VIEWS & REVIEWS Cosmology and Metanoia: A Buddhist Path to Process Thought for the West JAMES FREDERICKS IN RECENT MEMORY, much worthwhile literature has appeared regard ing the complexities of Alfred North Whitehead's relationship to Bud dhist metaphysics. Without doubt, process thought has served as a fruitful path for Western scholars in their efforts to gain a more refined appreciation of the cultural vision and religious insight of the East. Generally, this literature presumes that the strangeness of Buddhist thought to the West can be overcome, or at least lessened, by inter preting it with a process metaphysics. According to this interpretive strategy, in which the familiar is used to render the exotic more understandable, Whitehead's process metaphysics serves as a heuristic device for overcoming the alien character of Buddhist thought to the West. -

Leibniz’s Ontology of Force Julia Jorati INTRODUCTION It is remarkably difficult to describe any aspect of Gottfried Leibniz’s metaphysical system in a way that is completely uncontroversial. Interpreters disagree widely, even about the most basic Leibnizian doctrines. One reason for these disagreements is the fact that Leibniz characterizes central elements of his system in multiple different ways, often without telling us how to reconcile these different accounts. Leibniz’s descriptions of the most fundamental entities in his ontology are a case in point, and they will be the focus of this paper. Even if we look only at texts from the monadological or mature period—that is, the period starting in the mid-1690s—we find Leibniz portraying the inhabitants of the metaphysical ground floor in at least three different ways. In some places, he describes them as mind-like, immaterial substances that perceive and strive, or possess perceptions and appetitions—analogous in many ways to Cartesian souls. Elsewhere, he presents them as hylomorphic compounds, each consisting of primary matter and a substantial form. In yet other passages, he characterizes them in terms of primitive and derivative forces. Are these three accounts merely different ways of describing the same underlying reality? Since Leibniz sometimes uses all three descriptions in the same text,1 he appears to have thought so. But it is not obvious how exactly this is supposed to work. There is no consensus on how to reconcile Leibniz’s different descriptions of the most fundamental entities in his system. Perhaps the most straightforward suggestion is that the first description is the most accurate: simple substances or monads are mind-like, immaterial 1 See e.g. -

Stanfield 30.07.96 The Philosophy of Henri Bergson During the 1st Semester I have made a study of the philosophy of Henri Bergson and consider it to have been a major and perhaps the most important direct influence on the development of the Cubist aesthetic - as well as central to the development of early twentieth century Mod- ernism. It is my contention that it was on the back of Bergson’s philosophy that a set of philo- sophical ways of thinking with a fundamentally Platonic and Neoplatonic core were carried into at least a number of the leading art currents in the first two decades of the twentieth cen- tury - particularly that of Cubism - itself pivotal to Modernism. The connection between Cubism, Bergson and Platonism has been written about since the ear- ly development of Cubism, notably by those involved with that development. Yet despite the evidence, to my knowledge it has only been explored to some degree by R. Antliff. Antliff’s writing is exemplary of the confusion and hesitancy of scholarship on this subject. On the one hand he argued that Bergson played a seminal role in shaping the art and politics of the Fau- vist, Cubist and Futurist movements1, that the first attempts to align Cubist theory with that of Bergson began in about 19122 and that ‘no sustained comparative examination of Cubism’s precepts with those of Bergson has been undertaken thus far.’3 1 R. With empiricism, science was claimed to be a superior form of knowledge to philosophy, and natural philosophy was marginalized. This claim for science was challenged by defenders of natural philosophy, and this debate has continued up to the present. The vast majority of mainstream scientists are comfortable in the belief that through applying the scientific method, knowledge will continue to accumulate, and that claims to knowledge outside science apart from practical affairs should not be taken seriously. This is referred to as scientism. It is incumbent on those who defend natural philosophy against scientism not only to expose the illusions and incoherence of scientism, but to show that natural philosophers can make justifiable claims to advancing knowledge. By focusing on a recent characterization and defense of natural philosophy along with a reconstruction of the history of natural philosophy, showing the nature and role of Schelling’s conception of dialectical thinking, I will attempt to identify natural philosophy as a coherent tradition of thought and defend it as something different from science and as essential to it, and essential to the broader culture and to civilization. Simpson This dissertation examines the presence of Plato in the philosophical expressions of Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947). It was Whitehead who issued the well-known remark that “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists in a series of footnotes to Plato"1 -- the purpose of this project is to examine the manner in which Whitehead positioned himself as one such footnote, with respect to his thought itself, and its origins, presentation and reception. -

APPENDIX 1 Contemporary Process-Relational Thought: A Primer Te term “process-relational” has been most closely associated with the later metaphysical writings of Alfred North Whitehead, and Whitehead’s infuence on contemporary process-relational thought is undeniable. Te infuences of others, however, in- cluding Henri Bergson, C.S. Peirce, William James, and Gilles Deleuze, are also evident in current writing. All (though less frequently Deleuze) are sometimes included in the broader cat- egory of “process philosophers,” but this term alone does not ad- equately capture the centrality of relations in process-relational ontology. Similarly, the term “relationalism,” frequently under- stood to be opposed to various kinds of atomism, individualism, and “essentialism,” and more recently to object-oriented ontol- ogy, fails to adequately emphasize the processual nature of any and all relations. My use of the term “process-relational” is thus intended to highlight the temporal dynamism, emergent rela- tional systematicity, and inherently creative openness of a living universe composed of interactive events characterized by some measure of perception, responsiveness, subjectivity, or “mind.” Seen this way, process-relational philosophy overlaps in key respects with other classifcations, including “panpsychism” (see especially David Skrbina’s volumes on the topic), “new materi- alism” (a larger and more amorphous category, which says less 231 shadowing the anthropocene about what it is than how it is new), “constructive postmodern- ism” (a category -

Winkowitsch Washington, D.C. 2016 W. Norris Clarke’s Relational Metaphysics: Being and Person John J. Winkowitsch, Ph. D. Director: Gregory T. Doolan, Ph. D. William Norris Clarke firmly placed “person” at the core of his philosophy. He spent much of his career attempting to develop a Thomistic metaphysics that took into account phenomenological insights into the nature of person as relational. His life-long philosophical project was an attempt to articulate a Thomistically-inspired relational metaphysics that united the scholastic notion of person as substance with the phenomenological notion of person as relation. The final result of Clarke’s creative retrieval of Thomas Aquinas was, in his own words, the personalization of being itself from within Thomistic metaphysics, such that the ultimate meaning of existence is person-to-person gift and the ultimate key to the mystery of existence is interpersonal love. This dissertation traces the development of Clarke’s system of relational metaphysics and considers the extent to which the works of Thomas played a role in that development. The strictly chronological structure of the dissertation is divided into two parts and loosely organized around the main themes that Clarke himself identified as the primary pillars of his Thomistically-inspired relational metaphysics. The first part answers the question: What does it mean to be real? Clarke’s answer involves four principal themes.
