, cruisers, and destroyers to fight against what was the largest and most powerful navy in the world, Great Britain's Royal Navy.

McKee Introduction With the outbreak of World War I, the submarine came into its own. For the Germans and British - and to a lesser extent the French, Austrians and Americans - the submarine became an important weapon for use against surface fleets. By the spring of 1917 German U-boats had brought the Allies to the brink of starvation. In World War II, U-boats again dominated until late 1943. In the Pacific, marauding US submarines gradually throttled Japanese movement, particularly on its inland seas. One of the main problems in coping with this weapon was the lack of a suitable counter. Normally the introduction of a new weapon quickly leads to the development of countermeasures. Yet while by 1914 John Holland's sea-going submarine had been in use for more than fourteen years, and the Whitehead motor-torpedo had been available since 1866, no preparations to attack this submersible warship had been proposed, let alone implemented. Indeed, that oft-quoted doyen of naval affairs, Fred T. Jane, asserted in 1902 that "the sea-going submarine is a pure myth."1 On the other hand, by 1908 Germany had realised that however great the battleship construction programme initiated by Admiral von Tirpitz and supported strongly by the Kaiser,2 it still could be blockaded easily because of its short coastline. The Germans thus seized on the U-boat as a possible answer to the threat posed by the Royal Navy. Its first submarine, U-l, was launched at Kiel on 30 August 1905.
