Academic-related bonuses vary widely Project: 2011 Date: 3/31/2011 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: USA Today (USA) Journalist: Jodi Upton City: McLean State: VA

When the men's Final Four coaches face off this weekend, more than bragging rights will be at stake. Collectively, the coaches stand to gain up to $1 million in tournament bonuses.

But less visible will be the bonuses the four can get for making sure the athletes meet academic goals, including graduation. Only Kentucky's has that kind of bonus: up to $100,000 if 75% of his players graduate. Calipari's academic bonus is among the highest in Division I men's basketball.

But dangling incentives to make sure a coach gets athletes through school is controversial. On the one hand, a significant bonus might keep a coach's focus on academics. On the other, should coaches be paid more for a fundamental part of their job?

At George Mason, which made the tournament this year and famously reached the 2006 Final Four, rewarding academic success emphasizes school values. When coach Jim Larranaga signed a new contract in 2006, his academic incentives included a team grade-point average of 3.0. In 2009, the school raised the bar to 3.3. Meeting that would earn Larranaga about $52,500.

"It had to be a real bonus," athletics director Thomas O'Connor says. "We realized our athletes overall were averaging a 3.0. So we had to raise it to make it more realistic. But (Larranaga) understands that. It was an easy conversation to have."

Of the 41 public schools in the 2011 tournament that provided USA TODAY a contract, 23 offer academic bonuses, from $3,000 for Utah State's Stew Morrill to $175,000 for Louisville's . On average, academic bonuses make up about 11% of a tournament coach's bonus package. It's similar for football coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools; about 13% of their bonus packages are for academics.

Louisville athletic department spokesman Kenny Klein says the size of an academic bonus might be a reflection of schools that have more resources. And more resources -- used properly -- can mean more tutors and academic staff to help players.

"Our grade-point average has been going up dramatically. ... It averages around 3.0," Klein says. "(But) some schools can't afford those things that help players progress."

In basketball, though, the issue is especially critical. One failing player on a basketball squad can upset the average much faster than a few players on a football team of 85 players or more. The NCAA sets a minimum academic progress rate (APR) for teams at 925, which equates to about a 50% graduation rate. Nearly one-third of Division I men's basketball teams fail to reach that benchmark, compared with about 21% of football teams, according to NCAA data.

Differences in APR rates tend to cluster along racial lines, with graduation rates for black athletes lower than for white athletes, often on the same team.

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics at the University of Central Florida found white male basketball players at tournament-bound schools graduate at a rate of 91% vs. 59% for black players on those teams.

There's enough disparity that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the NAACP have been pushing the NCAA to bar teams from the tournament if they don't meet the minimum academic standard, meaning they would lose their share of the about $80 million paid out to tournament teams. This year, that would have disqualified 10 men's teams, none of which made the Final Four.

But neither Duncan nor NAACP President Benjamin Jealous thinks an academic incentive is enough. While acknowledging people "follow the money," Duncan says only the extreme loss of tournament revenue will make schools pay attention.

"The question shouldn't be how much we pay him," Jealous says. "It's: 'Should we be paying him at all?' "
