Entry Fees: $275.00 per dog, listing fees for dogs not registered with the C.K.C. is $10.50 per day unless an ERN has been applied for. No dog will be allowed to compete unless fees have been paid.
LISTING FEE: A listing fee as established by the Canadian Kennel Club must accompany the entry of a dog for which a Canadian Kennel Club individual registration number or Event Registration Number (ERN) is not shown on the entry form. Event Registration Number: All dogs that are foreign born and foreign owned require an event registration number (ERN) to enable them to be awarded titles by the CKC. Dogs may be entered as “listed”; however, an ERN must be obtained within 30 days of obtaining points, awards or
1 scores to avoid cancellation. Application forms may be obtained from the Field Trial Secretary.
NON-MEMBER PARTICIPATION FEE: An annual fee for awards and titles will be charged to a Canadian nonmember of CKC. The fee will match the ERN fee. In order to protect the awards/titles earned, the non-member will have the option to become a CKC member or pay the non-member participation fee. Failure to comply within 30 days of notification will result in all awards and titles being cancelled. NOTE: it is less expensive to become a CKC member than to pay this fee each year.
6.5.1 Any dog withdrawn because of injury or illness, or for a dog that dies, or a bitch that comes into season shall be refunded in full by the event-giving club. Prior to paying such refund, the club may require an appropriate veterinary certificate.

For a close-up view of the event we suggest that you follow along behind the Marshall in the “Gallery”. If you choose to do so, please obey the instructions of the Field Trial Marshall at all times.
MARSHALL’S INSTRUCTIONS: Follow the Marshall’s instructions and keep close behind the Marshall and do not string out in a long line, or spread out overly far from the center line. If the gallery has advanced down the field, spectators must not travel down or across the field to catch up—rejoin at the start of the course.
Avoid loud talk, applauding or noise while the dogs are working, as it could disturb birds or dogs.
Children are welcome, but please keep them within the gallery at all times.
Noncompeting dogs must not be on the grounds (except in the parking area), and should be leashed when not kenneled.
Consumption of alcoholic beverages is not permitted on the field trial grounds. PLEASE NO SMOKING ANYWHERE ON THE GROUNDS.

Welcome to the 53rd Canadian Open National It is my privilege to welcome you to Alberta for the 2019 Canadian Open National Spaniel Championship. We look forward to this event every year as an opportunity to showcase our dog’s ability. The club has worked hard to ensure all the ingredients are included for a successful National- great judges, challenging cover, strong birds, a great bird planter, first-rate guns and warm hospitality. We trust the Thanksgiving weekend in October proves to be great weather, providing good scenting conditions. We would like to thank all our volunteers for lending a hand, a great field trial event doesn’t happen alone. A special thanks to Duck Unlimited for the use of their field. The Minburn Hutterites for the fantastic meals and everyone who traveled here to make this event possible. The best of luck to all the participants!

Growing up in Bismarck ND, I started hunting at the age of 10 with my hard headed Springer named Spencer. Out of necessity, I soon learned how to read subtle and not so subtle cues given by Spencer that there were birds in the vicinity. If I didnt react, and shoot the bird, spencer would be gone for hours. Since then I’ve had a love for the outdoors and a love for the dogs. I’m blessed enough to find myself in a position when I can enjoy both of these things every day. I started working for Tom Ness at the age 13. My wife and I own Absolute Gun Dogs, a training and boarding facility in Bismarck. Throughout my years I’ve found success as a family man, a business man, and a dog guy. Some of the accomplishments we are most proud of are the 2009 U.S. high point Springer with Millie, the 2010 North American high point Cocker with Emma (pictured here), won the 2016 U.S. Cocker National with Whinnie, and recieved the Hogan Award in 2015 with a great team of Springers. Judging the Canadian Open National is truly an honor and will add to my list of most memorable dog adventures.

I grew up in Sudbury and presently my family and I live on Manitoulin Island. I purchased my first English Springer Spaniel in 1989 looking for a hunting dog and I ended up with a lot more than I have ever imagined. A love for the breed, a passion for the sport and the many many friends I have made on both sides of the border. I joined the Sudbury Kennel Club to learn how to train my dog for hunting. I ran my first limit in 1991 and first Open All Age in 1996. With some talented dogs, hard work, luck and good coaches I managed to CFC 4 dogs. Having completed two nationals with 2 different dogs I understand the quality, performance and perfection needed to compete. I am honoured and humbled to be picked to judge the Canadian National! I never thought that purchasing my first spaniel would lead to a 30 year journey of training, competing and judging on both sides of the boarder. I thank all competitors for letting me judge your dogs and wish you all Good Luck!

PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. • Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. • Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. • Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. • The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors. • The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. • The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. • The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. • The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. • Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. • Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. • Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. • Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. • Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. • Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. • Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport.

12 Description of Open All-Age Sporting Spaniel Field Trials
Field Trials are designed to evaluate and compare performances of competing dogs. This consists of efficiently and effectively searching for and finding, then boldly flushing game which has been released (‘planted’) on the field trial course. The spaniel is expected to do this with desire, eagerness, style and stamina, all the while adjusting its pattern to suit wind conditions and to hunt and produce game within gun range. When game is flushed into the air, the dog must ‘hup’ (sit), ‘mark’ the fall of the bird, and retrieve only on command of the handler after the judge has given permission. The dog should retrieve briskly and deliv- er tenderly to hand. A spaniel must effectively demonstrate not only its natural abilities, but those qualities instilled by training (e.g. control, steadiness and responsiveness). The course is laid out to provide, as best as possible, each dog with similar cover and equal opportunity to display its hunting ability. Gunners are experienced and competent handlers of firearms, especially in a trial situation. They ‘represent’ the handler up to the time that the game is shot. If possible and unless di- rected by a judge to not shoot at a bird, gunners are supposed to kill cleanly and consistent- ly the game flushed by the spaniel, at a point most advantageous to a fair test of the dog’s ability, with due regard for the safety of dogs, handlers, judges, gallery, etc. A National Open All-Age field trial consists of five land series, and a ‘water test’. The first four land series are ‘braced’: two dogs, each performing under a separate judge, on ad- joining ‘beats’ divided by a line of flags. Each dog must find and flush (or sometimes trap) birds on its beat without interfering with the dog or birds on the other beat, and each must ‘honor’ the flushed and downed birds of the brace-mate (i.e. stay hupped until commanded to move by the handler, at a time approved by the judge), and must display control under all situations. In the first series dogs are brought up in rotation (the ‘running order’ is selected by lot prior to the trial) to appear under the ‘left’ or ‘right’ judge and, as each judge completes his assessment on a dog, another is brought ‘to the line’. Dogs successfully completing the first series are invited back to the second series on the opposite beat under the other judge. Dogs called back for the 3rd series are brought to the line in numerical order under whichever judge is available. If called back for the 4th series, the dog appears under the other judge. In the ‘water test’ (after the 4th series in a National), dogs must show an ability to swim and retrieve game from water. Dogs invited back for the final land series (i.e. 5th in a National) run singly and are assessed on individual performance by both judges. Spaniels completing all land series (and the ‘water test’) are rated in conference by the judges for overall performance, and placements from first through fourth are decided. Spe- cial ribbons (‘certificates of merit’, i.e. CMs) may be awarded if the judges feel competition for placements has been exceptionally close. Ribbons/rosettes are awarded as follows: 1st – blue; 2nd – red; 3rd – yellow; 4th – white; CM – dark green. In ‘regular’ licensed trials (Open All-Age stake; at least eight starters) championship points are: 1st – 5; 2nd – 3; 3rd – 2; 4th – 1. A Field Trial Championship re- quires at least 10 points, including at least one First and completion of a water test (the 10 points must be earned under at least two different sets of judges). Note that the National winner automatically receives 10 points, and is declared both a Canadian National Field Trial Champion (NFTCh) and a Canadian Field Trial Champion (FTCh). 13 Faults Which Can Disqualify a Dog:
1) Passed Bird: The dog does not locate a bird seen (by the judge, that is) to be on the dog’s course. 2) Break: The dog continues running (is not ‘steady’) after its bird is flushed (takes ‘wing’) and/or the dog isn’t steady to ‘shot’. 3) Fails to Honor: The dog continues hunting when the dog on the other beat flushes a bird (its handler’s whistle, the flying bird, and/or a shot at the other dog’s bird alerts a dog to honor) or the other dog is in the process of retrieving. (Note: on rare occasions a judge may permit a dog to continue on ‘hot pursuit’.) 4) Fails to Retrieve: The dog fails to retrieve the bird after being commanded to do so by its handler. 5) Out of Control: The dog does not respond to the handler’s commands or it interferes with the dog on the adjacent beat (this includes ‘poaching’, i.e., flushing or trapping a bird on the other dog’s beat). 6) Failed on a Runner: The dog appears to be tracking a running bird, usually for some distance, but does not produce the bird. This does not automatically lead to disqualification - - the judge has discretion. 7) Hard Mouth: The dog severely and without reasonable cause damages a bird. The judges must consult, and agree, before this call is made.
More About Judging: To provide further insight into what a judge may take into account when rating a sporting spaniel, given below is a synopsis of factors which may be considered when fill- ing out a ‘judging form’. Please note that this list is only an example, and that a given judge may assign somewhat different degrees of importance (e.g. ‘relative point value’) to individual factors and/or categories. Conditions: Terrain, weather, wind, ground cover, temperature, course direction (up, down or cross wind). Hunting Ability: Pattern, speed and style, aggressiveness, ‘nose’, flush, use of wind, runner. Control: Commands, steady, manners. Honor: Readiness to honor, steady. Retrieving: Marks fall, pick-up and carry, speed and style, delivery, mouth, cripple (runner), takes direction (‘blind’), distance of each retrieve noted. Water Series: Steady, marks fall, pick-up and carry, speed and style, delivery, mouth. Birds Handled: Retrieved, picked-up (‘trapped’), missed shot number in each category is recorded. Faults: Passed bird, broke, out of control, failed to retrieve, failed to honor, failed on a run- ner, hard mouth (each disqualifies the dog).

COMPETITORS – PLEASE NOTE In order to keep the National running as smoothly as possible, we ask that all Handlers be ‘on the line’ when it is your time to run (please be aware of the progress of each series so you know when you should head out to the field).
NOTES FOR THE GALLERY (SPECTATORS) & COMPETITORS: We hope you enjoy watching the National. A well-trained spaniel working with its handler makes full use of its natural ability as well as following whistle, hand signal and/or voice commands. Much can be learned about trialing and hunt- ing with spaniels by observation of the trial.
To avoid interfering with the dogs, handlers, judges or gunners, please observe the following requests: • Follow the marshal’s instructions and keep close behind the marshal. • Do not string out in a long line, or spread out overly far from the centre line. • If the gallery has advanced down the field, spectators must NOT travel down or across the field to catch up – rejoin at the start of the course. • Avoid loud talk, applauding or noise while the dogs are working, as it could disturb the birds or dogs. • Children are welcome, but please keep them within the gallery at all times. • Noncompeting dogs must not be in the grounds (except in the parking area where they must be leashed when not kenneled).
REQUIREMENT IN CANADA FOR WEARING OF BLAZE ORANGE EVERYONE who is out on the Trail Grounds MUST wear an article of blaze orange in colour and of “reasonable size” somewhere on their attire above waist level.
